Wow I used to know this conspiracy lady who was into aliens and past lives who used to go ON about Opus Dei being the secret organization stealing kids and controlling the levers of power in the Church and world government. Maybe she was right all along. I just thought she had an active imagination!

Sorry, I haven’t seen it. If it’s been posted here before, Send me the link to the previous post, and I’ll take this one down. Even better, you can report the post, and the mods will investigate it.

Thank you!

Thanks, this looks like different reporting on the same story. That happens with major news, but I can understand why it may seem like excess if it’s not a story you’re interested in.

I do occasionally find Lemmy in web search results. The platform is not that big (or old), but as long as it sticks around then eventually searchability will improve.

I especially love the image, which is both a literal and a figurative illustration of AI failure.

It’s clearly meant to be an ouroborus made out of tech. The AI image generator left out the key trait - it’s supposed to be eating itself.

I don’t totally understand how or when article image headers populate.

All of the moderation here is done by actual human beings who are (mostly) reasonable. If they make a mistake, you can just message them, and they’ll fix it. No one is banned by an algorithm.

In reality, you can’t actually be banned from lemmy, because it’s a federated platform. You can only be banned from an instance.

He specifically said in this speech that Israel would not resettle Gaza. It’s maybe the first time we’ve seen him directly oppose the radical wing of his government that has advocated for it.

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

I believe it was a politically risky statement for him to make explicitly.

If he alienates his Right Wing, they could dismantle the government and force elections at will. In the past he has used vague statements or diversions to avoid making public statements that could pose political risks to him. No one was demanding an answer on the issue (and he left out plenty of issues that US lawmakers HAVE demanded to know about).

The better question is: Why would he take the risk of saying it at all?

It seems like there are enough of these people that a unscrupulous lawyer could really fill the niche and make a lot of money. “Yes, just sign over power of attorney to me and I can represent your strawman to sever that from your court appearance.”

There’s an interesting take… maybe sovcits are not really wrong-headed fundamentalist morons. Maybe they are just desperate enough that it makes as much sense as the alternative. In this economy, can any of us really afford not to try sovcit life?

I never heard that before. I always thought it was the Arab states who pushed for it after the 1948 wa because they didn’t want to absorb the refugees.

Do you have any source that addresses this?

gedaliyah ,

Is this news or commentary?

I believe that unless it is resolved, the end of the war will only be temporary.

I believe that bringing a Palestinian state into being at least on paper would help bring that about more than anything else the U.S. could do.

Why sex bias in labs means women are the losers in research into ageing (www.theguardian.com)

Extending the human lifespan is a multibillion-pound industry and has been hailed as the most fascinating scientific challenge in modern history. But if a drug to achieve longevity is ever discovered, one thing looks certain: it is highly unlikely to work on women – and almost inconceivable that it will work on mothers....

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Not just ageing either. The reason that a lot of medications say not to take if you are pregnant is not because they studied it and determined that it could be dangerous. It’s because they didn’t bother to study it at all.

A lot of studies will choose to only study men because women are likely to have periods, get pregnant, etc. You know, normal human life.

And it should surprise no one that it’s mostly white people, too.

That may be a thought. I could organize the photos first and then do multiple takeouts. Thanks

gedaliyah OP ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Wow thanks for that. I was looking into github.com/…/GooglePhotosTakeoutHelper but I haven’t gotten to that step yet

gedaliyah OP ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

What download manager did you use? I’ve tried with whatever’s built into Firefox on two different networks and similar results. The downloads freeze every so often and I have to restart them (it picks up where it left off). Sometimes it just won’t reconnect, which I’m guessing is a timeout issue with Google, although I really have no idea.

I don’t ever have to manage downloads of this size, so sorry if it’s an obvious question

gedaliyah OP ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Looked promising until

When Images are downloaded this strips EXIF location (according to the docs and my tests). This is a limitation of the Google Photos API and is covered by bug .

The current google API does not allow photos to be downloaded at original resolution. This is very important if you are, for example, relying on “Google Photos” as a backup of your photos. You will not be able to use rclone to redownload original images. You could use ‘google takeout’ to recover the original photos as a last resort

gedaliyah OP ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Well then read it “shitty rural internet.” Use context clues.

gedaliyah OP ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

I used it for my music collection not that long ago and had no issues. The family’s photo library is an order of magnitude larger, so is putting me up against some of the limitations I didn’t run into before

gedaliyah OP ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

The part that is Google’s fault is that they limit the number of download attempts and the files expire after 1 week. That should be clear form the post.

gedaliyah OP ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

It’s not the speed - it’s the interruptions. If I could guarantee an uninterrupted download for 12 hours, then I could do it over the course of 3-4 days. I’m looking into some of the download management tools that people here have suggested.

gedaliyah OP ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

It could absolutely be worse. The main problem is the lack of flexibility - If I could ask for an extension after downloading 80% of the files over a week, that would be helpful for example. I’m also beginning to suspect that they cap the download speed because I am seeing similar speeds on my home and work network…

gedaliyah OP ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Great, any suggestions?

gedaliyah OP ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

This route may be the answer. I didn’t have success so far in setting up a download manager that offered any real improvements over the browser. I wanted to avoid my photos being on two corporate services, but as you say, in theory everything is delete-able.

gedaliyah OP ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Thanks, I’ll give it a shot. The download links are a little weird due to the google authentication, so they can only be used from a logged in account.

gedaliyah OP ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, that introduces an issue of queuing and monitoring dozens of downloads rather than just a few. I had similar results.

As my family is continuing to add photos over the week, I see no way to verify that previously downloaded parts are identical to the same parts in another takeout. If that makes sense.

gedaliyah OP ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

I couldn’t get it working, but I didn’t try too hard. I may give it another shot. I’m trying a different approach right now.

gedaliyah OP ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

DownloadThemAll seems to be helping. I’ll update the original post with the details once I have success. In this case, I was able to first download them internally in the browser, then copy the download link and add them to DtA using the link. Someone smarter than me will be able to explain why the extra step was necessary, or how to avoid it.
