SuzyQ ,

It’s a great game. The devs seem really chill on their discord server. I highly suggest people try this game out even if visual novels aren’t your usual genre of games.

SuzyQ ,

I just bought myself a pair of parachute pants! They’re not nearly as loud as the wind breaker suits of the 90s and early 00s, but I love them.

SuzyQ ,

Memphis design for the colors and patterns, Y2K for the colorful translucent electronics, and Frutiger Aero for the GUIs.

I have a level that is a tribute to The Stanley Parable in my game, here is my progress. Any feedback? (lemmy.world)

My game is called Do Not Press The Button (To Delete The Multiverse) and in it I have a multiverse called A Universe Where This Game Was Made By People With Actual talent and it’s a “What If” the Crow Crows Crows guy made my game. I think it’s turning out good. What do you think? Here is my Steam Page

SuzyQ ,

The demo was fun. Apparently I’m a mediocre heartless monster.

SuzyQ ,

I remember us having an Atari computer along with some Compac computer running DOS in the late 80s. The computers I grew up with were models that we got for free from my dad’s workplace whenever they upgraded. We ran Win 3.1 until about '98. Win 95 was prevalent in the house until the mid '00s. Due to my dad’s job, we always had a computer of some sort in the house.

The computers in my elementary school’s computer lab were Apple 2es - in the 90s.

I didn’t get a cellphone until around 2004/2005, and then it was a hand-me-down from my older sister. The Nokia 5110 - the brick, complete with extendable antenna.

SuzyQ ,

I am anemic and bruise easily. It’s a quick blood test, but it’s easily rectified if that’s the cause.

SuzyQ ,

I appreciate this, and now I’m just waiting for it to show me family library games when browsing the store. I have games on my wishlist that another family member owns. A flag that says “family library” would be appreciated - similar to “in library” and "on wishlist."

  • I don’t see it when I browse the store on my steam deck or the mobile app. Unsure if it would show this to me on the desktop app.

Portable monitor for steamdeck?

I am in need of some help. I’m trying to find a good portable monitor for my steamdeck. I don’t need it to be huge, 12inches minimum, but I’m not having much luck with my own research. I would like low latency, high refresh rate, and colors as close to the same as on the og LCD deck (which is what I have)....

SuzyQ OP ,

Sorry for the belated reply.

I’ve seen those, or something like it. They would not work for me because 1) I wear glasses and 2) VR makes me motion sick. I really wish they would because the implementation is really cool.

SuzyQ OP ,

Sorry for the belated reply.

For the bigger screen and portability. My eyes aren’t as good as they used to be. My gaming laptop’s fans are dying, and this would be cheaper than a new laptop (sadly, it’s also showing it’s age and cannot be upgraded further). I use my deck at home 99.99% of the time so it wouldn’t be much more to setup a monitor along with it.

SuzyQ OP ,

Thanks for the information! I will give it a look. Sorry for the belated reply.

Thanks, I will give them a look. Sorry for the belated reply.

SuzyQ OP ,

Thanks! Whenever I get one and test it, I’ll do my best to write up a review here on the community as an update.

A warming island's mice are breeding out of control and eating seabirds. An extermination is planned (apnews.com)

Mice accidentally introduced to a remote island near Antarctica 200 years ago are breeding out of control because of climate change, and they are eating seabirds and causing major harm in a special nature reserve with “unique biodiversity.”...

SuzyQ ,

A single mouse will feed on a bird several times its size. Conservationists snapped a photo of one perched on the bloodied head of a wandering albatross chick. […] He said the birds have not developed the defense mechanisms to protect themselves against these unfamiliar predators and often sit there while mice nibble away at them. Sometimes multiple mice swarm over a bird.

Holy crap. Renewed fear of mice activated. I hope their plan goes as well as they’re planning. There’s no good solution here.

What should I add to my '90s website?

