Insofar as viewpoints are represented on a conservative/liberal continuum, yes religious fundamentalism is conservative.

Gosh, it sure would be a shame if this article about confirmed scammer Rajat Khare covering up his scammy ways were shared repeatedly all over the internet. 🤷

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

This is a real nothing of a story. Of course a military doesn’t want people reporting on sensitive intelligence and troop locations during wartime.

Just a reminder to women out there who use a period tracker app, law enforcement already has nearly unfettered access to your monthly cycle data and can use it to track you.

Yes, there is also Drip, and the iPhone health tracker is supposedly local and secure.

More info.

Twitter violated contract by failing to pay millions in bonuses, US judge rules::WASHINGTON — Twitter violated contracts by failing to pay millions of dollars in bonuses that the social media company, now called X Corp, had promised its employees, a federal judge ruled on Friday.

Elon Musk, twirling a comically large disguise mustache: My word, that certainly seems like bad news for whomever owns that detestable “Twitter” company! I, Xelon Mux, would never allow such duplicity at my premiere internet destination, “X.” Muaaahaaahaaa!

Sorry for the mix up. Some people have been mistakenly posting this as evidence that Israel is planning development or settlement in Gaza. Obviously nonsense. Thanks for clarifying.

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

But they’re not. Maybe it’s interesting to you (or others) to speculate about it, but there is no factual plan to construct civilian housing for Israelis in Gaza. This joke ad may be in very bad taste (although I’ve seen far worse on lemmy). But it is obviously not serious. No reasonable person with any basic common sense about marketing, architecture, development, or geopolitics would believe that this is a sincere ad for an authentic development plan.

There wasn’t going to be any air resistance. They were just going to build a vacuum chamber 1000 times larger than the biggest one ever engineered, then contain it in a thin metal tube snaking hundreds of miles across the heat of the California desert. So simple. /s

Imagine a string instead of two magnets. If the hand pulls the string, the car moves. If the string is tied to the car?

“We don’t like or condone bigotry in any form.”

…But we are happy to financially support bigotry and directly profit from it.

Does Mach speed change depending on the altitude?

Since the speed of sound depends on the air, which changes at different altitudes, are “Mach” speeds dependent on the altitude? Or is it basically just like 100 °C is the same even at altitudes where water boils at a lower temperature (in that it is a fixed speed based on the speed of sound at sea level)?

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

It seems like the global consensus is that Al Shifa was not the Hamas nerve center that Israel claimed. I think the really relevant question is whether Israel actually believed that is was and had evidence to support that beleif. A lot of war is about misdirection. Was this Israel’s misdirection or someone else’s?

Kagi seems to be the real deal. I’d say anecdotally it cuts my searches in half (If I had to do 4-6 searches to find something previously, now it’s 2-3 max). Sometimes I will find myself accidently on DDG and I’ll think, “Wow, why are these results all over the place?” DDG still edges out Google and Bing (actually I think it uses Bing as a backend for certain tasks).

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve had a lot of issues with Bing, although it may have improved since I was really using it. AI has a tendency to “hallucinate,” which is a problem if you are interested in results that well… exist.

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Kagi? It’s $5 where I am, or $10 for unlimited searches and AI tools. YMMV

    This seems like a very good thing (although they’ve completely defanged it).

    Am I the only one thinking that this sounds like a very basic function that should have been around for decades now?

    Even at my work we have photos of people who are not allowed in the building. Extremely basic stuff.

    Great! This is very helpful. Glad to see my mastodon is a part of fedipact. I already have meta accounts and I don’t need my fediverse gradually steered towards zuck’s agenda.

    No good billionaires.

    Now to reexamine my lemmy instance. Hmmmm.

    gedaliyah ,
    @gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

    It’s a fair, if extremely naive approach.

    I hear a lot of people in the fediverse suggesting that the exposure will help grow fedi. As though the people who knowingly made social media more dangerous for a buck will suddenly turn over a new leaf.

    Mastodon is more like a garden than a grocery store. If you spend the time to slowly build your network by following interesting people and hashtags, Mastodon can be an amazing experience where you actually have real human interactions.

    It’s not good for viral marketing or mass produced content in my opinion, but if you start by following a few people that boost a lot of other posts, then you’ll find content in time. Every time you see an interesting post, follow that person. If it later turns out that it’s not for you you can unfollow it and it’s not a big deal.

    There are literally published studies that show Twitter has tweaked the algorithm to promote the most vile and extremist right wing media while at the same time cooling the spread of moderate voices.

    Anyone still hanging out at the bar run by Nazis and full of Nazis and funding Nazis is either deluded in thinking that they can change the vibe of the party, or they just plain like the vibe.

    gedaliyah ,

    I would think it’s fine since the new account would be subject to the rules and moderation of the new instance. Sockpuppeting is only if you are doing so for the purpose of misrepresenting your identity or to appear as multiple people (or otherwise using multiple accounts to manipulate or game the platform).

    The technology uses a phone camera to capture an image of someone’s face and calculate their likely age.

    People about to view porn love to have their picture taken and uploaded to a database. I see literally no problems with this whatsoever.

    Doctors With Histories of Big Malpractice Settlements Now Work for Insurers (www.propublica.org)

    Doctors working for health insurers can rule on 10,000 or more requests for care a year. At least a dozen were hired by major insurance companies after being disciplined by state medical boards or making multiple or outsized malpractice payments.

    This seems like the most reasonable (and ethical) reason for the decision. Someone else mentioned ToS, which might be a stronger (but not necessarily ethical) reason. I would think that if it is not a result of the Terms, problems with embedding strongly outweigh the benefits. If it’s just about the Terms, I’d think a good journalist should quote the text in the article (same as reporting on any public statement), then hyperlink the site.

    That would fully be compatible with device and accessibility settings, and provide the same verification as the embedded X. It would be better for journalism because editing could happen from the X side in the future, including removal, which is already possible. It would be better for privacy, web integrity, etc.

    It’s probably easier to do too.

    gedaliyah ,
    @gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

    That only makes it more confusing. There’s nothing in the Reuters article that even suggests Israel had anything to do with that footage.

    If I’m understanding it correctly, the original posted article is suggesting that Israel was desperate to cover up something that turned out to be exactly what they said it was. And the evidence is a fake video someone posted that has nothing to do with Israel.

    What?
