Sweden is not like Finland where NATO has had an 80% support since Russia started their war against Ukraine. For understandable reasons – mainland swedes have pretty much never been at risk from Russia whereas Finland has no risks except Russia.

But I think still a good 60% support NATO, right?

fosforus ,

It’s so sus that our own defence has been dismantled for 20 years

Yeah that was a big fucking mistake.

fosforus ,

More like Finland told you to join and you obeyed.

fosforus ,

If someone is confused: NPD are actual unashamed nazis. Nobody likes them in Germany.

AfD are populist alt-right creeps, but they are enjoying a >20% support in Germany. I find it unlikely that their funding will be affected.

21 Israeli soldiers are killed in the deadliest single attack on the army since the war began (apnews.com)

On Monday, Israeli reservists were preparing explosives to demolish two buildings in central Gaza on when a militant fired a rocket-propelled grenade at a tank nearby. The blast triggered the explosives, causing both two-story buildings to collapse on the soldiers inside.

fosforus ,

Why is there no kind of information on how many Hamas operatives have been killed in this war? Is this because there’s no way to tell them from civilians? Does Hamas itself even know?

fosforus ,

But … they cannot just withdraw that money after they gave it to charity, right? The money isn’t theirs anymore.

fosforus ,

Autogynephilia might not be the most healthy mental state, tbh. But as long as it doesn’t hurt anybody, y’all do you.

fosforus ,

Why would Belarus, a Russian vassal, co-operate with NATO? This doesn’t make any sense. Are they claiming an actual change in politics and an attempt to get away from Russian influence?

I’m now freelance musician and teacher and I’m on track to make more than any employer paid me.

That’s great! Is there some part of this that you think doesn’t fit into free market capitalism? Seems like you’re living the original american dream there.

fosforus ,

Clearly more than the average, but not “most”. Last I remember the figure was something like 12%.

In a small company it sure makes a difference if your senior management are sociopaths, but if the company is large enough that you’ll never see the CEO I’m not sure what difference does it make that he doesn’t care about you personally.

fosforus ,

Everyone should prioritize life over work.

I agree. But also: nobody should expect others to carry them. You have to balance these two things in your life.

Since many people here are American, I feel like I need to clarify a bit. I live in a country where almost nobody works over 7,5h per day. And when they do, every hour is compensated for, sometimes with 150%/200% surcharge. I find it extremely weird that some people in a 1st world country work overtime for free, or generally speaking “work” over 8 hours per day in intellectual work on a regular basis.

I see my whole generation being burnt out of this however.

I see that happening too, but at the same time I’m also witnessing their workload and demands on them being smaller than what it used to be (already at school), and their work conditions being greatly improved compared to previous times. There’s clearly a systemic problem somewhere, as I don’t think whole generations can suddenly be simply worse than previous ones, but at the same time it’s crystal clear that the problem is not “too much work”.

Jonathan Haidt has written about this a few times before[0], and his latest book[1] is coming in a few months. Should be interesting.

Millennials are some of the first to have to be “always on” with constant emails, and Slack, and companies monitoring their every move on their phones and laptops,

I totally agree. And in addition to “having to be” always on, we very often also choose to be always on. This is one of the biggest problems of our generation, I think, and I’m not seeing any attempts at fixing it. If anything, we’re trying to make it worse.

fosforus , (edited )

His ideas don’t look plausible to me at all. It sounds like he just wants attention.

Perhaps read the book first? I’m sure it’s available from piracy sites if you don’t want him to have your money. Ignoring a thing you disagree with initially is a great way to never improve intellectually.

Netanyahu defies Biden, insisting there’s ‘no space’ for Palestinian state (www.theguardian.com)

Defiant Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu doubled down on opposition to Palestinian statehood, deepening the divide with Israel’s closest international allies, as cracks in his wartime “unity” government became increasingly evident....

fosforus ,

It has been an incredibly successful strategic move. For the last 80 years, Near East has been directing their power struggles mostly inwards instead of towards Europe – like they often did before WW1. Given how Russia is being offensive against Europe, this would be a horrible time for Europe if Israel would fall.

fosforus ,

I think the calculation is pretty mathematical here. It just makes incredibly good geopolitical sense to have Israel in there, sapping the strength of all its neighbors.

fosforus ,

A communist calling someone an idiot is the absolute unit of irony. Even if it’s Piers fucking Morgan.

fosforus ,

I watched the first generation that got personal unrestricted mobile phones for themselves. Somehow I thought it was a good idea at the time. It fucked them up mentally, and then Covid-19 came and doubled the effect.

Now I think that a parent who gets their under 12 year old kid a smart phone should be treated roughly in the same way as if the parent gave the kid cocaine.

There are a few things to consider.

  1. She’s just 8, so you have an easier time controlling what she does (I say this with the experience of rising 2 children to adulthood)
  2. She might not be susceptible to these things
  3. You just might be a better parent for any arbitrary reason

So as an anecdote your situation is valuable, but as a guideline to how the whole society should handle this problem possibly not so much.

