The bot has been banned here, take it up with the mods, they’re the ones unnecessarily banning it.

rikudou ,

Prime Minister isn’t the head of state, no?

rikudou ,

Same in Czechia. Though I guess we were taught from a slightly different angle than you guys.

rikudou ,

Tldr: the new store only supports snaps, deb support will come later. OP, please provide summary next time if you link to clickbait articles.

rikudou ,

Not sure how old your experience with Linux is, but gaming is really great nowadays, thanks to Valve and Steam Deck.

Has anyone else been trying to break their reddit-era habit of downvoting?

I used to downvote fairly often on Reddit as a sign to disagree or to push down really disgusting bigoted comments. And to be honest, it became a habit to just downvote without replying. However, now that I’m on lemmy and not Reddit I’ve been actively trying to not instantly downvote things and instead move on or take the...

rikudou ,

Nope. Downvotes are there to be used, so I use them.

rikudou ,

I did yesterday or so.

rikudou ,

@ChatGPT Explain in simple terms what are the risks for Fediverse if a large corporation like Meta joined it.

rikudou ,

I can record a video tomorrow if it helps?

rikudou ,

The name, it’s the best of all of them.

rikudou ,

Can’t speak for all the points but subscriber count is per instance, meaning you see the subscriber count from the instance you’re on.

rikudou ,

Yeah, we’re gonna need more than 60 test subjects before something that can send people to a prison is used. Unless you live in US of course, you guys go and have fun!

rikudou ,

Cute puppy. When in doubt, cute puppy is always the answer.

rikudou ,
rikudou ,

If you have some ideas for the banner, I can try making them with AI tomorrow.

rikudou ,

Never too late to start! The AI is called Stable Diffusion (this UI is the best). Model is Realistic Vision V3. You’ll find plenty of guides on r/StableDiffusion, sadly nothing I know of here on Lemmy. You can check some people’s creations on !imageai.

rikudou ,

Yep, they do, that’s how I implemented a ChatGPT bot.

rikudou ,

It also works without the link, juat the name is enough.

rikudou , (edited )

Edit: It seems it has been banned here, but anywhere else you just mention @ChatGPT in your comment and the bot will reply.

rikudou ,

I meant without literal link, like you just write the name as a texr, you still need to include the domain (as far as I know).

rikudou ,

Plex is great and fits all your points. You can even mark a certain library to not be shown on homepage, so your porn won’t be showing between your regular movies.

rikudou ,

if Google decided to start forcing changes

They already do. If they want an api for their next web project, they just create it. Sure, first they offer to make it a standard but if others disagree, they just make the api and encourage people to use it. This is IE all over again.

rikudou ,

Cinnamon. Stupidly simple and elegant looking.

rikudou ,

Yeah, especially the bots on social media are the worst. Am I not right, @ChatGPT?

rikudou ,

Please link in a format that works for people on different instances: !nemmy.

rikudou ,

For me it’s mostly against judges. Like judges that decide that because the victim of a rape doesn’t remember the rape (because it was so horrible her brain blocked it out), the perpetrator should be free.

Or those judges that decide that there’s not enough proof that a billionaire-owned chemical factory polluted a river that most of the fish died, even though there’s only one chemical factory on the river that could have done it.

(Those both are local issues you probably haven’t heard of)

Would you want any of those judges give a warrant to someone to spy on you?

rikudou ,

Some things probably should stay on Reddit. Like poop-knives.

lemmy profile settings: Why should i checkmark both bot accounts boxes? (lemmy.world)

In the profile settings (direct from website browser, not app or app affiliate) it states “show bot account” and then right above it it says “bot accounts” with check marks for each much how we select if we want to see nsfw posts....

rikudou ,

Not a question, but we use 418 in production! We have a nginx router that routes pages based on its path to either old frontend or new frontend. I wanted some easy way to handle the routing (and to not repeat myself), so I set the new frontend as a handler for 418 error and then just return 418 in the nginx for any page I want on new UI. I chose 418 because the others could be actually used by the old frontend and it could get all weird.

rikudou ,

No. The instance needs access to the data. And the admin has a full access to the database where everything is stored. Encryption wouldn’t help because the admin also has access to the decryption key.

rikudou ,

Did someone expect otherwise? That may be why they’re not in EU yet, that should be (legally) impossible under GDPR.

rikudou , (edited )

Not really, censorship isn’t the solution.

Edit: I just woke up when I wrote the original comment and I can see that it’s not the clearest piece of text I’ve ever produced. What I meant is that I fully agree with defederating (and I’ll do it on my instance), but I don’t think censoring Meta in the core technology (ActivityPub) is the way to go.

rikudou ,

I agree with that.

