linearchaos , to til in TIL about this tool, the *Reinigungsschaber* !
@linearchaos@lemmy.world avatar

This is the absolute proper tool for this job.

That said, everyone should know the different ways of cleaning the things.

Bar keepers Friend, for the equivalent oxalic acid/ddbsa cleaner in your area will remove dark carbon from most surfaces, especially when used with a magic eraser/melamine sponge

If you have a pot or a pan or something movable that is very burnt on, soaking it in an extremely dangerous solution of potassium hydroxide (lye) well absolutely remove all the organics. You just have to be sure to wear gloves and splash protection because it will blind you in a hot second.

Soaking rusty items in vinegar for a prolonged period of time will remove the rust, but you’ll have to treat it pretty quickly to keep the rusr from coming back.

pete_the_cat ,

I used vinegar to get the rust off of a bunch of (Pogs) Slammers that had gotten wet in my parents basement. It worked reasonably well on most of them.

linearchaos ,
@linearchaos@lemmy.world avatar

If we’re not talking about food safe applications crc evaporust is absolutely magical. But it will leave the surface dark which you then would need to buff back off.

KnightontheSun ,

Let us reiterate that for the folks in the back: do not use evaporust on anything you consume food from.

piecat ,

Honest question, why?

The material safety data sheet really doesn’t indicate toxicity. It’s not a carcinogen or mutagen (even in California)

The marketing material on their website shows a cast iron pan

KnightontheSun ,

Okay, I will admit I might be wrong on that. The ingredients are proprietary, so I guess we have to trust their docs and the MSDS here.

pete_the_cat ,

If California thinks it’s safe, it must be safe, they claim everything causes cancer 🤣

funkless_eck ,

thank you based pogchamp

detalferous ,

Treat it with what? An oil to protect the surface?

linearchaos ,
@linearchaos@lemmy.world avatar

A super thin layer of food safe oil. Apply it, Buff it back off as much as possible than wash the pan.

If it’s cast iron you can just re-season it.

ubermeisters ,
@ubermeisters@lemmy.world avatar

I’m not convinced about your instructions. Applying a thin layer of oil then buffing it then washing it back off? That doesn’t make any sense. Modern dish soaps are very good at cleaning thin oil films. Why oil it then wash the oil off? Idk like I said.

linearchaos ,
@linearchaos@lemmy.world avatar

The amount of oil on the surface that you need to stop rust is on the molecular level.

Do it, don’t do it, whatever suits you, That’s what I do and it works for me.

ubermeisters ,
@ubermeisters@lemmy.world avatar

… yeah surfactants are molecules too… I’m thinking I’ll not, as someone with a proper material science education. No shade, just, you’re definitely not correct, or maybe your house uses bacon grease as dish soap.

modifier ,

house uses bacon grease as dish soap.

I’m no materials scientist, just some guy on the internet who wants to make sure there isn’t a revolutionary idea missed in they throwaway comment.

ubermeisters ,
@ubermeisters@lemmy.world avatar

People have historically used bacon grease to make soap, with lye. It’s also commonly used to seal pans against moisture, without washing them after. Also is a decent chrome polish.

Guest_User ,

You sound fun lol

Maeve ,

just re-season it.

One does not “simply re-season.” Tbf it’s a pita.

JungleJim ,

Is it? I just throw it in the oven on high for a bit. Sometimes if I’m lazy I’ll just oil it and cook on high without seasoning. Just using it seasons it some. Even if the season is incomplete, just being oiled will prevent rust until next time and that seasoning builds up. Some people make a hobby of doing things the “right way” though, who am I to judge?

Maeve ,

Idk, I gave away an almost new set of cast iron, but for the Dutch over and skillet. Skillet was preseasoned, used Dutch oven for deep frying/stews/casseroles,, so it happened quickly enough. The rest of it wasn’t worth it since it’s heavy enough to be more hindrance and time than I actively used regularly.

Tl;dr mostly was for me

JungleJim ,

Fair enough! I wish I’d been there, free cast iron is the best cast iron.

Maeve ,

Heck yeah! If I’d bought the set from a store or online, instead of a yard/estate sale, it would have been several hundred, minimum.

model_tar_gz ,

My most used, first and second favorite cast iron skillets are a no-brand $5 rusty garage sale find. A strip and reseason and these things are the best.

My third favorite is the $50 Lodge we got as a wedding gift.

LemmyIsFantastic ,

No it’s not. 5 minutes of active work and 5 hours in the oven.

NewNewAccount ,

nxdefiant ,

AND it reacts with aluminum to create hydrogen!

linearchaos ,
@linearchaos@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah that actually is another good point to it if you use it on aluminum it will erode the surface. If my quarter sheet pans get out of control I’ll do it to them a couple of times and sand them back down before I recycle them.

TonyTonyChopper ,
@TonyTonyChopper@mander.xyz avatar

yes, don’t fuck around with corrosive chemicals. Strong acids or bases will destroy tissues with ease, especially if they’re not protected by skin (which also gets dissolved but more slowly)

SuzyQ ,

Bar keepers Friend, for the equivalent oxalic acid/ddbsa cleaner in your area will remove dark carbon from most surfaces, especially when used with a magic eraser/melamine sponge

I had no idea! Thank you! I keep this to clean my ceramic cast iron sink but had no idea that I could use this on my glass top stove and the burnt bottom of my pans!

