Not that they were a great company to begin with, but nice one Mike Ashley, killed off another brand basically

9point6 ,

Bet there’s some stellar ales around there

9point6 ,

Everyone keeps telling me “you’ll understand when you’ve got one”

I’m thinking that’s a pretty irresponsible gamble

9point6 ,

This article is actually wild—did they even list a single one of the products being recalled in the actual article?

I see links and the conglomerate company name, but zero of the actual products without clicking through to a PDF or something

9point6 , (edited )

Haha okay

Edit: after a skim and a quick Google, this basically looks like a packaging up of existing modern processor features (sorta AVX/SVE with a load of speculative execution thrown on top)

9point6 ,

I wish there was a Google translate for memes

Got no idea what’s going on here

9point6 ,

…I feel like openssh has a much larger attack surface than a simple binary.

If you’re going to this extent already, you may as well jump on the run0 approach systemd is introducing.

oh no, I can hear rumbling

9point6 ,

Hoping the EU drops GDPR 2 requiring them to delete the entire model if it infringes or something.

Expecting the US to meaningfully regulate US companies is like expecting…

You know what, even including physical impossibilities, I’m struggling to think of anything less likely

Shower thoughts are wasting water.

My city is in the middle of the worst drought in recorded history. My showers are typically under 2 minutes and I have to shower with a bucket to catch otherwise wasted water to use to flush the toilet. I also shut the water down when I am wet enough so I can scrub myself without having unneeded water flowing then start it back...

9point6 ,

Well I live in a rainy part of the UK, and we basically had rain all month, so longer showers are probably more likely helping avoid the reservoir flooding over here

I guess the one upside to this situation is our water isn’t even metered, we just pay a flat rate every quarter

9point6 ,

Nah that’s in the Netherlands

9point6 ,

Okay, fine, rainier part

9point6 ,

Why stop there, biodegradable everything is better, unless you explicitly need it to not biodegrade

9point6 ,

Yeah, completely agree

In the interest of being terse, I was letting “unless you explicitly need it not to biodegrade” do a lot of the heavy lifting for those particular cases.

9point6 ,

I’ve got a set of metal ones that are pretty good!

9point6 ,

That’s also without going into how shaming someone can easily send them into a spiral where it’s even harder for them to motivate themselves to improve (this isn’t just regarding fat people, but rather shaming anyone for something that requires lifestyle changes to remedy)

Happy people tend to make less self-destructive life choices

9point6 ,

I wonder how Reddit investors are feeling when they find out even Google couldn’t pull something valuable out of the Reddit data

9point6 ,

Tbh at least this one makes sense, who is going to use a VPN (an internet privacy tool) from Google?

9point6 ,

Probably jumping on the popularity of retro gaming

9point6 ,

Archive.org still exists and still has DMCA immunity*, you can get no-intro, goodset & redump sets on there. There is a gap in PC game ISOs currently though afaik, but steam and gog do seem to be good for covering most releases

Failing legal options, those sets will be available forever via BitTorrent

*If you’re in the US, please make sure your representative knows how important it is this continues—well, unless they’re a republican, in which case, probably better they stay oblivious if they don’t already know.

9point6 ,

The crazy thing is they are basically selling the same models this whole time too

9point6 ,

10 years seems pretty low for this tbh

Dell said return to the office or else—nearly half of workers chose “or else” - Workers stayed remote even when told they could no longer be promoted. (arstechnica.com)

Big tech companies are still trying to rally workers back into physical offices, and many workers are still not having it. Based on a recent report, computer-maker Dell has stumbled even more than most....

9point6 , (edited )

Atlassian have proven (along with a load of other companies and academic studies) that forcing people to work in an office is an anchor on productivity.

CEOs that are forcing their employees to come back into the office are willfully pissing away productivity.

That is arguably negligent from an investment perspective

Edit: fixed the link

9point6 ,

And I’m highlighting that it’s short-termist and self defeating

Companies like atlassian do what they can to make sure they don’t lose their best talent, what I linked is documented proof of that working.

Dell are trying to reduce costs by reducing the reasons an employee would want to stay.

Do you think they’re gonna lose the employees they would choose to?

No, they’re going to lose their best.

It’s pissing away productivity for no tangible benefit and doing so in a pretty permanent way—who is going to work for a company with that reputation?

It’s not just them nailing themselves into a coffin, it’s basically them pointing the nail gun at their face.

9point6 ,

You don’t need to be skilled in something to get enjoyment out of it

Likewise you don’t necessarily get enjoyment out of something just because you’re skilled in it.

