They shouldn’t even be hiring writers without a science degree

As you mentioned, it’s a Technology News Site, not a Science News Site. Sounds a little arbitrary.

rikudou ,

The OneUI is actually rather nice.

rikudou ,

A lot of people definitely don’t realize what rooting actually means. If a user blindly accepts all permissions, there’s no way it can be framed as an OS problem, that’s definitely a user problem. If an app requests permission I think it shouldn’t have, I deny it. If the app doesn’t work afterwards, I don’t need the app.

rikudou ,

Condescending much?

rikudou ,

Try SailfishOS! Currently replying to you using it.

rikudou ,

Seems to work on my SailfishOS phone.

rikudou ,

Apple’s biggest success is convincing people they care about your privacy.

Do you use the swipe to type feature on your phone?

Is this how most people type on mobile these days, drawing lines all over a keyboard instead of tapping the individual keys? I've never had an iPhone so I don't even know if they can do this natively, but I know you can switch keyboards at least, so it should still be an option if not.

rikudou ,

I’d love to, my phone doesn’t support it, though. In the past I’ve used it every time.

rikudou OP ,

The sharing is there, we use it together with my partner, otherwise it wouldn’t be that much useful. I would say the e2e encryption and privacy focus is the main difference, other than that it doesn’t have any features other apps have and probably has less features than some paid apps. Another difference is that you can reach me personally, tell me your idea and if it makes sense, it will be there. Another great thing is that it’s made with configurability in mind, you can tailor the app to your needs (for example, setting a gap between feedings for it to still be considered one feeding session, whether to calculate the time since feeding from the beginning or end of feeding, etc.)

rikudou ,

There’s that one Lemmy instance that has a bot that posts content scrapped from Reddit, I forgot the name though.

rikudou ,

Solution:

export type unsigned_int = number

We’re currently adding AI support to our platform for email marketing and it’s crazy what can be done. Whole campaigns (including links to products or articles) made entirely by GPT-4 and Stable Diffusion. You just need to proofread it afterwards and it’s done. Takes 15 minutes tops (including the proofreading).

rikudou ,

Nope, it really takes 15 minutes, you don’t get full access to GPT, you only get to parts, the rest of the prompt is filled by our app.

rikudou ,

Well, it’ll save a lot of time that they’ll be spending somewhere else and be more effective. I’ve worked as a dev in a marketing company or two and the backlog is always full, so it’s not like there will be shortage of tasks to work on when one part of the work gets replaced by AI.

rikudou ,

Standard proxy is when your outgoing traffic is proxied through it. Reverse is when the incoming traffic is proxied.

rikudou ,

Which is a different platform, they’re not counted together.

rikudou ,

Who has actually gained productivity from using Copilot? Maybe it’s just me, but it slowed me down.

rikudou ,

I tried it with php which also has a huge amount of code online. The constant checking of the generated code and fixing it was what slowed me down.

TIL that the descendants of the Wittelsbach family, that reigned the Bavaria until 1918, still receive 14 million euros annually (castleholic.com)

Descendants of the Wittelsbach family, that reigned the Bavaria until 1918, still receive 14 million euros annually from a compensation fund that was established 100 years ago. The head of the family also has the right to live in Schloss Nymphenburg in Munich.

rikudou ,

AWS Lambda is the best for this, my bots run on it. That is, if you’re ok with some delay in response. Otherwise an EC2 might work.

rikudou ,

Changing the port seems like a pointless step, just disallow access from everywhere and allow only from select IPs. Port scanners will scan all open ports and will detect that it’s ssh, regardless of port number.

rikudou ,

Just firewall the port and there’s no difference for your hypothetical script kiddies. Don’t ever do security by obscurity.

rikudou ,

McFly, can’t live without it anymore.

rikudou ,

Yeah, next year is definitely gonna be it!

rikudou ,

On a serious note, I’ve started to believe it might actually happen one day, in large thanks to Valve and Steam Deck.

rikudou ,

At least it realistic. Communism always fails.

TIL lemmy.ml is a pro-authoritarian CCP shill instance (lemmy.ml)

For all the newcomers that aren’t aware, I just stumbled upon this insane drama. Apparently lemmy.ml is the result of a reddit sub ban of a bunch of pro-china bots who vigorously defend the Chinese government, and the two top admins are also the top devs of the Lemmy source software. Pretty terrible stuff!...

rikudou ,

It’s not about disagreement. Disagreement is when you think chocolate ice cream is better than vanilla ice cream when obviously vanilla ice cream is superior. Promoting hate groups and genocidal monsters is not just a disagreement.

rikudou ,

Why are you being intentionally obtuse?

rikudou ,

In the context of the original post, sure, I can discuss shortcomings of communism with you all you want, but as soon as you start to glorify monsters like Stalin or Mao or other mass-murderers that just hide behind communism, I’m gonna block you.

rikudou ,

If you feel like that’s what I said, sure, go on.

rikudou ,

Congrats, you’ve won an argument with yourself.

Seeking Affordable GPT-4 + Search Alternatives to Perplexity.ai

I’m looking for more cost-effective alternatives to Perplexity.ai that offer GPT-4 integration along with search capabilities for factual assistance, ideally around $5/month instead of the $20/month subscription fee for Perplexity.ai. I’ve come across Nuggt (github.com/Nuggt-dev/Nuggt), but it seems to rely solely on a local...

rikudou ,

It’s doable on your own, you can use embeddings for prefiltering (searching) what you want and then provide the top results as a context for GPT. Or if you have existing search, you can skip the embeddings and just feed GPT the top results.

The dominance of cat content VS dog content on Lemmy reflects its current techie userbase

I originally joined Reddit in 2011, and in the beginning it was dominated by cat content. It was rare to see a post about dogs. Sometime in the mid 20-teens this phenomenon reversed. It’s always been a “pet theory” of mine that this reversal was due to Reddit becoming mainstream, and that it’s initial nerdy/techie user...

Email and hashed password. If you’re like most people and use the same password everywhere, they gain access to everything if they manage to crack it.

rikudou ,

I don’t know, but given the fact that it’s 2023 and it’s open source, I’d say yes.

rikudou ,

Same here, you can join mine. It’s professionally hosted on a server, not some home made NAS. lemmings.world

rikudou ,

Well, that’s one way to solve the problem with people having PTSD.

rikudou ,

Generally, choose any instance hosted in European Union and you should be good to go.

rikudou ,

Sounds like you might have depression, maybe try looking into that. Good luck with everything!

rikudou ,

It’s the whole vibe of your response - the whole feeling of helplessness is often associated with depression, being overwhelmed by life is also a very frequent symptom of depression.

Being high-functioning and motivated to carry out with life doesn’t mean you’re not depressed.

I’m not saying you are depressed, that can’t be diagnosed over few simple comments, I’m just saying you sound like you might be depressed and it might be good to go check with a professional if that’s the case.

rikudou ,

dominant age group on reddit is around 13 years

That might very well be true, but it doesn’t match my personal experience at all.

If this is a barrier for some people, preventing them from joining, I think that might be a benefit

Let’s not pretend we’re somehow better people just because we figured out how Fediverse and Lemmy works.

rikudou ,

More like he found out those that promised to help him chickened out.
