Frankly, people should be entitled to own their likenesses. I’m not a lawyer, but it seems like the examples they mention in the article; - parody, public figures, film rights, etc. - are already pretty well carved out in the courts.

I can’t just make a biopic about Michael Jackson… I would need rights to the footage and permission from his estate.

I can’t use a photo of Tom Hanks to promote a film he isn’t i, even if I took the photo (and therefore own it). If I don’t sign the release, they have to blur my face in a documentary.

Celebrities already have certain established rights to the use of their likeness, and in this day and age those rights should really extend to everyone.

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Parody is an exception. That’s just my point. These legalities already exist. Nixon is also a public figure so his public life is fair game.

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

There is such a thing as life rights. According to this firm, they act as a protection against lawsuits related to publicity rights, invasion of privacy, and defamation.

So, a documentarian could report on the public aspects of Michael Jackson’s life, but if I wanted to discuss or speculate about his private life, I would need rights from his estate.

There are lots of exceptions, such as public interest, etc. But again, I’m not a lawyer. (Is there a legal lemmy presence?)

Depicting someone is not at all illegal.

Fraud would only be if you were using the likeness under false pretenses (such as claiming that it is the real person) to cause another person to act to their detriment in some way.

Iranian journalists celebrating release from jail charged for not wearing hijab (www.theguardian.com)

Two female journalists, who were released on bail from prison in Iran on Sunday, having spent 17 months in jail for reporting on the death of Mahsa Amini*, have been charged under the country’s hijab laws after pictures were published of them celebrating their release with their heads uncovered....

Iranian journalists released on bail after 17 months in prison for coverage of Mahsa Amini's death (www.cbc.ca)

Niloufar Hamedi, who broke the news of Amini’s death while in police custody for wearing her headscarf too loose, and Elaheh Mohammadi, who wrote about Amini’s funeral, were sentenced to seven and six years in prison, respectively, in October, on charges including collaborating with the U.S. government....

In Iran, it’s a potential death sentence at the hands of the Morality Police for a woman to expose her hair. On top of that, it’s also illegal to report on this fact without being tried in a kangaroo court for sedition.

I’m not sure why companies constantly try to buy up open source software. It’s already open source. If they want to develop on top of it, in most cases they already can. They’re not going to win any points with the open source community. The project will just be immediately forked and people will use the new FOSS version.

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

I suppose it’s silly of me to assume that anyone using a FOSS app is automatically not an idiot lol

Considering that they are now bombing civilians and attacking boats it seems like a reasonable move

This has been going on for a long time. They have never shied away from attacking their neighbors.

If we don’t begin to wrap our heads around the way that Iran arms and funds terrorist proxy groups as a matter of Foreign Relations policy, then we never have a hope of understanding the path toward peace in the Middle East.

There is also the option to sort by “active,” which is not exactly what you are describing but makes it more likely to see older content. Some apps default to this sorting mode

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

I think they are talking about moderators locking threads. There should maybe be a “lock for 30 days” option that would allow threads to open up after things cool down. Although if a post led to abuse in the past, perhaps it is likely to do the same later on.

Do you have a source for any of that? Historically, the Latin Church has leaned liberal.

The religious = irrationally conservative dynamic is a pretty broad stereotype.

Want to Report in New York City's Police Headquarters? The NYPD Says You Need a Chaperone (hellgatenyc.com)

Exactly this. I left Xitter because the moderation became so bad that literal bigoted harassment of entire communities was left unchecked. What are my options? Stay or leave.

I left reddit because the server became hostile to the ways that it was useful to me (third part app usage, corrupt moderation and administration, etc.). Again, the options were to stay or go.

If any of those problems were to happen here on lemmy.world, I could migrate to another instance and still have access to the platform.

Outlook honestly was not that bad for a while, but of course Microsoft does what Microsoft does. I’ve been using Thunderbird for about a year now and it is very full featured coming directly from outlook.

I use if for exchange and gmail - it’s pretty robust. Plus, they are approaching completion of their mobile app which has similar capabilities

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

For me, Mail was a little anemic. It’s nice to have a more full-featured option, but I agree that it’s a mistake for MS to can the Mail App that met 90% of people’s needs.

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Like all open source software, there’s more of a build-it-yourself ethos. I was able to customize it to my liking to replace most of the functions of Outlook. Someone here mentioned the focused View which was hit or miss to be honest, but it did a good job of filtering out most of the nonsense.

It took a little bit of time to get the settings, layout, and add-ons that I wanted for my workflow. The best thing about switching is honestly how quick it is, how easy it is to have all my emails open in one window with tabs, and above and beyond all, a super powerful, super quick search. I feel like modern searches across all software are doing away with Boolean operations, thinking they can replace it with AI rankings. A straightforward search that lets me find exactly what I’m looking for and nothing I’m not feels like a superpower in this day and age.

3 migrants, including 2 kids, drowned in Eagle Pass days after Texas blocked Border Patrol from area, congressman says (www.cnn.com)

Three migrants, a woman and two children, drowned Saturday in the Rio Grande in Eagle Pass, Texas – very recently the epicenter of the migrant crisis – just days after state authorities blocked the US Border Patrol from accessing miles of the US-Mexico border, according to a post on X by Rep. Sounds a lot like “it’s better for people to die rather than to go from one place to another without the correct documents.”

Like all law enforcement agencies, CBP is interested in maintaining order. It is better for them to apprehend and process those crossing the border without documentation than to deliberately make the crossing more dangerous.

Not everyone who enters the USA without a visa is breaking the law. Not all types of illegal immigration are the same. The only way to make that determination is by apprehending undocumented migrants.

Becker called October 7 “the largest calculated mass murder of Jews since the Holocaust” … to respond “to the slaughter of October 7 which Hamas has vowed to repeat.”

…is the author implying that it wasn’t the largest calculated mass murder of Jews since the Holocaust?

Hamas has vowed to repeat the Oct 7 attacks. Publicly, clearly, and multiple times on international TV.

Unfortunately, I’m sure you’re right. I’m not sure how the younger generations will afford to foot the already astronomical bill for Boomer healthcare. Meanwhile, actual healthcare reforms would benefit everyone and in fact end up costing far less.

I find that the quality of content is totally different here. The level of engagement is similar for me. Most of my posts and comments get about the same engagement as I saw when I was on Reddit, and often a better quality. There are some niche communities that just don’t exist (yet), and there are some crowdsourced communities that don’t really transfer without huge numbers of people (things like AITA, mildly interesting, oddly satisfying, etc.). I do miss some of those aspects, but the interactions and information here are just better and less troll-y.
