Why are there so many conspiracy theories regarding soy beans?

Dear lemmy, someone very close to my heart is starting to fall into conspiracy theories. It’s heartbreaking. Among other things, he has now told me that soy beans are not supposed to be consumed by human beings and is convinced that despite the literal centuries of human soy bean cultivation and consumption, we shouldn’t eat...

csolisr ,

While I’m not entirely sure about this reasoning, it might be related to the status of soy as a meat and milk substitute. Omnivores claiming that “soy is not meant for human consumption in the same way that milk and meat are” must have eventually been shortened along the way as “soy is not meant for human consumption”.

It can be both at the same time - getting a professional voice actor to translate the script, then apply AI magic to have the voices match the original as exactly as possible.

New study uncovers a “vicious cycle” between feeling less socially connected and increased smartphone use::Using smartphones for extended periods could negatively impact mental well-being and social connectedness, according to a recent study from researchers at the University of British Columbia and a media lab in Germany....

Story of my life. I’m currently on the stage where I will mindlessly post a hot take that I think everyone will agree to, get downvoted to oblivion, and feel even more alone

csolisr ,

I wonder how accurate would it be to do this setup using Dolphin and four instances of mGBA instead of original hardware.

Or basically anyone from the Mexican North. To the point where “norteño” is almost a synonym with “cousin-kisser”.

As somebody who’s been boycotting big media for years, I can’t be happier to see the copyright industry slowly backstabbing itself once and over again

A potential workaround: quote-repost your blog post via Akkoma or Firefish, mention the community you want to post the blog post on, and add the title on the beginning

The Maintainer Of The NVIDIA Open-Source "Nouveau" Linux Kernel Driver Resigns (www.phoronix.com)

Ben Skeggs at Red Hat has long been the primary Nouveau DRM kernel driver maintainer for keeping this open-source NVIDIA GPU kernel driver within the mainline kernel going… Throughout all the battles, particularly after the GTX 900 series and later has required signed firmware images for enabling any accelerated GPU support,...

Or buy a motherboard with dual slots and install one of each, hopefully you’re made of money

csolisr ,

Great to know, but unfortunately CUDA is still too entrenched in comparison to OpenCL - hopefully there’s some way to convert from one to the other.

csolisr ,

It better be, because I’m tired of having so many games running like molasses on the baseline Switch - it’s literally just an overclocked, slightly improved Ouya in the inside, and it shows

csolisr ,

So, has somebody managed to mod the missing Spider-Man missions into the PC version of the game?

Hyprland is a toxic community (drewdevault.com)

Hyprland is an open source Wayland compositor based on wlroots, a project I started back in 2017 to make it easier to build good Wayland compositors. It’s a project which is loved by its users for its emphasis on customization and “eye candy” – beautiful graphics and animations, each configuration tailored to the unique...

Correction: sounds like a great reason for the users to move to a different project and abandon that codebase entirely

Do you pirate? And do you justify pirating? i.e., what is your piracy philosophy?

Well, my friend, he’s kinda poor he can’t afford some books and some streaming services, so he pirates. He pirate books, audiobook and videos and other stuff. Sometimes he buys books he likes a lot out of loyalty to the author (yeah, I don’t understand it either), he likes to read physical books, but yeah, if he hates the...

csolisr ,

Personally, I’ve been boycotting plenty of things during the years because of the crusade against piracy. If Big Media is spending so much effort into ensuring that people that can’t pay don’t have access to their works, then fine, I’ll boycott those works just to prove their actual point - that what they want is to earn more money, not to have their artwork locked in a box due to lack of buyers.

Don’t try to update the BIOS of a generic x86 mini-server if the manufacturer does not offer it on its website. I didn’t learn the lesson the first time but I certainly did the second one. $200-ish down the drain that way

If I ever find someone with enough hardware and electronics knowledge to revive those two boards (in Central America I should add), I’d just give them up for free for all I care.

