‘They miscalculated’: Gaza’s floating aid pier failing to deliver in rough seas (www.theguardian.com)

The pier has been usable for just 12 days since it began operations on 17 May. On most of those days the assistance arriving by sea has had to be left on the beach as there have been no trucks to distribute it to warehouses in Gaza, because of lack of security....

I hope they learn good lessons from this. The main strength of the US military is its logistics, and being unable to deploy a simple pier is concerning.

U.S. Military Planes Are in Haiti. Haitians Don’t Know Why. (foreignpolicy.com)

In the past several weeks, I have watched dozens of sleek U.S. military planes descend over Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, where I live. They were the first flights to land since gangs blockaded and halted commercial air traffic in March. U.S. news reports suggest that the aircraft contained...

a Kenyan-led security mission to Haiti

This is very odd, but also very intriguing. The President met with Biden a month ago, so this tracks. I kinda hope this happens just to see how it plays out.

Edit: this will also be a great test of who reads past the headline. There are going to be a lot of knee-jerk “Murica Bad” comments.

cygnus ,
@cygnus@lemmy.ca avatar

Ha, sorry about that — the President of Kenya, actually. whitehouse.gov/…/fact-sheet-kenya-state-visit-to-…

cygnus ,
@cygnus@lemmy.ca avatar

Americans don’t seem to understand that every time they swoop in to ‘save’ Haiti, what they are really doing is enforcing the same colonial ideals that landed Haiti in the mess to start with.

You might find the article reassures you on this point if you decide to read it!

The truth is that the United States outsourced the Haiti mission to Kenya. U.S. President Joe Biden has admitted as much: “We concluded that for the United States to deploy forces in the hemisphere just raises all kinds of questions that can be easily misrepresented about what we’re trying to do,” Biden said in May during a news conference with Kenyan President William Ruto, adding, “So, we set out to find a partner or partners who would lead the effort that we would participate in.”

cygnus ,
@cygnus@lemmy.ca avatar

What would convince you?

cygnus ,
@cygnus@lemmy.ca avatar

Kenya as far as I know has no experience in operations of this type — do you think it’s reasonable to expect them to do this alone? It makes sense that the US are helping to get this up and running. I expect a fuller handoff when whatever they’re doing is in place.

cygnus ,
@cygnus@lemmy.ca avatar

I would prefer to see a non-military solution.

Me too, but that would only really work if Haiti had a functional government to maintain order. Unfortunately that ship has sailed.

cygnus ,
@cygnus@lemmy.ca avatar

A real solution for Haiti needs to come from and be supported by the people.

Of course, but it’s impossible for them to do that when the country is under the thumb of warlords. Having a successful former colonial state helping stabilize things makes a lot of sense. Kenya has been there and done that.

I was wondering how they “punctured” this military vessel, then I watched the video… They’re fighting it out on freaking zodiacs.

Ironic username!

They didn’t judge you on skin color […] but they were still […] racist as fuck.

I don’t understand which definition of “racist” you’re using here, but OK. Romans didn’t care what colour you were, as long as you were educated and spoke good Latin. They even had two Maghrebin emperors.

I don’t care what I sound like, they’re also one of the few leaders/nations who successfully defended against American capitalist aggression attempting to destabilize their government to open up its resources/people to our owner’s merciless exploitation in their insatiable need for infinite growth/metastasis on a finite world, and remove as many potential global examples of alternative economic systems as possible, a feat many South American nations that dared to attempt a better future for their people failed to accomplish defending against.

And yet somehow I doubt you live there. Nor do the thousands of people who risk their life to escape every year.

Yeah, the US are awful too, but it doesn’t logically follow that Cuba is great just because they’re an “adversary”. This isn’t a comic book — it’s possible for both sides to be bad.

China’s approach to international relations is truly remarkable. It’s like they’re deliberately trying to alienate every other country. Do they have a single non-vassal ally?

cygnus ,
@cygnus@lemmy.ca avatar

BRICS is a fabrication of Goldman Sachs and is little more than a punchline. What kind of “alliance” has its two biggest members actively involved in a border conflict? Also, has a single one of them stepped in to “help” Russia invade Ukraine?

