Not even in the Mayo clinic?

Fair enough, how are you doing now? Any word out from them yet?

zout ,

For what it's worth, I hope they find something to get you well again.

I read your warning, and I still clicked the link. And then I threw up a little in my mouth.

The link is correct, but direct linking is blocked for some reason. If you go to the link from here you will get the article.

Trump Apparently Has a List of Things He Loves About Adolf Hitler (newrepublic.com)

In his new book The Return of Great Powers, which comes out Tuesday, reporter Jim Sciutto interviews several of Trump’s former advisers. All of them stressed that Trump regularly lavished praise on authoritarian leaders around the world, calling Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán “fantastic,” Chinese President Xi...

We use rince aid for dish washing machines. Works great.

Not really shocking, but very well outside of the jurisdiction of MI5 and an abuse of power by the politicians.

How is the data for February in other years? A quick Google didn't give me this data, but I gathered that the number of fires in the wet season can vary wildly from year to year, where more fires occur in El Ninõ years.

Damn, after reading the first paragraph I really tought this was going to include masturbation by insertion of an eggplant. Now I'm a little disappointed to be honest.

zout ,

A person I know used to work as a nurse in an operating room, stuff like this happens more often than you'd think. I haven't heard an eggplant mentioned by them though.

What's the food young children make in other cultures?

In the US it’s not crazy for kids maybe as young as 6 to make themselves sandwiches like a PB&J/Ham & Cheese either if parents have an emergency, or to take to lunch for themselves because parents didn’t have time. (Or you know, they’re neglectful)...

zout ,

There's no rye bread with herring in your photo, the Danish don't eat that? The Dutch do, topped with some chopped onions. Though my kids don't like rye bread, it is getting old fashioned over here.

zout ,

The general idea is that these parties do not want to be seen as anti-semetic, especially considering the German past. Which leads to no criticism towards Israel whatsoever. It's a shame actually, because this opens the door to the AfD party, who dont have qualms about these kind of things.

zout ,

I take it that you're not a parent. So, if Snapchat is not able to know that someone is a sex offender, how is a parent to know? All you can do as a parent is talk to your kids about the dangers of these kind of apps. Sure, you could, and maybe should, forbid usage of these apps, but at the end of the day you're not looking over your kids shoulders 24/7.

In the Netherlands we've always had coaxial connections as long as I can remember. A quick google search tells me this has been so since the introduction of TV in the 1940's.

300 ohm is only for the folded dipole antennas which have a four times higher impedance than a single dipole. So you don't need to use a balun with a roof antenna, just the right type of dipole.

Tips for falljng back to sleep

I wake up at 3am to 4am daily as a neighbor makes noise walking their dog. This cannot be helped. Once I am awake, my mind won’t stop going over details about everything from the mundane to the critical. Often, I am able to fall asleep again after three or more hours of wakefulness, but only minutes before I have to wake for...

zout ,
  1. Make sure you can't see a clock at night. Not knowing how late it is will stop your mind from going over at least one detail, how much time you have left to sleep.
  2. Get a notebook next to your bed so you can write things down if something urgent comes up in your mind. If you're like me, changes are you'll never write down anything.
  3. Try to not think about anything for 10 seconds or better 10 breaths. No toughts whatsoever.
  4. If everything fails, have a book or e-reader ready, so you can relax while reading for a bit. Nothing with LCD screens though, they tend to wake you up even more.

I'm Dutch, and I would have never tought this to be a typical Dutch dish. TIL.

At this rate with this mentality, we are going to have photo "evidence" of bigfoot and UFO's before 2030.

I should have specified that I mean the x-files type of UFO's, containing aliens.

