I wrote in “Gaza” on the primary, but come november I am 100% sure that I’m gonna be voting D as hard as I can because my partner is trans and I’d rather not be driven from the country by transphobia, thanks.

Criticising the democrats for when they’re not good is absolutely valid, but at the same time, get out and vote for them and mobilize as many voters for them as you can, because the difference in outcome between the two parties with legitimate chances of winning is too great to throw away your votes protesting the lesser of two evils. By all means, keep protesting (In other ways, besides the ballot box), but also do your part to make sure that we get the lesser of two evils, not the greater.

Cowbee ,
@Cowbee@lemmy.ml avatar

Violence against trans individuals has increased under Biden. That isn’t because Biden is “tougher on trans issues,” it’s because the DNC is doing absolutely nothing to prevent the root cause of fascism from rising, which is decaying Capitalism.

Vote for whoever you want, but if you want to protect your partner, you’ll likely get best results by living in a blue area of a blue state, regardless of who is in the federal office.

Fades ,

Capitalism is an enabler not a cause of fascism, there’s a difference

Cowbee , (edited )
@Cowbee@lemmy.ml avatar

What do you believe to be the cause of fascism, the declining material conditions of Capitalism, or the spread of dangerous ideas?

In my opinion, the latter is only possible if the former is already true. Historically, fascism has been an attempt by the Bourgeoisie and Petite Bourgeoisie to ally and “turn the clock back” to the “good old days.” It’s why we see so many small business owners riding the Tesla Train, and why Musk has been supporting fascists on X like EndWokeness and LibsOfTikTok. This extreme nationalism and hardcore embrace of “tradition” is economic in cause.

Capitalism leads to fascism or Socialism, whoever wins the struggle as it dies. It’s up to Leftists to struggle against fascism at every step so that we can progress forwards, not regress.

Mk23simp ,

We’re absolutely planning to live in a blue state. But the ability to be safe even in blue states is in question if Trump gets elected again. If he does, then we’re probably gonna try to get out of the country as quickly as possible rather than waiting around to find out.

Cowbee ,
@Cowbee@lemmy.ml avatar

Generally Blue states have managed to keep things like Abortion Protections and whatnot in place, as well as other progressive social protections, and even in the face of a possible federal crackdown, the people in blue areas of blue states aren’t suddenly going to have a switch in their brain turn red, you and your partner should be safe. I encourage you to do what you believe is best for you and your partner, my point was to drive home that the DNC likely will not be able to protect your partner if you live in a red state, or a red area of a blue state. If your plan was to hope Kamala gets elected and institutes federal protections of transgender people in Red States, then I hope you reconsidered your plan.

Mk23simp , (edited )

We don’t live in those “generally” times, currently. One of our candidates is running on a fascist platform, tried to do a fascist coup (and got away with no consequences for it), and has both promised and planned to overthrow democracy if he’s elected.

Maybe he would be prevented from doing all that stuff even if he won, but I’m definitely not counting on that. I’m gonna be fleeing like a jew from Nazi Germany because quite frankly that’s what I see it potentially becoming, and they’ve definitely painted a target on the backs of trans people in particular.

I am under no illusions that the democrats will be fully on our side, but when the other side is specifically trying to wipe out people like my partner, they’re a very clear choice. I’d much rather live under a government that’s not actively trying to wipe us out.

Cowbee ,

Then why do you think Kamala winning would stop the movement towards fascism? If the fascists don’t care about democracy, do you expect them to just sit there if they lose electorally?

Maybe he would be prevented from doing all that stuff even if he won, but I’m definitely not counting on that. I’m gonna be fleeing like a jew from Nazi Germany because quite frankly that’s what I see it potentially becoming, and they’ve definitely painted a target on the backs of trans people in particular.

Do what you need to do to keep yourself and your partner safe, but don’t depend on dems winning the federal election to protect.

Mk23simp ,

If the democrats lose the election, I fully expect them to roll over and let Trump take power. In that case, Trump would have the institutions on his side, even as he seeks to dismantle those same institutions going forward. Democrats constantly show themselves to be willing to play by the rules, even as Republicans show themselves to be willing to bend those rules.

If he loses the election, I expect there will be an attempt to take power anyways (again), but I think that attempt is likely to fail (again) when he doesn’t have the institutions on his side.

The degree of difference between the two potential outcomes is quite pronounced. You can say “Both sides bad” and you’d be right, but bad vs good is not a binary, it’s a spectrum, and there’s a huge degree of difference in how bad the two sides are.

Cowbee ,
@Cowbee@lemmy.ml avatar

This is the bit that I don’t quite agree with. If the fascists are powerful enough to assert absolute power if they win, then they are also powerful enough to overturn the results if they lose. This is what has historically happened with fascism, you can’t get it to leave by playing nice. Either they are strong enough to overturn the election anyways, or they aren’t strong enough to overpower blue states in a GOP federal win.

ignotum ,

Hitler gained power “legally” and then made changes to secure and increase it until he was a dictator

Mussolini was democratically elected, then secured and increased his power until he was a dictator

Trump will try to get elected, then try to secure and increase his power until he is a dictator

Most institutions follow the laws, so a person trying to seize power by force will have to fight much harder that someone that gains power through normal means, and then manipulates said institutions from the inside

Cowbee ,

Hitler lost the 1932 Election, the liberals sided with the fascists and conceded power. It was “above board,” but could only happen because of the embedded influence of the Nazi Party.

Abusive, yes, but as far as I’m aware not violent. Still fits (calling 911 as per the post), but not for physical abuse.

