is there an email Fediverse thingy?

I’ve been looking into the Fediverse and it seems like something I want to get more accustomed to. But iw as wondering if there was an email one based on it? I’ve got like Gmail and outlooks. But I also have a rarely used protonmail. So, I was wondering, is Proton good enough. Or is there a Fediverse alternative?

I can recommend getting serious with Proton and getting rid of Gmail. I’ve started two years ago and now I have the Gmail account only for some historical stuff, I use it like once a month.

IMO it will diversify into kind of walled gardens, there will be servers that’ll defederate all commercial communities and those that will welcome them. And all those in-between. And people will choose their servers.

Why are big platforms shutting down third-party Apps? Should an average user be worried?

With the recent Reddit stuff and YouTube stuff, I realized I’ve been using numerous third party apps or services. The question I have is why the decision and how such decisions would really benefit the company. As an random user, should I be worried about it or even go back to the official Apps just in case the third-party...

As for the reasons, there are many, but all of them boil down to the company losing money (or thinking it’s losing money).

For example Reddit, they don’t show you ads in 3rd-party apps, so you access the content but don’t make them money (directly).

Why go back preemptively? If they shut down, switch to official apps (or leave the site), before that enjoy any 3rd-party app you like.

How do server upkeep costs look like for fediverse stuff?

I’m pretty new to the fediverse, and I find the idea amazing. But one thing concerns me though. How will server owners be able to afford to run servers with massive amounts of data coming through them? Theoretically speaking, if a Reddit migration were to happen how would server upkeep costs look like?

That really depends on how many users and communities you have. It can be in single digits for small servers and hundreds (or even thousands) for the bigger ones. And everything in between for medium-size servers.

Are there any Reddit refugees spending more time on Lemmy than Reddit?

I am theoretically switching over from Reddit to Lemmy. Finding myself spending more time on Lemmy than on Reddit.
