William Faulkner has some wonderful stories about the WW1 days when people would go up in these rickety planes with a handgun, and take potshots with it with one hand while they flew the plane with the other, or take up a big basket of hand grenades and be lobbing them down at people on the ground while the people on the ground were shooting at them with infantry weapons.

Pilots in war have always been nuts, but there's levels of nuts.

PugJesus OP ,

I love seeing pictures of WW1 infantry preparing to let loose an anti-aircraft volley from their bolt-action rifles. What a wild time of military developments

Somewhere there is a Vietnam book where an American pilot told a story about "One-Shot Charlie". There was an old Vietnamese man in some village who had some kind of ancient rifle, and every time they were flying nearby, he'd come out of his house and fire a single shot at the aircraft going past him half a mile up or whatever, and then go back inside. Just kind of a "I hate the fuck out of you but all I have is this rifle but fuck yes I will do my part."

They loved him. They never tried to attack him and I think would have been legitimately angry if someone had tried to hurt him. When you are in war you find your moments of safety and humor where you can.

Flight of the Intruder opens with an A-6 bombadier being hit and killed by a round from a bolt-action rifle at low altitude.

The thing about any crackpot argument for “ancient electricity” that just dawned on me, is that they call it The Bronze Age for a reason, the ancients insisted on the versatility of their metal (bronze = copper + tin) over its’ conductivity (pure copper).

There was a more ancient Copper Age, but it was brief, bronze was the definition of a technological leap forward.

I had to look that one up.

I admit, I’ve been using EndeavorOS everywhere that isn’t a server, and I’m not ashamed; like my doctor says: there’s no reward for being in pain; it’s not a contest.

blindbunny ,

I use Manjaro because I’m too lazy to install arch and I could never get endeavor to boot. I just wanna play Titanfall 2 and play with ardour and freecad don’t make fun of me 😅

FiskFisk33 ,

Completely valid, there´s nothing to make fun of here :)

It’s a good choice. Just avoid installing stuff from the AUR (at least no system packages)

Then your top is doing it wrong; just saying.

azvasKvklenko ,

What are you talking about? I wish I could do stuff like installing or managing my Arch installations more often, as it’s very relaxing and satisfying. The problem is, my installs never break and there’s nothing to do about them most of the time. I work in IT however and my job throws rocks at me all the time with some bullshit corporate software and horrible Sysadm/DevOps practices and boy’oboy is it frustrating….

archinstall has made me actually use the system smoothly and be able to learn using a gui while doing other stuff, big fan !!

being able to research on my pc instead of on my phone is a game changer, streamlining the install process is great

I’m no chemist but - can you lick a gas?

Edit: pick

dogsoahC ,

Define “lick”.

whereBeWaldo ,

Just freeze them

Tar_alcaran ,

If you lick anything at minus 200, you’re going to have a bad time.

alcoholicorn ,

You can lick liquid nitrogen, that’s pretty close

Tar_alcaran ,

Can you really?

alcoholicorn ,

You’ve never seen the trick where you put a small amount of liquid nitrogen in your mouth to demonstrate… science, IDK something to do with lederhosen?

Don’t swallow it though, then you’ll get a perforated stomach.

Tar_alcaran ,

I’m not entirely sure that’s completely accurate…

Contravariant ,

You can stick your tongue in it. Wouldn’t recommend actually trying to get anything in your mouth.

You’re protected by the thin layer of nitrogen that immediately sublimates, this lasts until the nitrogen heats up so the liquid can touch you directly, which you want to avoid.

For mostly the same reason you can stick a finger into molten lead (without losing said finger), provided you do it fast enough and your finger is wet enough.

That was my schoolmate…

whereBeWaldo ,

Same concern. It’s even arguable you can only lick solids (and lap liquids). This would make hydrogen a Must Not Lick, for example, if we could only consider solid forms.

I don’t get why people love Muppets so much. I pretty much grew up without it, and I think one time my mom let us take a Muppet movie home from the library when I was a kid, and it was… Alright. I guess.

Anyone care to explain what they like about about them?

lepinkainen ,

It’s the craft.

Multiple actors who have played against Sesame Street characters like Elmo have said that they forget there is a human hidden under the puppet - they’re that good.

CoolMatt ,

Hmm… If it weren’t for those sticks controlling their hands, I might have been convinced too lol.

explodicle ,

One probably tunes it out after a while. And professional actors are probably much better than average at convincing their brains that a fictional situation is real.

tigeruppercut ,

The show is the best of the muppets, not the movies. Some of them are decent, but judging the show by the movies is like trying to understand SNL by watching Blues Brothers and Night at the Roxbury.

gianni ,
@gianni@lemmy.ca avatar

I’m sorry but Night at the Roxbury is better than SNL.

tigeruppercut ,

Hot take

myusernameis ,

As an adult who grew up on sesame street and the muppets, it’s just the unabashed wholesomeness that I love. They were preaching inclusivity when I was growing up in a time/place that tried to force conformity. They weren’t cool, they were themselves, and that’s never a bad message for kids (or adults).

The newer movie (The Muppets 2011), co-written by Jason Segal, who also grew up with The Muppets, captures that vibe perfectly IMHO.

quicksand ,

Jason Segal is awesome

intensely_human , to science_memes in Chemists of Lemmy, how accurate is this likability table?

Oh yeah just lick the carbon. It’s probably fine.

elbucho ,
@elbucho@lemmy.world avatar

Tastes like a campfire.

Maalus ,

It is. Activated carbon is used to treat diarrhoea, you basically swallow a chunk of carbon that absorbs any moisture it comes across

FireRetardant ,

Activated carbon is also used in water treatment to remove taste/odours and many organic pollutants.

intensely_human ,

“organic pollutants” are made of carbon too

5oap10116 ,

Don’t lick carbon nano tubes or buckyball. Also in general carbon powder can be a particulate inhalation issue.

model_tar_gz ,

The table is about licking specifically. It’s not a breathability table. Just so that is clear.

5oap10116 ,

I assume if it’s getting anywhere near your mouth you’d also be breathing it but aside from that, ingestion is also a nogo.

model_tar_gz , (edited )

The ingestion/breathability table might be more restrictive. Like, elemental Sulfur is perfectly fineno actually it’s not fine— but probably unpleasant to lick. Contact dermatitis likely but not life threatening—just one lick, ok; promise no more? ;)

Breathing elemental Sulfur is also going to result in contact dermatitis -inside the lungs. Which is going make a really bad day.

MotoAsh ,

Not moisture but reactive molecules. (I mean, many forms probably do still absorb a good bit but) I forgot the exact chemistry but “activated” means chemically reactive. It binds with all sorts of reactive molecules, like toxins and many other things.

intensely_human ,

Diarrhea is also mostly carbon.