So I'm currently toying around with NeoCities, and decided to trial it by building your classic mid '90s Geocities/Tripod/Angelfire pastiche website.

Some of the most important elements are already in place.

Tile background? Large font? Heading in bright pink with a shadow? Unusual colour choices? Random cat gifs? Under construction gif? Check! Check! Check!

In the true spirit of the '90s DIY web, some more pages (including the links page) are coming soon.

(I'm thinking of adding a page dedicated to either Britney or a nu-metal band.)

You can see the page so far here: https://that90ssite.neocities.org/

There are a few things that I want to add to make it complete, and I'm looking for suggestions.

The first, is to embed a midi file that plays automatically. Any suggestions on the best way of doing this?

Second, it's just not going to be complete without a guestbook.

Third, any webring suggestions?

Fourth, what's the best way of adding a java chat room in 2024?

Finally, anything else that really needs to be a part of a great '90s website?

UPDATE: Thanks for all the feedback! I've added more annoying GIFs, a guestbook, a links page, and a cyber cat hangout.

UPDATE 2: And added even more gifs, an amazing Amiga demo, and a ton of links.

Blinkies - those small gifs that blinked to give the impression of glitter.

iframes - precursor to divs, but definitely added that “only works in IE” feel.

More contrast between font color and background image - it’s too easy to read.

12pt Times New Roman font - gotta squint to read and default font for everything

Flashy gif banner at your header and footer - bonus points if they’re the same image

All urls default to underlined blue and purple.

Mouse cursor with trails. The more sparkles, the better.

Clip art. Clip art everywhere.

Iowa House OKs bill to criminalize death of an "unborn person" despite IVF concerns (www.seattletimes.com)

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Republicans in Iowa’s House of Representatives approved a bill Thursday that would criminalize the death of an “unborn person” — over Democrats’ concerns about how it might apply to in vitro fertilization, after an Alabama court found frozen embryos can be considered children....

As a woman who still has her uterus and ovaries but who has gone into the “it’s dangerous to get pregnant at your age” territory: I’m scared shitless. My last pregnancy ended in a stillbirth and that in and of itself has scared me. I feel horrible for being thankful that it happened months before RvW got overturned. I’m just ready to get everything removed so there’s not even an iota of a chance of pregnancy.

SuzyQ ,

It’s a thing. It’s a disgusting thing, but it’s a thing. I remember, almost 30 years ago, my parents picking out a double wide trailer and they had to check a box to NOT get carpet in the bathrooms.

SuzyQ ,

Some people started singing it not knowing what it was

And they’ll continue singing it forever just because …

SuzyQ ,

Nothing. My two cents is just the microwave to heat up you water and add your tea of choice to steep afterwards.

SuzyQ ,

Hi. I’m a millennial raising gen z and gen alpha children.

SuzyQ ,

Our whole economy here in Arkansas is tied to this organization, so you can’t really get a fair trial

I think I may start quoting this when people ask why I don’t like Walmart. I think the article helped convey how much sway the company has over the state. It’s scary. Glad I no longer live there.

SuzyQ ,

For something totally different: tuna patties

  • 2 cans of tuna, drained
  • 1 egg
  • 1 sleeve of saltine crackers, crushed and divided
  • Worcestershire sauce, optional
  • Favorite frying oil

Crush crackers into crumbs. Set aside approximately 1/3-1/4 to bread patties. Put remainder into a bowl. Add egg and drained tuna. Add a few dashes of Worcestershire sauce if desired. Mix together and form patties. (I usually get 2 to 4 patties per can.) Coat outside with cracker crumbs, fry in oil until outer crackers are golden brown. Serve and eat.

Can also be made with canned salmon. My kids like eating them with ketchup or steak sauce. This is actually what I’ll be making for supper tomorrow night. You could totally eat this up with spicy ketchup.

SuzyQ ,

I swear this was in RvB. It’s completely on par with what they’d say.

What games did you complete this year?

