It depends on how privacy-conscious does Automattic (the current owners of Tumblr and Wordpress) decide to make Tumblr. If they actually make good in their offer to open-source Tumblr though, you can expect people to federate with no issues with both Tumblr and other “Tumblr nodes” as well.

CR user here. One time we were taking some items out of my house in order to have them recycled for parts. I was taking out an old washing machine we had replaced some time ago, needing some major fixes to go back to usability… it had already been taken away by someone in the five minutes it took me to return back to the front of my house with another batch of things, and I couldn’t help to chuckle at the speed in which things got recycled in my neighborhood

Well, time to capitulate to Big Energy

csolisr ,

I’m impressed with what developers could do with what amounted to an electrical typewriter on a budget (down to the color limitations being based on the device being text-first). Kind of what happens when a cheap, mass-produced, simplified version of a technology finally lands in the hands of a lot of people. A bit sad that nothing of the sort seemed to happen with the Raspberry Pi…

Anyone else here staying away of Sonic Superstars because of this?

My Experience Switching From NVIDIA To AMD (lemmy.world)

TLDR: From my experience, in 2023, the Mesa drivers with an AMD GPU provide an experience that is way better than NVIDIA with their proprietary drivers. And if you’re helping a friend get into linux, and or linux gaming I think you should steer them towards an AMD GPU....

csolisr ,

And to think that if you want to use fully free software in your stack a la FSF, the answer is more like “my friendship ended with external GPUs, now the iGPU of a Librebooted Intel from ten years ago is my only friend left”

csolisr ,

My old person trait is that when I purchase a printer, I should be able to use whatever is the cheapest compatible ink without the printer treating me like I’m smuggling unicorn blood out of Narnia

If you host a feed reader (or just use one a lot), Morss is amazing (morss.it)

Got the suggestion from a comment yesterday (I’ll link when I find it) and I’d been using FreshRSS on it’s own for a long time. Morss is a godsend for feeds that like to give you only the headline. It’s also especially awesome for the Hackernews and Lobsters feeds because it will expand the posted links for you which I...

csolisr ,

Hopefully it also works with comics sites such as Webtoons and Tapas. Those are infamous for their complex JavaScript methods to foil even Readability plugins in readers such as TTRSS.

csolisr ,

Because I was unaware of FMD2 - do you have a link?

What exactly are the differences between Mastodon and Misskey?

Exploring the fediverse has been fun, but I’m still trying to figure out things. I have a mastodon account, but also decided to check out other fediverse projects and came across misskey. Made an account or miruku.cafe, and it seems quite similar to mastodon to me. Are they very similar?

csolisr ,

I’m currently using Akkoma, but I intend to switch to Calckey as soon as it has a stable way of transferring my posts.

Is Mr Beast a good person?

I know this is going to sound like some clickbait bullshit title, but I’m genuinely curious, asking in good faith. My two oldest sons are enamored with him, and he seems like a genuine guy, so I’m asking - is he a nice guy? If you google the question, you get a bunch of reddit hate, which I don’t always trust,...

csolisr ,

Conservatives complaining about them, that’s who

csolisr ,

Not gonna lie, the article is right in the sense that the Fediverse is still rough on the edges. Hopefully the fact that everyone and their parents had to move out of most social media will make organizations reconsider investing government money into making them better.

csolisr ,

If that means a way to view Instagram accounts without actually having an Instagram myself: I might give it a spin from my instance. I totally understand the admins burning the bridge before it’s even built, though.

csolisr ,

From what I gather, Twitter uses Google as its Simple Storage Service (S3), which is one of the main reasons why them dine-and-dashing Alphabet Inc. with the bill for server usage was so severe for their backend

csolisr ,

Unfortunately, the places where you can go are an ever-decreasing list. Some Nordic countries, a few EU ones, that’s about it. Fascism is growing into a majority in literally the rest of the world.

csolisr ,

Hello to the Fediverse! Hopefully you can also enjoy the rest of the sites such as Kbin, Pixelfed, Peertube, Owncast and Misskey - there’s plenty to choose from!

csolisr ,

That’s because you haven’t found The Good Ones ™ such as TILVids

csolisr ,

Lists are your friend! Not sure if Mastodon can do it, but on Pleroma/Akkoma you can add users to a list without adding them to your main followed list.

csolisr ,

Just be mindful that Owncast does not integrate VOD storage, it’s up to each user to record and upload VODs elsewhere after the stream is over.

csolisr ,

Wondering if this will see the same backlash that Mastodon had when users were planning to add a search engine - many users moved to Mastodon specifically because their posts are unsearchable by default, and that prevents some dogpiling that was common on Twitter.

csolisr ,

Consent is important in the Fediverse. Scraping user content without their consent and posting it elsewhere is generally viewed as a big no-no.

csolisr ,

That’s their way of advertising the game as “starting at 59.99” but the game then coerces you into spending an extra sixty dollars for the privilege of actually playing the whole game.

If everyone moved to open source non-profit solutions, the tech industry would lose billions

I’m a FOSS (free and open source software) contributor and enthusiast. So I prefer to use such products (Lemmy instead of Reddit, Linux instead of Windows, Firefox instead of Chrome, Signal instead of WhatsApp, you get the idea). Was just thinking that if everyone moved to such solutions, the tech and ad industry would lose...

csolisr ,

The biggest problem is, nobody from the tech industry is going to fund an application specifically designed to be non-commercial unless they’re legally forced to. Which means that reach and development power are always going to stay behind the proprietary alternatives

lemmy.world doesn't seem to have many established NSFW communities; they appear to be in separate instances. Is there any benefit to this or anything stopping lemmy.world from having NSFW communities?

This may be more of an “out of the loop” thing, but I’m new to this site and I’m noticing that lemmy.world seems surprisingly bereft of any substantial NSFW content. I’m surprised! Isn’t the adage that porn motivates technological progress?...

csolisr ,

From what I gather, the existence of a dedicated NSFW-friendly instance has made most such posters gravitate towards that particular place, as they may or may not be banned or defederated from other instances if they set shop in another server.

csolisr ,

Fun fact: base 60 was adopted by the Babylonians for two major reasons:

  • It splits evenly in common fractions, such as halves, thirds, quarters, fifths, sixths…
  • The Babylonians used a finger-counting method where the left thumb scrolled across each phalanx of the finger (giving a core base 12) and each of the other left fingers was used to keep track of how many rounds of twelve had been counted (hence 12 times 5 = 60)
csolisr ,

Back in the day, sure - nowadays they’re removed only if they have no mobility or otherwise cause discomfort to the wielder.

csolisr ,

I certainly see the blue, but where’s the pink exactly? The mouth maybe? Feels like a bit of a stretch

csolisr ,

And don’t forget “gigantic honeypot disguised as a way to meet your old classmates”

csolisr ,

Furthermore, he doesn’t use Mastodon exactly, but Akkoma (which is mostly compatible with Mastodon clients while being much lighter)