My only complaint is that each individual blog administrator must learn about this addon and enable it. So subscribing to a given blog in the hopes of having AP support is literally trial and error.

Here’s the problem: for the average consumer, more than five minutes of exercise in a bicycle is apparently excruciatingly painful.

csolisr ,

I still keep my 3DS around, hoping to see an updated version of that concept in a moderately popular smartphone.

Rick Astley. I never really got the point of people getting mad at Never Gonna Give You Up, if anything getting rickrolled is a nice surprise to me.

No lies detected there!

Knowing Apple, they must have thought about a way to make old polishing cloths specifically incompatible with their newer screens.

Imagine if the players actually follow suit and the result is a country like, say, Nigeria becoming a superpower in rugby in a few decades

A jock is fine, but a good team needs about twenty good ones, and that’s what will take time to find.

Been boycotting the media for about a decade. It frankly makes it difficult to make small talk when you refuse to know about the latest trends that Big Media sells to the populace

Just the water I need after I FLOSS my teeth!

My setup is similar, but what I have is one UPS for the things that shouldn’t go down in case of power outage (the modem and server) and another for everything else in my room that can go down for a while without much loss (the computer, consoles, screen, etcetera)

And this is where I wonder, how long until Matrix servers preemptively defederate from WhatsApp?

I wonder if they’re moving to KBin or even Mastodon instead, and that explains the dip in Lemmy specifically.

The fact that the entertainment industry has weaned entire generations with a way to access popular works, or events such as sports and concerts - and then started to privatize them, first with cable, then with subscription services, and each of them with higher costs and more draconian controls than the last. It feels as if the concept of “popular culture” was manufactured to hook us into paying larger amounts of money to the entertainment industry.

csolisr ,

It is, but the big reveal usually happens in the middle of a passionate kiss. Hence the deadly shock. Though I’d like to see the Cegua foiled by a dedicated furry

Checking this thread, I’m more convinced that I missed the train by a long shot. I’m about to be 33 and due to several circumstances, I haven’t been able to date at all, or have any friends to begin with. Given the rule of half plus seven, finding a woman age 23 or higher with the same (lack of) romantic history is basically impossible.

csolisr ,

As of me, I don’t feel as comfortable. I’d rather stay alone than having to somehow compensate for all the experience that I don’t have and will certainly be compared to and found lacking. I can’t imagine a person comparing me with her ex and saying “yeah, I can settle for him”

csolisr ,

Eh, personally I’m a bit too jaded by rejection, not romantically, but from potential friends turned bullies. So I have no intention of pursuing anything romantic unless I’m 110% sure that the relationship will work for me.

csolisr ,

Welp, there lies part of the problem - I don’t think I offer much in the way of anything, and in fact I have more needs than what I can offer back. Which is precisely why I don’t have any friends either.

The latest advancement in hacking involves a preciously hacked console, plus the ability to play Mario Kart 7 with a single cartridge through Download Play. That way you can basically stream a payload to another console to hack it

Nebraska governor signs executive order defining men as "bigger, stronger and faster" (boingboing.net)

Nebraska governor Jim Pillen, a Republican not noted as a women’s rights supporter, yesterday issued an executive order “defining” males and females and the attributes thereof. The anti-transgender political grandstanding offers fusty explanations of the sexes–men are “bigger, stronger and faster” on average–in...

I thought you were gonna talk about Grant Kirkhope’s magnum opus, the DK Rap. You know, because of the “He’s bigger, and faster, and stronger too, he’s the first member of the DK Crew! Huh!”

Do you need to own a 24/7 online server separate from your main PC to create an instance?

I’ve heard a few people on here are starting their own personal instances so they can federate independently with different instances without relying on a larger, third-party instance. If I wanted to do this, would I need to own an actual server, separate from my PC?

csolisr ,

If you want to make it the easy way, yes. If you can handle using Linux as your sole daily driver system (or can manage to configure a virtual machine to run on boot over Windows while opening all the required ports in both Windows and the VM): not necessarily