Tesla charging stations become ‘car graveyards’ as batteries die in subzero temperatures, abandoned cars left in the lot after cars wouldn’t charge (www.kansascity.com)

Tesla charging stations become ‘car graveyards’ as batteries die in subzero temperatures, abandoned cars left in the lot after cars wouldn’t charge::undefined

fosforus ,

I was initially confused but after remembering how Americans cannot science and 0F =~ -18C this made a bit more sense.

My Tesla worked fine through several days of -35C though, but the battery efficiency was a bit shit. I think I spent something like 6-8% just to get the cabin warm, but starting the car or driving generally speaking was never a problem.

fosforus ,

Ooh, ok. That makes quite a lot of sense. Especially if one uses the miles/km number to show battery state, people are gonna get screwed by the cold. I changed that thing to percentages pretty soon after I got the car.

I honestly don’t understand why people are buying EVs if they don’t have the option of home charging.

Yeah, that doesn’t make much sense.

fosforus ,

Ok, sorry for leaving them out. Americans and Brits cannot science.

fosforus , (edited )

Do you really have nothing of genuine merit to be proud of? All you have is your thermostat?

No, that’s it. That’s my whole identity and existence. Spring is coming, send help.

I find comments like this a bit weird. I first got into lemmy about 2 years ago, and back then lemmy.ml was full of toxic leftism. It still is, but at least now there is more federation so it’s easier to ignore all that without losing all comments.

Overall, toxicity rises with popularity. It’s just impossible to gain a lot of users without some of them disagreeing with you. And social media is designed to increase friction, so things get toxic. Even if Lemmy isn’t making money from that friction like something like Reddit is, it’s still using the exact same design.

fosforus ,

Holy shit.

“Work reform” my ass. It’s just a facade for full-blown communist revolution, which in my humble opinion is just a facade for “let’s break everything and replace it with something worse”.

fosforus ,

Personally, I want war more than I want to be subjugated by Russia. This is currently a very realistic threat for me, probably surpassing almost every other non-medical threat.

fosforus ,

From the River to the Sea, Israel will be free.

fosforus ,

Perhaps jail… or I mean if we’re brainstorming… perhaps capture him and remove all his nails with pliers.

fosforus ,

Sure. How do you prove that what IDF is doing is collective punishment instead of warfare against terrorists?

fosforus ,

That’s a pretty big if. How could they do such a thing without local support?

fosforus ,

The IDF is obviously and openly conducting collective punishment on all of Gaza ostensibly as a means of fighting terrorists.

How do you claim to “obviously” know that?

fosforus , (edited )

“women and menstruating people”

Might be interesting to see the reaction of a gazan doctor when somebody says this phrase to him.

fosforus ,

By having literally any awareness of reality?

You wouldn’t believe the sort of things I’ve heard being justified by starting a claim with “if you don’t see this you must be an idiot”. But it’s still not proof or even evidence of any kind.

fosforus , (edited )

obvious

You keep using that word. I don’t think it means what you think it means.

Additionally no Israel leader has explained what happens after they destroy Hamas.

Not quite true (but this is a pretty fresh statement, so your view is understandable):

…aawsat.com/…/4798646-netanyahu-israel-has-destro…

“In any future arrangement … Israel needs security control all territory west of the Jordan,” Netanyahu said. “This collides with the idea of sovereignty. What can you do?”

If Netanyahu gets to keep his head (politically), it looks like Gaza strip will be controlled by Israel and Palestine will not exist. It’s not at all necessary that he will, though – he’s currently very unpopular in Israel. Then again, if he gets to claim victory, that might change.

I wish it was possible for Hamas to be unpopular in Palestine. How great would that be.

fosforus ,

They want to control everything

Probably, or at least security.

and kick out all the Palestinians.

That remains to be seen, I guess.

fosforus ,

I don’t claim to know, but clearly it has worked a couple of times in recent history. WW2 ended with Germany, Italy and Japan being totally defeated and conquered by Allied forces. And they mostly left in just a few years. I’m guessing what it takes is that the population needs to understand they lost.

fosforus ,

If I order your whole block to evacuate their homes because I want to blow up a meth lab 3 doors down from you, I am engaging in collective punishment. It’s literally what words mean.

What you describe is an active attempt to protect innocent lives from a violent operation. It’s the opposite of punishment.

fosforus ,

What do you think Israel should do to Gaza in the current situation where the ruling party of Gaza does not recognize the legitimacy of Israel’s existence? I mean Israel has been doing what it has been doing in Gaza for a pretty damned good reason, and if Hamas (the ruling party of Gaza) would unlodge their heads from their behinds, things could actually improve.

fosforus ,

IDF is fighting against an entity who denies the existence of Israel. Hamas could take the first step towards peace and accept Israel.

fosforus ,

No, just morbidly funny.

fosforus ,

And that’s not how any of this works at all. Zero-sum game this is not.

fosforus ,

Ok, so … Biden’s economic policies are worse than Trump’s were?

Or perhaps a tiny thing called war in Europe and worst pandemic in a century is having some teeny tiny effects in world economy. But when you detect a fire inside your house, it’s often smarter to use a fire extinguisher to douse it, not gasoline.
