Usually very poorly. It’s pretty rare that a self-hosted or small site is secure. Just last week one of our clients needed help with some stuff and I was mortified when I looked at their production environment. Being obscure surely helps.

rikudou ,

What’s so special about it? Isn’t it just a repository? Or am I missing something? If it’s just a repo, Ubuntu has PPAs and everyone and their mother is creating PPAs.

rikudou ,

This one will surely stick!

rikudou ,

I’m still salty about Google Inbox. Though I don’t use Google mail anymore.

rikudou ,

That’s actually a great distinction.

rikudou ,

I wish we had the same mentality as French when it comes to protesting. Here people generally complain in a pub while drinking beer.

rikudou ,

Yeah, I don’t like that part. On the other hand, peaceful protests don’t change anything.

rikudou ,

As @erre said, you have to ask the admin to allow undetermined or change your instance.

Lucky for us, Russia takes human rights seriously. Right?

A really silly question about lemmy instances I believe

Hello folks! I created the MetalVinyl a few days ago and was just having a look on some other instances (I am on lemmy world and the sub was also created there - I believe?). Weirdly if I head over to lemm.ee or beehaw.org and try to find it, it’s not showing up but I can see other subs from lemmy.world? Did I do anything...

rikudou ,

You have to search for it with its full name on the target instance, for example !metalvinyl (not sure it’s the correct handle, fix the name yourself if it isn’t). That way the instance in question learns it exists. And after someone subscribes, it starts pulling the content regularly.

rikudou ,

That’s most likely because you created an account on lemmy.world, which is currently overwhelmed by new users. You can try registering on another instance (they all have access to the same communities, I’m for example replying from a different instance than lemmy.world to your post on lemmy.world).

You can try checking for some instance here: lemmy.fediverse.observer/list

rikudou ,

I think it worked out of the box on Jerboa for me? Haven’t tried Connect. But it should work, if it doesn’t, it’s probably the app’s problem, not Lemmy in general.

rikudou ,

Or you can switch instances.

The Bezana (Spain) City Council (PP and Vox) censors the film ‘Lightyear’ for a kiss between two women (247newsagency.com)

The Department of Culture of the City Council of Bezana directed by vox with the approval of the mayor Carmen Perez Tejedor (PP), has decided censor the screening of the film ‘Lightyear’ at the local summer cinema for the scene in which they appear two women kissing....

rikudou ,

Congrats! I was in a similar boat some years ago and yes, it’s normal. I remember how nervous I was the days before I would start because I was sure they’ll change their mind last minute.

rikudou ,

I loved the original and I love the concept in general, so count me in!

rikudou ,

Just standard stuff, not from US so it’s a day like any other. We have bank holiday tomorrow and overmorrow, that’s when the real fun starts.

rikudou ,

5th is day of Cyril and Methodius, IIRC those two basically brought a writing script to our lands (along with Christianity which is less appreciated, but well).

6th is anniversary of burning of Jan Hus. He criticized the moral failings in Christianity and they responded by burning him.

rikudou ,

Oh, nice!

rikudou ,

I believe it can, at least Lemmy. Not saying it will or won’t, just that it can. I don’t use Mastodon (or Twitter) enough to have an opinion on that.

rikudou ,

Obviously he claims that, what is he gonna say? “Ladies and gentlemen, we’re weak as fuck, pls stop.”

rikudou ,

What a blasphemy! Expect a Jihad soon.

rikudou ,

So… Is “eat the rich” still a thing?

(Controversial) Should lemmy.world close registrations at a certain user count?

To support decentralization and spread, should lemmy.world close registration at some point to prevent a performance overload due to too many users? Of course, if registration is disabled, there could be a hint placed somewhere near that from other instances you can interact with content on lemmy.world just like you had...

rikudou ,

If the hint and instructions are clearly visible then it sounds like a great idea.

rikudou ,

I think you might br actually right, though I would have to check.

rikudou ,

How would the “Share link to Fediverse” even work?

rikudou ,

Yeah, site specific share links suck. The https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/Navigator/share is what everyone should support and use.