9point6 ,

Because my brain is fundamentally incompatible with imperial measurements:

500psi is equivalent to about 35kg of weight stacked into a centimetre square (so 35bar / 3500kpa)

9point6 ,

Wanna know something weirder?

The official Google keyboard has undo too—just only on the Japanese locale (perhaps on similar languages too)

No idea why it’s not at least an option to put on the suggestion bar for every other language

9point6 ,

There are people who have a lot riding on the line going up (often the same people in high positions in the organisation)

All these whistleblowers make the line go down

Of the people psychopathic enough to accumulate enough wealth to have a significant stake in Boeing, there’s going to be a percentage who are full-psychopath.

It’s what unabated greed looks like

9point6 , (edited )

Holy shit, I wasn’t expecting to find out like this

Edit: looks like he’s still alive (source elsewhere in the comments)

9point6 , (edited )

… He has

Edit: fuck…

Edit 2: okay this is disputable, wait for more news

Edit 3: looks like he’s still alive (source elsewhere in the comments)

9point6 , (edited )

I’m sorry mate

Edit: okay this is disputable (see above thread), wait for more news

Edit 2: looks like he’s still alive (source elsewhere in the comments)

9point6 ,

Okay thanks, I hope he’s doing okay, I’ll update my comments

9point6 ,

Gyms are the worst for it, a friend of mine was recently told they had to come in person to cancel—they were planning to move to a different part of the country, so then had to make a pointless trip to the gym instead of spending that time packing.

9point6 ,

I’m a software engineer

You’re not getting anywhere above entry level in this industry without social skills

9point6 ,

I’ll add to the other person who replied:

Most work in this industry is done in teams, if you can’t effectively communicate and get on with your team members, you’re gonna have a bad time.

It’s even baked into the hiring process everywhere I’ve worked, most of the time an organisation would prefer to take a lower skill candidate if they seem like they’d get on well with everyone Vs a highly skilled candidate that would rub people up the wrong way.

It’s a lot easier to fill gaps in engineering ability compared to coaching someone how to behave around people

9point6 ,

Run a pihole or similar

Your web browser is just one piece of software on your network capable of displaying ads and collecting data

9point6 ,

So the main software is here pi-hole.net (and they have good documentation, so I’m not going to repeat the nitty-gritty here)

You obviously need something to run it on, which could be some existing computer that’s always on, but (as the name might suggest) a lot of people use some form of Raspberry Pi (or similar) single-board computer.

Pihole will run on basically anything, so you can get an ancient pi and it will still run fine

9point6 ,

You can always configure the DNS manually on a device you own to ignore the DHCP settings sent from the router and just go directly to the pihole, obviously not as good as it happening automatically, but a good workaround if that’s not possible

9point6 ,

I don’t know if this is a new meme format or not, but I’ve enjoyed seeing it on my feed today

9point6 ,

I value my mental health too much to regularly dive into the YouTube comment section

9point6 ,

Have you ever seen those videos of arbitrary code execution on a Gameboy with TAS tools? Where it spams every button for like 10 mins?

I’m now imagining a hypnotist flicking his pendulum around like it’s a yoyo

9point6 ,

This always messed with me as a kid because for no reason I can come up with, xylophone made sense as the metal one and glockenspiel made sense as the wood one

It took more effort than it should to unlearn this

9point6 ,

Right, so I’m not a low-level PC hardware expert or anything, but:

We only got resizable BAR like a couple of years ago, and it was very much a premium enthusiast feature at the time. Are modern engines and the games built for them optimised to expect resizable BAR as a baseline yet? If not that will still be a limiting factor right?

I thought the reason resizable BAR was introduced was because we hit the limits of what the previous approach allowed regardless of the speed of the link

i.e. of course it doesn’t make a difference with games today, they’re built targeting hardware configurations that will limit the utility of extra storage bandwidth

Reiterating that I might have this entirely wrong, so I’m more than happy to be corrected here

9point6 ,

I would also suggest the modern emulated alternatives if you struggle to get hold of the original hardware

MT32-pi: github.com/dwhinham/mt32-pi (covers the MT-32 & CM-32, can also do some general midi with sound fonts, so in theory you could emulate a soundcanvas too)

Then there’s the sound cards too

PicoGUS: github.com/polpo/picogus/ (emulates a Gravis Ultrasound, SB2, AdLib, Tandy & also the MPU401 if you do end up with real midi hardware)

Also gonna just drop the goldlib too: pcmidi.eu/goldlib.html but that one might be a bit separate from what OP is currently doing

9point6 ,

Ah that’s good to know, might be one for 86box then
