LetMeEatCake , to games in PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan stepping down in March

Curious why everyone in the comments (as of my own comment) is happy about this?

Sure, he exudes C-suite personality and doesn’t act like he’s a gamer. But that doesn’t matter. He oversaw Sony’s rise to dominance in the console market. That dominance is built on the foundation of their first party AAA games — which is a less than ten year old change for them. Sony porting their big games to PC was a project that was fully embraced under his leadership.

Point being, as a gamer it seems like he’s done a fairly decent job. I don’t care how boring his interviews or speeches are or that he looks and acts like he belongs in a board room — they’re all like that anyway even if their public persona says otherwise. I care about games and treatment of consumers.

helloharu ,
@helloharu@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t get it either. PlayStation have release some amazing first party games, and equally great consoles over his tenure that have captured my imagination and passion many times over. These are the things that matter, not some idealised or stereotypical c-suite gamer persona. He’s done great things with PlayStation and deserves the credit for that.

Zehzin ,
@Zehzin@lemmy.world avatar

I’d hardly pin their rise on him, in 2019 when he took over it was already pretty clear they were on top in the high end console front. If anyone should take credit it’s Don Mattrick lmao

Madison_rogue , (edited ) to technology in Update: Unity office death threat was made by a Unity employee
@Madison_rogue@kbin.social avatar

Not even an anonymous threat, which could have been implied by the initial reporting. Riccitiello used this opportunity to cancel a town hall event where he could be confronted with these controversial changes by overblowing the actual threat to his company and his employees. Wow, coming from this sleazebag I'm not surprised.

EDIT

So now, anytime a CEO or representative uses death threats and/or retaliation against employees as an excuse to interrupt company functions it could be considered entirely suspect. He's not the first to do it recently (fuck you u/Spez), but this doesn't help respond against actual credible threats to people from disgruntled users.

All of those protesters that went to Reddit for the last week to engage, generate ad revenue, and ultimately benefit Reddit, really showed them. Idiots.

Artinizal ,

Yes because if I’m an investor I see an uptick in engagement and don’t ask a single question about it. I invest blindly based solely on numbers not on news articles blatantly posting issues with the CEO. I DEFINITELY want to invest in a company that. A.) Has a CEO who is mired in controversy B.) Has communities dedicated to taking engagement away. C.) Has an uptick in use once a year for this event, which is undermining the companies ability for engagement longterm.

CheshireSnake , (edited )
@CheshireSnake@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

People who say stuff like what the person you’re answering said are just being naive. To them, protest = boycott. Personally, i dislike retreating with tails between my legs (but I’m not going to try to convince people to do anything either way). They also seem to believe there are so many protestors that any action we do affects reddit so much. It’s hilarious. They left reddit but retained reddit’s black and white mentality.

kaitco ,

People still invest in Tesla even though Musk is at helm.

Personally, I didn’t engage because I felt to “nothing” them during their big event was more worthwhile and also contributed to lessening my overall Reddit visits. Ultimately, however, numbers are what speak to investors.

“The Xbox system software is the operating system developed exclusively for Microsoft’s Xbox home video game consoles.[1] Across the four generations of Xbox consoles, the software has been based on a version of Microsoft Windows”

"Though initial iterations of the software for the original Xbox and Xbox 360 were based on heavily modified versions of Windows, the newer consoles feature operating systems that are highly compatible with Microsoft’s desktop operating systems, allowing for shared applications and ease-of-development between personal computers and the Xbox line. I'm pretty sure the shared applications it's referring to there are UWP apps, which use a different set of APIs to traditional Win32 apps that are only available on full Windows versions. I looked into how Edge works a bit more, and it sounds like Microsoft made a special translation layer to take Edge's Win32 API calls and turn them into UWP ones. I guess games would be possible to run like this too?

Stamets , (edited ) to startrek in Star Trek: Infinite could be the grand strategy game Trekkies need
@Stamets@startrek.website avatar

I’m a big Stellaris fan (not that I’m good at it) so having a Trek flavored version is going to be perfect. It also does really make sense to have it set in the Star Trek universe to begin with. There are so many prebuilt situations that you can revisit through a new lens. Do a bunch of ‘What If’ scenarios. It’s going to be wonderful.

We barely get any Trek games lately and it’s exhausting. Most of them are mobile games which can be fun but don’t require much planning or strategy. It definitely already looks like the grand strategy game that I need.

Edit: Well, you guys are going to get it at least.

ValueSubtracted OP ,
@ValueSubtracted@startrek.website avatar

It’s actually been a pretty good year for non-mobile Star Trek games, between this, Resurgence, and the Prodigy game, all while STO lumbers on.

Stamets ,
@Stamets@startrek.website avatar

I had forgotten Resurgence even existed. It was out of my price range at release, especially given the lackluster visuals. The Prodigy game I’ve been meaning to play but I haven’t even seen Prodigy yet. Now that Paramount seems hell bent on erasing it from existence I’m not sure I should get it into it.

SaltySalamander ,
@SaltySalamander@kbin.social avatar

You already have a Trek flavored version of Stellaris. It's called New Horizons and it's been around for nearly as long as Stellaris itself has.

Stamets ,
@Stamets@startrek.website avatar

I don’t play on PC so the mod is completely unavailable to me. So no, I don’t have a Trek flavored version of Stellaris.

And I just learned that the information I was previously given about Infinite coming to consoles was completely incorrect. It’s a Paradox game so there’s a chance but otherwise I can throw out my streamers and excitement I guess. Well I hope everyone else enjoys it at least.

GhostOfElectricity ,
@GhostOfElectricity@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz avatar

How will you play Infinite? As far as I can tell it’s only on Steam.

Stamets ,
@Stamets@startrek.website avatar

Simple answer, I won’t and I’m actually upset by that.

I updated my comment to address a few minutes ago but it must have been after you opened the comments.

I had been excited and waiting for this game for months because the person who I heard the announcement from had also said it was going to be for consoles. I didn’t think to verify that because he had never made a mistake like that before. Gaming on PC is also not an option. I’ve been using the same laptop for 5 years and it was already outdated when I got it.

GhostOfElectricity ,
@GhostOfElectricity@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz avatar

Ah, my bad. Hopefully it’s successful enough to get a console port.

Stamets ,
@Stamets@startrek.website avatar

Here’s hoping. Paradox does tend to do console ports for most of their games so there’s a decent chance.

Kaldo ,
@Kaldo@kbin.social avatar

Tbf mods always feel like they are just hacking and jury-rigging existing mechanics to fit a new theme (which they, well, are). If we can get proper support for ST-specific things like the neutral zone, warp drive-based maps rather than hyperlanes, larger focus on exploration or random anomalies, it could be interesting. It wont replace stellaris for me but it I can see ST fans preferring it over a (possibly janky) mod implementation... but this is all assuming the official conversion is not just as janky and limited by the old engine ofc.