Back on the other website, there used to be a sub called r/12in12 where people would try to beat 12, 24, 36+ games per year. I never really set myself any specific target like that, but the end of year reviews were always fun to read/write. Considering that I don’t think a single game I beat came out this year, I think this is...

SuzyQ ,

Finally completed Little Inferno plus the DLC that apparently dropped last year(???!!!). I think it hit me harder than when I first played it years ago.

Too many 100 hidden [object] or Cats Hidden in [City] type games to count. None cost a whole lot, and I feel like I got my money’s worth.

I’m trying to go through my growing digital libraries and complete what I can. (But we all know the winter sale is coming soon…)

SuzyQ ,

Not sure if this would count, but here it is:

  • Stovetop stuffing
  • Canned chicken

Boil water amount on the box in the electric kettle. Drain canned chicken. (Some brands need to be rinsed because of the amount of salt in the broth they’re canned in.) Add stuffing, butter (amount according to the box) and chicken into a bowl. Stir to incorporate. Add boiling water, stir again, and cover for 5 minutes. Fluff and serve.

I suggest using the low sodium version as there will be a lot of salt between the box of stuffing and canned chicken. Can also use leftover cooked chicken.

Black Ohio woman criminally charged after miscarriage underscores the perils of pregnancy post-Roe (apnews.com)

The 33-year-old Watts, who had not shared the news of her pregnancy even with her family, made her first prenatal visit to a doctor’s office behind Mercy Health-St. Joseph’s Hospital in Warren, a working-class city about 60 miles (100 kilometers) southeast of Cleveland....

SuzyQ ,

They left her waiting, knowing the baby was already dead, increasing her risk of potentially deadly complications. I see no problem here. The dead baby should have been removed.

She should not be charged with anything. There is medical neglect going on here and it’s obvious to me that her life was in jeopardy the longer she carried the dead baby.

I lost my last pregnancy at 20+ weeks due to premature break of my water. I didn’t even realize it had happened, the pregnancy was wanted even if it wasn’t planned, and I am still dealing with the trauma (and the hospital bills). All I can think of is I’m thankful it happened when it did and my doctor didn’t hesitate to induce labor - a medical induced abortion - so my life would be okay. (And I was able to get a copper IUD placed because I know my mental health could not survive the potential loss of another child.)

This poor woman… She is traumatized and our trash legal system wants to fine her and jail her. She needs support and love, not more debt and punishment. I screamed and cried in the hospital surrounded by support medical staff. She was in her bathroom…

This makes my blood boil. The government should have zero say in private medical decisions. Abortion is no one’s first choice.

SuzyQ ,

I know someone who had that. I remember their parents explaining how “red eye”, in photographs, meant a healthy eye and how their child had had a “green eye” which lead to the path of the initial diagnosis.

They are a healthy young adult now with a glass eye.

SuzyQ ,

Pre-prod is equivalent to the state of Schrodinger’s cat. Both there and not there at the same time.

SuzyQ ,

The Professor would be better cast as the guy Ruby Rod says is stone cold deaf, and who eventually rolls a billiards ball back to Bruce Willis’s character (I’m drawing a blank on names this morning).

If anything, Bender would make a better Ruby Rod and could cast Roberto as the flaming bad guy entity.

Hermes would make a good Zorg.

Alrighty, I’m thinking way too much into this. 😅 I’m stopping now.

TIL about this tool, the *Reinigungsschaber* ! (lemmy.world)

I had lost hope with my electric cooking plates. The white circles where completely hidden under a layer of diamond-grade burn residue that no amount of scrubbing with chemicals could even begin to remove. I found this 3€ scrapping tool and it’s amazing !!! Sorry, but I don’t have the before picture, believe me after 6...

