Maybe boomers will finally stop blocking the healthcare reforms that they will desperately need. If they can turn off TV news long enough to see their own problems instead of the made-up problems they are trained to focus on.

Ohio woman who miscarried at home won't be charged with corpse abuse, grand jury decides (apnews.com)

The Trumbull County prosecutor’s office said grand jurors declined to return an indictment for abuse of a corpse against Brittany Watts, 34, of Warren, resolving a case that had sparked national attention for its implications for pregnant women as states across the country hash out new laws governing reproductive health care...

Yes, there has long been a rift among followers of Chabad Judaism (a small but highly-visible sect of Judaism). Some believe that the last rebbe (leader of the sect) did not really die, but is continuing his sacred messianic work on another plane of existence. Others believe that he was not the messiah, but was merely his generation’s “candidate” for messiah, but the world was not ready. They believe that there is a possible messiah in every generation, and when the world is ready he will be revealed. The two groups refuse to discuss this rift for fear that it will tarnish his legacy.

In reality, he was just a very nice man with an incredible gift for marketing.

Substack removes multiple newsletters including pro-Nazi content amid growing pressure (www.cnn.com)

Although the platform has explicit guidelines banning content that incites violence, a November article in The Atlantic pointed out at least 16 different newsletters with Nazi symbols, as well as many more supporting far-right extremism, leading to calls for change from many Substack authors and a refusal from leadership.

@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

After Casey Newton, founder of Substack tech news publication Platformer, flagged a list of publications violating content guidelines to the company, Substack says it is removing five.

None of the nixed newsletters have paid subscribers and, in total, account for about 100 active readers, according to the company.

Still seems low. Imagine someone who said, “just sign here. If you make it through the next 44 years without leaving this cell, you’ll win $25 million.” Would anyone take that deal? A settlement is supposed to make a person “whole.”

Italy urged to cancel pro-Russian events accused of spreading propaganda (www.theguardian.com)

Over time we’ve poured more and more refuse into this vast digital landfill we call the internet. It now vastly outnumbers and outweighs the things that are fresh and untainted and unused.

When everything around us is cultural trash, trash becomes the new medium, the lingua franca of the digital age.

And you can build culture out of trash, but only trash culture: B-games, B-movies, B-music, B-philosophy.

Or maybe it’s because the Israelis, Thais, French, etc., were kidnapped from their homes for the express purpose of wartime negotiation, i.e. hostages. The Palestinians are all held in connection with crimes, including convictions for violent crimes.

If anything, this has exposed major injustices in the Israeli criminal system, such as people being held for long periods of time without charges, unrealistically high conviction rates, etc.

However, let’s also not buy into the Hamas line that the two groups are equivalent. That’s just an attempt to whitewash their Oct 7 atrocities.

One helpful tip if you want to keep the phone logged out. You will not be able to install apps from the Google store (a privacy nightmare anyway). You of course will want to use as many FOSS apps as you can through F-Droid (or Obtainium, etc). But you may also need to occasionally use nonfree apps. Aurora Store is an excellent front-end for Play Store, available (of course) from F-Droid.

He also tells jokes that are offensive to Jews and black people. Yes, it’s his brand, but it’s a horrible brand. He continues to double down on his shock comedy and he doesn’t care who he hurts. Trans people are being murdered because of who they are, and when a public figure publicly spreads hatred against them it adds gasoline to that fire and makes the world less safe for people who are trans.

I don’t really care if a comedian is offensive, but in this case it’s actually dangerous.

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

I am so sick of his comedy of grievance. Every act he does over the past few years is about how unfair the world is to him and how people don’t acknowledge how great he is.

He’s riding out the glory of an okay sketch show that he made two seasons and then torpedoed 20 years ago.

Chappelle has said that Key and Peele were just doing “his show.” But look at how Jordan Peele has reinvented himself as one of the iconic horror film directors of our generation (and maybe all time?). He wouldn’t be out of place in a list alongside Alfred Hitchcock, Eli Roth, M. Night Shyamalan, Clive Barker, or George A. Romero.

Harshly criticizing a powerful group or system (punching up) is considered fair social critique. Harshly criticizing a group or system that is already vulnerable (punching down) is just bullying. It’s not about feeling superior in this context, it’s just about someone with a huge platform using it to put down people who already have a harder life than they need to.

At Least 140 Villagers Killed by Suspected Herders in Nigeria (time.com)

Well shucks, all they did was drive out their most active content makers and cut themselves off from hundreds of thousands of dollars in free moderation labor. Who could possibly have seen this coming?

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Same. It runs so badly now, and enough moderators left or cut back that it is not the same site it was at all. Some communities are still intact, but I’ve begun to see lemmy and even Mastodon results in searches alongside reddit. It’s going to take a while to see if reddit can recover (it’ll take some humility and leadership from the top which seems unlikely) or die slowly then all at once. Remember digg, etc? The internet is fickle and for every Facebook there are a hundred friendsters.

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Some communities were unaffected. Some are still shut down. Some replaced mods who wouldn’t play by spez’s rules.

I’m not sure what the data would look like or how one would obtain it. Number of active moderators per day? Moderator satisfaction survey? Change in posting habits of top 1% posters?

I am speaking purely anecdotally from communities I know that shut down entirely and moderators who left. I have no way to estimate the scale of the exodus.

When times feel dark, I remember the words of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

The arc of the Moral Universe is long, but it bends toward justice.

And also the words of Rabbi Tarfon

It is not upon you to complete the work, but neither are you free to desist from it.

In other words, the world does gradually get better, but you can’t always see it happening because it takes a very long time. That’s why we have to do everything we can today to try to help it along.