Not in my book. They asked him if he would rename his package, he replied sorry but I'm building a project with this name, and they replied that they were going to send lawyers to do takedowns if he would release his project. This would also rub me the wrong way. Also, the dev was already working on the package before the kik company ever came to NPM. Why would he have to give up on the name for his project?

zout ,

I get that, but suppose you start a package on NPM named "bronk". Sometime later someone starts a company with that name. Should you just be forced to give up your package name, just because people suddenly associate the name with the company?

zout ,

The dev could claim something like "prior art", or whatever the alternative is for software. Suppose I trademark the name "is-odd" for a company, should NPM now hand me the "is-odd" package name? This would surely break the internet in the same way is an this case.

Mine's the Dutch word for salt. It's derived from a longer username I used to have, which was slang for a sexual act.

Nothing fancy in being Dutch. I am Dutch indeed.

Pronounciation differs in Italian, so when they mispronounce, it probably wont't sound like their American counter parts.

zout ,

It's the same word on paper, but pronounced different. Italians tend to speak the vowels longer, with a slightly different sound (the "a" in American sounds like an "uh", in Italian like a long "ah"). They also speak out both t's separately.

zout ,

No idea really.

zout ,

This one. I don't like the other things you mention. I did join a sub reddit on the topic years ago, but it was awful. Full of people who didn't know anything of the subject, but were very willing to downvote.

zout ,

These are the same people who would condemn gays.

zout ,

Not all gay people engage in anal sex.

Not for me. Take in consideration that I don't do a lot of shopping. Two of the maybe four times times I used a self check-out last year;

  1. So I go to the self check-out. One of my items is on clearance. I scan it. It shows full price. turns out I needed to scan a different bar-code for the clearance. However, I can't remove the already scanned bar-code from the list, so now I need to call assistance.
  2. My kids drink a lot of coke zero, so when it goes on sale I usually buy a lot of it. In this case, I took all that's left in the store. I scan one bottle, do a quick count and adjust the number of bottles accordingly. I place the bottle in my cart and realize I've counted one too many. I can't take it off, and now need to call assistance.
zout ,

The boots theory assumes that the price is related to the quality of the product. Today, this might not be the case.

zout ,

I'm an engineer. Most of the time I solve the tricky technical problems. Other times I design some new technical thing, or I think of new ways to do something.

That sums it up.

Imagine finding a suspect with this method, and not taking their actual finger prints to check if the match is correct.

I'd go with hydraulic cilinders. Lot's of people have died accidently using those, so should work perfect when it's not an accident.

I just hope no wars will be started over here (western Europe) in the next ten years, so my sons won't get drafted.

I was among the last to get drafted (I'm 48). After my year they stopped drafting, but they never cancelled the draft bill.

Police in Serbia fire tear gas at election protesters threatening to storm capital’s city hall (www.chicagotribune.com)

Just to be factual; This letter was signed by Einstein among others, and not written by him. Also, yes Einstein was a smart guy, and a famous physicist who publicized some grand theories. He was not however a political expert. So while you may agree with his views on the state of Israel, don't proclaim it as the absolute truth because Einstein said it. Because he was a layman in these matters. A well informed and smart layman, but still a layman.

The reason for this rant is that you can find way too much doctors and Phd's today wo will give opinions on things like climate change or Corona vaccins, while their field of expertise is something like ancient history or oil drilling. And people are swallowing it because someone really smart said it, and it gives them a way to ignore the real experts.

Back to the letter above, the alphabetically second person to sign the letter was Hannah Arendt, and she was a philosopher and an expert on the works of totalitarian governments. So if you want to give weight to this letters by using the name if one of the signees, I'd advise to use her name. And mention Einstein as an aside just to get the clicks.

In my experience this is because they confuse an 80% change of rain with 80% of the time it's gonna rain.

YSK: You can search (most of?) lemmy as a search engine

Due to the nature of fediverse, you can’t just do a “site:lemmy” search as you’d do with reddit (site:reddit.com). I was searching for ways to do it on my firefox browsers and I came to a solution that searches 21 different instances simultaneously, which I consider to be a big part of lemmy (I also include kbin...

This might work for now, but some people will abuse this at some time to draw traffic to their cluckbait sites. Like in the old days with "index of" "parent dir" to find open dirs.