He has been known to publicly harass and threaten (it’s why he was barred from the Grammy awards), he’s been sued by employees for harassment, intimidation, retaliation, and discrimination, and even failure to pay his employees, and he’s also being sued by his former personal* assistant for sexual harassment, including him masturbating in front of her.

Syncthing is amazing though.

renzev OP ,

It’s pretty good. Definitely better then self-hosted stuff like nextcloud, because you don’t need to maintain your own server. But sometimes it takes a while for two hosts to discover each other on the same local area network.

untorquer ,

I’ve never noticed any delay after first discovery. But i only use 3 devices so 🤷

Ghoelian ,

I think they’re both good for different use-cases. I use nextcloud myself on a truenas system. I sync things like my pictures to nextcloud, and delete them from my phone after I’ve sorted them into the correct folders.

This way my data isn’t clogging up my phone and other things, is still available from anywhere (as long as my home internet doesn’t go down), and it’s still safely stored on redundant storage.

This does take a bit more setting up than something like syncthing, though it wasn’t very difficult at all. Basically install the docker image, tell it where my data goes, and set up a new dns record if you want it publicly accessible. I personally run it through a zerotier network so I don’t have to do that.

GFGJewbacca ,

I like Nextcloud on my TrueNAS scale setup, but for photos I’ve started using Immich. It works extremely well, and does automatic backups of specific folders from your phone. The interface looks nice too.

Ghoelian ,

I’m actually using Photoprism on the same truenas system to view my photos, I just already had nextcloud for the rest of my files, so I’m using that to upload. They point to the same datasets, so they share the image data. I believe photoprism is pretty similar to immich, but i haven’t used immich myself.

Fun fact: From time to time, a pilot forgets to change frequency when entering a new area. This means the plane looks like it is not communicating. This is the most common reason why jets are sent to intercept an airliner. Of course, I would pay to see a recording of the pilots as they see the jet in front of them and realize they messed up.

Wilzax ,

Why would they send jets before trying different frequencies?

Seems like a waste of resources and too rapid of an escalation imo

DreamlandLividity , (edited )

I think switching to a frequency that a different region uses could be dangerous, since then the airplanes near do border would receive the signal but the airport wouldn’t. This could lead to misscommunications.

Also, the airline pays for the jets.

PS: source is youtu.be/9qM-xN7Bgg8

PPS: They do try the emergency frequency, routing a message through the previous area controller as well as anything else they can think of first. I left it out for brevity. Of course, fighter jets are not the first choice.

1 - Reputation. If a taxi driver was a racist POS, literally nothing I can do.

2 - Agreed upon fare. You literally see a estimate of the cost. I had a taxi add extra fees the moment I sat in the car.

3 - GPS. The route on your phone is the same route they follow. How many times have taxis went on a fucking joyride to rank up more money?

4 - See when the ride is coming. “Cab will be there in 15-45 mins.” Never fucking shows up.

5 - Automatic payment. How many fucking CC machines didn’t work so they forced you to pay cash?

I can go on and on.

But to say some tech bro slapped some tech jargon onto taxis and became rich is disingenuous to all the innovations they’ve done to unfuck the taxi industry.

An example. Here they painstakingly remove JQuery (most modern frameworks are way too big) from the site and shave 32Kb off the site size.

lolcatnip ,

At a certain point it makes more sense to subsidize better low-end hardware than to make every web site usable on a 20 year old flip phone. I’d argue that if saving 32 kB is considered a big win, you’re well past that point. Get that homeless guy a £50 phone and quit wasting the time of a bunch of engineers who make more than that in an hour.

uis ,

Get that homeless guy a home.

Also, if you are in a basement/mountains/middle of Siberia, waiting for 32 kB takes quite some time.

lolcatnip ,

I’m all for ending homelessness, but that’s really a different problem than we were discussing. I’m pretty confident jQuery isn’t stopping anyone from being housed.

Anyway, there’s no way you’re gonna convince me 32 kB is a lot of data. It’s just not. Even the slowest 3G connections can download that much in half a second. Just the text of this thread is probably more than 32 kB. If you can’t download that much data, you only technically have Internet service at all.

uis ,

Even the slowest 3G connections can download that much in half a second.

Even 3G is not always avaliable, even 3G sometimes slower than 2G.

32 KB here, 32 KB there and boom - you have bitbucket.

lolcatnip ,

At least in the US, the reason 3G isn’t available is that it has been phased out, as has 2G. You may as well complain about how slow it is to send data with smoke signals, because 4G is table stakes for an internet-capable device now.

uis , (edited )

US? US is wild place. A lot of people still on ADSL, but 2G and 3G equipment is thrown away and say “lol, you problem, buy new phone”. I won’t be surprised that there are a lot of places where internet is less stable than in a train going through tunnel under the mountain in the middle of Siberia. Which means no internet.

I wonder what happens to internet connection in rural areas of USSA, since you suddenly started talking about it.

In Europe(or at least in my part of Europe) there are places where mobile internet is overloaded like subway system and city center and places where mobile internet is very unstable like my house in suburban area and, agan, trains.

And, as I mentioned, bitbucket. It struggles to load even on average PC.

bluewing ,

Where I live even 4G isn’t all that reliable. Making a phone call is mostly impossible and a text message is hit or miss unless I’m in a town or along a major road, This is due to terrain and the general lack of towers. 4G is spotty at best and with many areas having no service at all. And I ain’t never going to live long enough to ever see 5G out here.

But, I would agree that while 32KB is pretty minor for an internet connection, things have a way of stacking. 32KB here, another extra 32KB there and pretty soon things can get ‘heavy’ to use.

uis ,

Also, engieneers already had tech debt of updating to new jQuery version, which can result in a lot of wierd bugs, so it was achiveing two goals at once.

And probably 50£ phone IS their target device.