Supermassive black hole roars to life as astronomers watch in real time (arstechnica.com)

In December 2019, astronomers were surprised to observe a long-quiet galaxy, 300 million light-years away, suddenly come alive, emitting ultraviolet, optical, and infrared light into space. Far from quieting down again, by February of this year, the galaxy had begun emitting X-ray light; it is becoming more active. Astronomers...

It works exactly like Photoshop always did.

Unequivocally false (source: been a PS user since version 7)

cygnus ,
@cygnus@lemmy.ca avatar

I was using Mac OS 9 at the time! But PS 7’s workflow was already pretty similar to what it is today, and far more intuitive than GIMP which I tried for the first time in 2006-ish.

cygnus ,
@cygnus@lemmy.ca avatar

I also find that intuitive is a relative term. Relative based on your own experience.

That’s a very good point. As a counterpoint though, pretty much every other app (Affinity Photo, Photopea, even Krita to a certain extent) emulates the PS workflow, which makes GIMP feel even more odd. Its paradigm was probably OK in the early 00s but the world has moved on.

cygnus ,
@cygnus@lemmy.ca avatar

Totally understandable in your case. I’d like to see GIMP merge the PhotoGIMP project and make further modifications to bring the app more in line with current best practices. They could make the “classic” vs “modern” UI toggle-able on first launch. Its underlying functionality is not bad, but it’s just so far outside of what people are used to today. It’s like like asking a random 20-year-old to use dialup and Netscape Navigator.

Canadian warship sharing an anchorage with Russian vessels in Cuba (www.cbc.ca)

The Royal Canadian Navy now finds itself in the unusual position of both shadowing Russian warships as a threat in the Caribbean and sharing an anchorage with them as a guest in the port of Havana — because Canada accepted an invitation to send a patrol ship to Cuba while the Russian navy is in town....

cygnus ,
@cygnus@lemmy.ca avatar

I didn’t know Cuba was actively supporting Russia.

Cuba has been staunchly aligned with Russia for like 70 years. That was the major reason for the US embargo in the first place.

Somebody whose job or context prevents them from saying what they really think (something along the lines of “that person is a fucking moron”)

cygnus ,
@cygnus@lemmy.ca avatar

Yup. From a legal standpoint this was the right decision. Too bad the SC isn’t always so punctilious in its rulings.

cygnus ,
@cygnus@lemmy.ca avatar

Sorry, I don’t endorse opinions like yours who advocate for a rogue Supreme Court that disregards the law and does what it wants. Change the law if you want to ban bump stocks.

cygnus ,
@cygnus@lemmy.ca avatar

No they don’t. Lawmakers do, for failing to pass a law banning bump stocks. What exactly do you think is the role of a judge?

cygnus ,
@cygnus@lemmy.ca avatar

OK, so you want more of the same just because this particular case aligns with your preferences? How about demanding a SC that narrowly does its job without acting like they it gets to decide what the law is?

“We weren’t looking at this from a public health perspective,” said a senior military officer involved in the program. “We were looking at how we could drag China through the mud.”

cygnus ,
@cygnus@lemmy.ca avatar

someone with a fucking conscience in the command chain should have stopped this.

Based on the article it sounds like many on the US side did strongly oppose this, which is slightly reassuring. I’m going to tell myself the goons that went ahead with this were MAGA.

One notable example cited in the lawsuit is a mural commissioned by General Mills in 2005 at the Covington plant. Designed by a member of the “Good Ole Boys,” the mural depicted characters from General Mills cereals in the likeness of Confederate figures, such as Sonny the Cuckoo Bird as Jefferson Davis, Chef Wendell as Robert E. Lee, and Buzz the Bee as Stonewall Jackson. The mural was only removed in 2021.

I just can’t… Is this satire?
