That song came out just 6 months ago (Oct 2023) and was number one on the charts. A ton of young people will have heard that and been influenced on some level by it, so the Apple fanboy/android hater thing probably won’t be going away any time soon
I’ve written this a couple of times now, so this is gonna be the last one: it’s not about the wealth it displays, the conspicuous consumption.
Consider the term “Nintendo fanboy.” Do they buy it because of the image? To impress everybody that they own Nintendo products? No, they defend Nintendo and are staunch advocates of the company and their games, unwilling to be critical or consider where other companies/products might be better. They’re basically zealots for a product. Cost and what it says about your status are not top of mind.
There are people who buy Apple products for the social image, to flaunt wealth. That is not the same as the fanboy.
I think that’s because pretty much everything just happens on the internet now. Most specialized applications are either built cross platform or are a website, so it really doesn’t matter what you use that much. It’s just down to personal preference

There is no doubt a lot of people by iPhone because of the image of wealth it displays and because it’s an easy decision if you have disposable income from a “set it and forget it” standpoint. The green vs blue text nonsense illustrates that clearly.
It’s like buying designer handbags. They’re still functional handbags and you don’t have to think about it. But it’s primarily about what the brand says about you. I just don’t consider this the domain of “fanboys.” Like I don’t describe Nintendo fanboys as people who buy Nintendo to show off they own Nintendo products. while they are not the same, a lot of people who use either Apple or Samsung are both, and will constantly fight against right to repair when they don’t know what they’re even talking about, for very stupid reasons, and constantly fight against open standards that are just better, like using type-c for their products, etc etc. these people buy iPhones for the image of wealth, I agree, but these same people also argue about its apps and ecosystem’s and argue that rich, trillion dollar companies are fine and pose no threat, because it is completely fine to be a monopoly and choke hold the industry. they defend their status symbol in every opportunity they get, and often times I’ve seen them make it personal, probably because its personal for them.

This has started to change, but the change is very recent. And in the startup ecosystem using a Mac is a standard and if you do not like them, you are considered weird and the latest social note keeping tool everybody else uses in the company has severe bugs on Linux, if it even works.
I just had a colleague mock me (good naturedly) the other day for having an android phone. I just laughed and said, I’m no fan of Google but at least I can install what I want on here. That was the end of it, haha.
Thanks to Lemmy, I’m finding out people think socialism is a political agenda and do not understand that any political alignment, whether capitalist ,ommunist, and (in this case) ultra nationalist can have socialist values. I don’t think any country in WW2 managed to participate without socialism. At least not any that managed to fight long enough.
Participation of tribalism here gets Facebook levels of cringe at times.

I’m not big of a fan of Chinese surveillance but to most peoples point that have already posted here, if this was about privacy then the government should be passing laws to protect consumer privacy as a whole and not just targeting Chinese companies. Really shows that the government doesn’t give a shit about your privacy just who’s able to get it.
Edit to add: I’m talking about the US. The 13th amendment didn’t outlaw slavery, all it takes is for the government to decide you are a criminal and you’re now legally a slave. You can imagine this might be a good reason to not want the US government involved in your privacy because it can lead to you being a literal slave.

To be clear: I don’t want to get spied upon by anyone and I don’t use most of the American services for that reason. But obviously domestic bad actors are better than bad actors controlled by a foreign and hostile government
It would be a lot better if Congress could pass a comprehensive privacy bill, but we lack a functioning government so I guess this is the best we can do.

Why is it contentious that a government can better curb foreign interference if it is done on a domestic platform? Regardless of how shitty the United States are that’s a simple fact and also practiced by China, only to a much greater extent.

If you need more examples - What happened to Facebook after the Cambridge Analytica scandal? They got banned by congress right? They got shut down? The government stopped them from continuing to manipulate the public?
It’s crazy to me that people such as you unironically believe the position you’re saying that American companies are easier to crack down on.
We are literally seeing concrete proof in action that domestic companies are much harder to crack down on or regulate. They are much better positioned to lobby and are currently using their immense political power to protect themselves while removing their foreign rivals. There isn’t even talk of taking action against them because they are so politically powerful.

It doesn’t matter for this argument what atrocities they committed elsewhere or how poorly the country is run in various ways.
Besides, China does the exact same thing itself. All foreign corporations in the country operate under strict regulations or as junior partners to Chinese companies, and can and will be kicked out for much less than what tiktok does. And those corporations are not directly tied to foreign governments as tiktok is.
There is no whataboutism in pointing out your argument is reversed and completely false. Also, “whataboutism” is a dog whistle word used by Westerners for deflection used to abrupt or end the argument when there are no real counterpoints. And since US government loves to demonize their “near-peer competitors” (official term) China and Russia, it is perfectly fair to argue with US in perspective.

My parents had a bed built for their minivan with ample storage and a thick layer of latex foam. They did some trips around the US using that, though ultimately it turns out they’re just not great sleepers.
I would have to imagine they have something in place for when it rains, thunder (without rain) would be awesome, you’re in the mountains with few neighbours so wouldn’t worry about dogs barking, and if you’re worried about snails you could put some salt down I guess.
