Smarttubenext. I even install it on every hotel TV I use.

michael_palmer ,

I would not pay anyway. This is a principled position after I was shown a fraudulent advertisement 10 times in one evening (which used children with cancer to manipulate emotions)

michael_palmer ,

Open browser and go to piped/individious page. If your console doesn’t have browser than suffer.

michael_palmer ,

It seems that Youtube’s IT department has decided to utilize the budget and show investors that they are not getting paid for nothing. After all, Youtube is only testing a new type of advertising, and there are already a dozen solutions to the problem in the comments.

No parts manufacturers will do the extra work to make them work for Linux

They just don’t want to. Now they can stop releasing security patches and users would buy new hardware.

HP bricks ProBook laptops with bad BIOS delivered via automatic updates — many users face black screen after Windows pushes new firmware (www.tomshardware.com)

On May 26, a user on HP’s support forums reported that a forced, automatic BIOS update had bricked their HP ProBook 455 G7 into an unusable state. Subsequently, other users have joined the thread to sound off about experiencing the same issue....

I have an HP 530 from 2007, and its hinges are fine. I upgraded it to 2 GB of RAM (I have core2duo model) and installed Linux Mint. I use it at work to open the corporate web portal and watch youtube, which is only possible with a modern web browser.

Linux on old School Machines?

Hi all, the private school I work at has a tonne of old windows 7/8 era desktops in a student library. The place really needs upgrades but they never seem to prioritise replacing these machines. Ive installed Linux on some older laptops of mine and was wondering if you all think it would be worth throwing a light Linux distro on...

I’m running Gnome 46 on i3 3217U with 4GB RAM. Works so smooth, maybe even better than Cinnamon. SSD makes all the difference.

michael_palmer ,

If you have root, you can try acc magisk module. I can set charging treshhold and limit charging current with it.

michael_palmer ,

Use the adapter plug as mentioned.

Type C can’t spin 360°. I have a 90-degree 3.5mm jack, which doesn’t create a risk of breaking the port, so I can put my phone in my pocket in any position.

Hurts waterproofing, phone slimness and design

Check out the Sony Xperia 10. It’s the smallest phone on the market with a 3.5mm jack, micro SD slot, 5000 mAh battery, and IP68 rating.

Nothing was taken away. It’s literally just combined with another port now.

Haha, remember 2000s, when most phones were using proprietary connector for both charging and headphones output? Everyone hated that stuff.

michael_palmer ,

PostmarketOS devs have made huge improvements over the past year. Now it can be used for daily driving. Some functions do not work simply due to the lack of drivers.

michael_palmer ,

I mean that phones had combo port both for charging and headphones. Using adapters was annoying. And if you saying that 3.5mm is obsolete than why newest Macbooks have 3.5mm port?

Lutris can execute scripts before launching game and after closing game. I use this to disable “win” key in games.

I always say into the microphone of my smartphone, “I know you’re listening to me.” If they are really listening to me, they will get scared. And if not, no one will know about it.

    I can’t live without dash-to-dock extension.

I just finished setting up Linux Mint for an old buddy of mine on his old dog of a laptop, rendering it useful once again! (i.imgur.com)

Edit 2: to everyone suggesting an SDD: i know. Look, if this guy had enough $$$ for an SSD, he could buy a used lappy less than half the age of this one that has an ssd and 2-3x the memory....

Torrenting exposes your public IP. In a country where government doesn't care, does that pose a risk?

I honestly don’t believe I will have any legal trouble because I don’t do anything like cp or worse, I just pirate media I like, not even porn. But across users of communities, or on public trackers, is IP exposure something to be concerned about?

I am selfhosting VPN for 2.49$ a month. Speed is up to 700 mbps in my case and I have additional services like PiHole + unbound.

    michael_palmer ,

But if the server is located in a piracy-friendly country, doesn’t that solve the problem?

    michael_palmer ,

To find out my real IP address, you need to contact a hosting provider that is registered in a country with laws that allow it not to cooperate with authorities.

Battery use on OLED when screen black but not "off"?

Hey, what’s up. I’ve been trying to get my phone (oneplus 8) all perfect again, after I recently decided not to use fingerprint security anymore. I now use a password, which feels right, but when I’m just sitting at my desk it feels like overkill to have to retype it so many times when I’m just checking little things....

I think that Android doesn’t enter sleep mode properly. Also touchscreen remains active which also draws power.

    Android app dependency? (slrpnk.net)

I have found the translation from camera source feature useful in Google Translate and I use it from time to time. Last night was one such occasion, yet when I attempted to enable camera mode, I received the message shown in the screenshot, “Please install the latest Google app in order to use camera translation”. Does anyone know why vendors keep using crappy UD fingerprint sensors? The power button scanner in some Redmi phones was the best type of scanner I’ve ever used. Literally, I pull out my phone from my pocket already unlocked.

    michael_palmer ,

Today it happened for the first time for me. I use arch btw.

After reading all the comments, I think the best solution is to buy a used Ascend P6 and swap the displays.

    Multifunction Laser Printer and Linux

My faithful Brother laser printer just poo’d itself. And since I’ve not purchased a new printer with additional features since I switched to full-time Linux, I thought I’d better ask around to make sure the document scanning, copy, fax (maybe once a year if that), and other features will work correctly....

I use AtlasOS tweaks with Windows 10 and my system never suggests an upgrade to Windows 11 although updates and MS Store works fine. AtlasOS is the thing that make Windows at least usable.

Tried photopea on my phone. It’s laggy. I use cracked version of “Photo Editor” for making memes.

New versions of Android have made turning off mobile data more inconvenient. Now, you need to tap twice instead of just once in previous versions.

I dismantled several cheap inkjet printers for parts. There are countless useful parts inside for my future DIY projects. 24-volt power supplies, several motors, pulleys, belts, hundreds of small bolts.