‘We need a lot more’: Lack of firepower hampers Ukraine’s advance on Zaporizhzhia front line (www.france24.com)

As Ukraine’s top army general has put it, every metre of ground in the country’s counteroffensive is being won “with blood”. The Ukrainian soldiers’ progress is particularly gruelling in the southeastern Zaporizhzhia region. FRANCE 24’s Gwendoline Debono reports from the front line, where Russian forces are giving...

rikudou ,

I just wish everyone would send them anything they need to drive Russians away. This has been going on for way too long.

Is there a major difference between Lemmy and Beehaw (or other federated instances)?

Hello everyone! Long time redditor, first time poster to Lemmy.world. As I’m learning more about the Fediverse, I’m seeing there are several instances that seem to serve the same purpose. For example, Lemmy and Beehaw seem to be similar, yet they are still separate....

rikudou ,

Pretty much choose the instance that has rules you agree with, the number of communities on an instance shouldn’t be a factor because you can browse (and participate in) communities on other instances. Edit: Also, using some smaller instance might make the experience better for you, they’re not as overloaded and thus faster.

rikudou ,

If you want, you can join mine, lemmings.world! It’s new, but I plan on hosting it long-term. As a bonus, you can proudly call yourself a lemming.

rikudou ,

What do you mean by missing communities?

rikudou ,

All communities exist across the fediverse, it doesn’t matter on which instance you personally are. Or am I missing something?

rikudou ,

Yeah, defederation exists but that doesn’t (shouldn’t?) happen that often.

rikudou OP ,

I really wanted to like the first one, but I couldn’t get into it.

rikudou ,

If you’re in central Europe, feel free to join mine!

rikudou ,

If someone’s looking for an instance, feel free to use mine, lemmings.world. As a bonus, you can call yourself a lemming! It’s hosted in Germany.

rikudou ,

Yay, welcome among Lemmings!

rikudou ,

Can’t you just follow the official instructions as those are for docker?

rikudou ,

I think the problem might be needing high school to learn reading and writing. Here we teach it 6yo.

rikudou ,

Because your login information is not content, the ActivityPub protocol that’s used for federation synchronizes content. If federation of login information would be possible, I could just create an instance, let it synchronize, and have everyone’s login data (with hashed passwords, but it’s much easier to crack locally stored passwords than on an online service). Also your pictures aren’t federated, that’s (probably) not to overwhelm other instances with huge amounts of data.

rikudou ,

Try joining a smaller instance, most of the performance issues will go away.

YSK: If you want faster and less buggy User experience, move to a smaller instance that is hosted close to you.

I have been using Lemmy for 20 days, at first I opened an account at Lemmy.world because you can join without writing a text and waiting approval. I have been enjoying the experience overall but despite the admin teans best efforts Lemmy.world has been experiencing some serious performance issues. If you want to avoid that join...

rikudou ,

300 ms is a lot for a website. It feels slow. Cloudflare could help with traffic but I think the main culprit here is the database.

is there an email Fediverse thingy?

I’ve been looking into the Fediverse and it seems like something I want to get more accustomed to. But iw as wondering if there was an email one based on it? I’ve got like Gmail and outlooks. But I also have a rarely used protonmail. So, I was wondering, is Proton good enough. Or is there a Fediverse alternative?

rikudou ,

I use it only for sharing external files, so desktop client doesn’t really matter to me. I haven’t much tried even the mobile apps, my flow is pretty much upload file via web, copy link and send it (it was the same with Google Drive for me). For automatic synchronization of files I use a mix of Synology Drive and Syncthing.

rikudou ,

I think it’s too far off. It’s more like countries joining European Union - they are still individual countries, but they share stuff with all other countries that are part of the union/federation.