SuzyQ ,

Bar keepers Friend, for the equivalent oxalic acid/ddbsa cleaner in your area will remove dark carbon from most surfaces, especially when used with a magic eraser/melamine sponge

I had no idea! Thank you! I keep this to clean my ceramic cast iron sink but had no idea that I could use this on my glass top stove and the burnt bottom of my pans!

SuzyQ ,

There are supposed to be two thumbnails of videos that show up. A golden Win and a red Fail. You are then supposed to click on your results (a draw equals a fail iirc) and it will take you to the next video.

SuzyQ ,

Seeing a rainbow in the sky. I know it’s just sunlight refracting through the water droplets but it is so gorgeous. I still get like the dude from the double rainbow video years ago because I still feel that way.

SuzyQ ,

Ha! This bitch is a Sagittarius! 🤣 lol

… Which I’ve read into in my younger years and often went “that’s not me, that’s not me at all.”

SuzyQ ,

Thanks for sharing! Downloading the demo now thanks to your post. Been so excited since I saw the announcement months ago. :):):)

SuzyQ ,

I feel that. It’s a crapshoot if I can get my kid’s meds each month at the pharmacy. Haven’t been able to get the generic for months, and we’re paying $50/month (with insurance) for the name brand. He truly needs his meds every day, but I’m just giving it to him on school days because of this crappy limbo of “will they or won’t they” every month. AND it’s not like we can get a 90 day supply. Oh nooooooo… it’s a controlled substance so a new script every 30 days.

gets off soapbox

I know I’m preaching to the choir by sharing this, but it’s becoming a worldwide issue that’s so frustrating for so many.

SuzyQ ,

Idk if it’s my app or what, but the link to the original post takes me to yiff… I’m using Connect on Android.

SuzyQ ,

It’s the only one we pay for. ~$35USD/year for the family plan is worth it to us.

A cyberattack against Clorox last month that shut down factories has created a nationwide shortage of bleach and cat litter (fortune.com)

A cyberattack against Clorox last month that shut down factories has created a nationwide shortage of bleach and cat litter::The producer of disinfectants, wipes, cat litter, salad dressing and cleaners said some of its US factories still aren’t making goods

SuzyQ ,

Hidden Valley Ranch is owned by Clorox.

SuzyQ ,

Clorox owns Hidden Valley Ranch brand of salad dressings. They also own Burt’s Bees cosmetics. I’m unsure which cat litter they own. They also own Kingsford charcoal.

Source: I’m a retail merchandiser who has done several jobs for Clorox the past several months and I’ve had to run around the store from one department to another for various audits.

SuzyQ ,

:) I love it. Makes total sense to this American lol

SuzyQ ,

I am also part of the Top 6hr gang. There are dozens of us! :)

How the fuck can I kill 20 hours?

My 13 hour flight just got delayed 7 hours, I’m stuck at my second airport, and I dont think I’m gonna make it. I have some movies and audio books on my phone, but really only anticipated having to burn the flight time via napping and some media, not 7 hours leading up to it, and I’m pretty sure I’m gonna mentally burn...

SuzyQ ,

If you like DOS games, ScummVM has an android app for their emulator and then you could hit up abandonware sites for nostalgia games. Works for some Win95 games as well. Played Woodruff on my phone a few years ago, an ISO file inside ScummVM, and besides the aspect ratio being a bit off it was playable.

I tend to go back to mindless puzzle games on my phone and set weird challenges for myself. I like HexaMania and InBlock by AleksDev. I paid for no ads, iirc 99¢USD, and haven’t regretted it. No freeminum b.s. in those two. (There is a HexaMania 2 by the same person, but even with paying for no ads it has a pay to keep playing mechanic that keeps me away from it.)

Flow Free is a great connect the dot series of games that you can get the full game through Google Play Pass. Hundreds of levels per game. And with it being on GPP, you get unlimited hints if you get stuck.

If you want an exploration sandbox game, there are always Minecraft and Terraria to enjoy.

Einstein Riddle by Rottz Games, also in GPP, is a good logic puzzle game.