LillyPip , (edited )

Barkeeper’s Friend is a miracle, but people should know it’s incredibly abrasive and can debride enamelware. I ruined a pan’s outer finish because that didn’t occur to me, using it to get carbonisation off the bottom.

It’s brilliant for raw metal and glass cooktops, though. When I bought my house, the previous owners left a kit for the glass cooktop including the razor tool in your OP. I’m so grateful they did because I wouldn’t have known.

Doctor said that as it turns out, he was doing vegan wrong and he needed to eat meat ASAP to fix the damage to his metabolism. Then, afterwards, if he still wanted to be vegan he would have to supplement way more protein than he was doing before. The contrasting absurdity always cracked me up when they tried to make it as if being vegan gives them superpowers.

Kodemystic ,
@Kodemystic@lemmy.kodemystic.dev avatar

People should be able to choose if they want to see ads or not. When I need a product and start product hunting than that’s the perfect time to open yourself for “suggesting a thing” as you call it. Now if I am just browsing a page like reddit or whatever and see an ad that I really don’t want to see, don’t need etc etc. THAT is brainwashing because it stays unconsciouslly on your mind if you see it enough times which increases the chances that you’ll act on it, buy, think about it. This is basic stuff.

Many many years from now IF humanity has not wiped out itself and actually evoved, this statement:

Probably COVID, so I’d add 2 years to each of these dates for possible releases if a project hasn’t been cancelled.

I’d love an Oblivion remaster next year. Although I have a sneaking suspicion the Skyblivion project might end up being the more polished experience.

Annoyed_Crabby ,

From looking at skyrim remaster, oblivion/fo3 just gonna be texture update and some lighting/shader change, that’s it.

XTornado ,

Well I would expect some patches at least for fallout 3 as that was more broken with current PCs but who knows.

Fades ,

And the textures won’t even be that much better, current mods will outperform visually no question. Just a fucking cashgrab

Annoyed_Crabby ,

100% sure they will use uncompressed og texture.

99.999999% they gonna get external dev to remaster it so the art direction will be incoherent and jarring, 0.000001% they get modder that does all the cool texture/shader mod onto the team.

Cethin ,

It could be. It doesn’t say what studio is working on it. If it’s BSG then yeah. If it’s contracted out to another studio then I wouldn’t be surprised to see a version with the newer rendering tech and things like that.

MxM111 ,

Why would Covid delay game by that much after Covid?

Puzzle_Sluts_4Ever ,

Part of it is because games have multi-year development cycles. And, for most of covid, WFH/remote was not something people really understood how to do (having kids around did not help). So basically all games lost 1-2 years of development time.

And for a major studio (like MS), you have limited support teams and resources. So if Ghostwire needed one of the support studios, DOOM Year Zero (!?!?!?!) would have to wait and so forth.

And then you just have release windows. It matters less in a digital distribution world, but you want your big games to hit for holidays and known good selling weeks. So if Starfield is end of Summer, DOOM can’t be.

And as you add on delays you need to improve the game because something else came out with a similar bit and you will come across as “derivative”.

Potatos_are_not_friends ,

Most companies froze during the start of COVID. During the first few months, we didn’t know if COVID was spread through air or by blinking. Companies scrambled for WFH, trying to keep workers alive while other companies scrambled to create 6-ft distances. People died. Less people went out to buy things.

This went on for a full year at minimum.

MxM111 ,

You would think that software companies could switch really easy.

Viking_Hippie ,

You would think so, but for an industry where almost all of the work is location-agnostic, they sure love forcing people to work in offices and cubicles.

Cethin ,

I think it’s part Covid but also part that they just underestimated how much time they needed. Clearly it still could have baked a little longer. It feels like it was only fully playable at the very end because so much QoL stuff needs to be added, in my opinion. I think it would have been smart to at least have the mod tools ready at launch, or at least weeks later. It looks like it’s going to be months for those though.

Stovetop ,

Well we all knew that much at least. It was originally announced to be released in 2022 but they pushed it back almost a full year to 2023. Guessing when development slowed due to salvage work needed for Fallout 76 and then likely a mandate from Microsoft to polish it more before release.

ithas ,
@ithas@artemis.camp avatar

It also says FY which I assume means Fiscal Year. It seems like Microsoft's fiscal years end in June and start in July based on browsing a few investor pages (like this one saying fourth quarter ended in June). Not that that completely solves for the time difference but wanted to mention it

Welcome to the corporately controlled internet where marketing firms, public relations agencies and communications firms constantly try to manipulate the public discourse.

If you use filters … you can actually hear and read what people want to talk about.

TommySalami ,

Well, you can definitely narrow it down to what you want to read and talk about. I’m interested in doing that with politics (US), and I’m very far away from any kind of PR or marketing person. People can genuinely want to talk politics, it’s not always a corporate conspiracy.

ininewcrow ,
@ininewcrow@lemmy.ca avatar

The best kind of marketing is the type you are completely unaware of.

The world runs on money … money is made by convincing people to give it to you … our modern world is built on convincing people … but people don’t like being convinced … so you have to convince them without letting them know they’ve been convinced.

It’s not a corporate conspiracy … it’s just business.