I disagree with this part:

They should put a hard-coded Meta blocker into activityhub

Though I can see that my comment might seem very misleading (in my defense, I just woke up when I wrote it).

rikudou ,

My comment was a little misleading, I updated it with what I actually meant.

rikudou ,

Changeable definitely, would have to think about whether default block is the smart thing to do. It’s hard, I really dislike Meta, but on the other hand if you go censoring instances by default, where does it stop?

IMO this should be the job of articles that tell you how to setup Lemmy, mentioning something like “Note that by default you also allow Meta the access to your instance which might mean privacy breach, here’s how you disable it.”

rikudou ,

What you post is also a personal information. And while it’s required for the service to function (meaning they don’t need your permission to store it), they need your permission to use it for marketing purposes, which is pretty much the only reason Meta would even want your data.

rikudou ,

What tutorial have you followed? I followed the official one with docker and it worked flawlessly.

rikudou ,

I assume the VM is some kind of Linux server? Ot is there something specific to Oracle Cloud?

rikudou ,

Then it should work with this: join-lemmy.org/docs/…/install_docker.html

Here are the commands, basically:

Installing docker

From this doc: docs.docker.com/engine/install/ubuntu/

  • for pkg in docker.io docker-doc docker-compose podman-docker containerd runc; do sudo apt-get remove $pkg; done
  • apt-get update
  • apt-get install ca-certificates curl gnupg
  • install -m 0755 -d /etc/apt/keyrings
  • curl -fsSL https://download.docker.com/linux/ubuntu/gpg | gpg --dearmor -o /etc/apt/keyrings/docker.gpg
  • chmod a+r /etc/apt/keyrings/docker.gpg
  • echo “deb [arch=”$(dpkg --print-architecture)" signed-by=/etc/apt/keyrings/docker.gpg] https://download.docker.com/linux/ubuntu “$(. /etc/os-release && echo “$VERSION_CODENAME”)” stable" | tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/docker.list > /dev/null
  • apt-get update
  • apt-get install docker-ce docker-ce-cli containerd.io docker-buildx-plugin docker-compose-plugin docker-compose

This series of commands installed an official docker repository in your system so docker itself is always up-to-date, Ubuntu gets updates like this kinda slowly.

Installing Lemmy

From this doc: join-lemmy.org/docs/…/install_docker.html

  • mkdir /opt/lemmy
  • cd /opt/lemmy
  • wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/LemmyNet/lemmy-ansible/main/templates/docker-compose.yml
  • wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/LemmyNet/lemmy-ansible/main/examples/config.hjson -O lemmy.hjson
  • wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/LemmyNet/lemmy-ansible/main/templates/nginx_internal.conf
  • wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/LemmyNet/lemmy-ansible/main/examples/customPostgresql.conf
  • Edit all the downloaded files (for example using nano) and change everything that starts with {{ and ends with }}
  • mkdir -p volumes/pictrs
  • chown -R 991:991 volumes/pictrs
  • docker-compose up -d

Installing webserver

I chose Caddy, you can choose a different one but then you’ll have to check on your own.

From this guide: caddyserver.com/docs/install#debian-ubuntu-raspbi…

  • apt install -y debian-keyring debian-archive-keyring apt-transport-https
  • curl -1sLf ‘https://dl.cloudsmith.io/public/caddy/stable/gpg.key’ | gpg --dearmor -o /usr/share/keyrings/caddy-stable-archive-keyring.gpg
  • curl -1sLf ‘https://dl.cloudsmith.io/public/caddy/stable/debian.deb.txt’ | tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/caddy-stable.list
  • apt update
  • apt install caddy
  • Edit the file /etc/caddy/Caddyfile (for example using nano /etc/caddy/Caddyfile)
  • Paste this content (replace domain.tld with your Lemmy instance domain and the 1236 with the port you have configured in the docker-compose.yml file for {{ lemmy_port }}):
<pre style="background-color:#ffffff;">
<span style="color:#323232;">domain.tld {
</span><span style="color:#323232;">        @http {
</span><span style="color:#323232;">                protocol http
</span><span style="color:#323232;">        }
</span><span style="color:#323232;">        redir @http https://{host}{uri}
</span><span style="color:#323232;">        reverse_proxy localhost:1236
</span><span style="color:#323232;">}
</span>

Hope I haven’t forgotten anything, feel free to ask.

Edit: After all the commands, restart caddy with service caddy restart.

rikudou ,

I don’t think peaceful protests changed anything, ever.

rikudou ,

The simple and free and beloved one

You’re not giving Bitwarden much credit here. It’s really great.

rikudou ,

Yeah, sure, it’s not like the French are famous for protesting about everything.

Just looked at photos and there are all ethnicities present, including French people. You might want to take your racism elsewhere.

rikudou OP ,

Nice! Work book club sounds like a dream.

rikudou OP ,

I kinda gave up on reading physical books, so I feel you on that.
