They don’t have to tell you the truth. It could have been to test whether being told that it’s “men vs women” affects the readings test subjects provide

joel ,

Yeah same, its been almost 10 years for me. I briefly tried other options like brave, but kept coming back to Firefox

joel ,

I’ll take her, it’s freezing cold where I live now

Is "food" a social construct?

Hear me out. There’s nothing innate to an object that makes it “food”. It’s an attribute we give to certain things that meet certain qualities, i.e. being digestible, nutritious, perhaps tasty or satisfying in some way, etc. We could really ingest just about anything, but we call the stuff that’s edible “food”....

joel ,

Food is a non-toxic, organic substance that provides nutrition in the form of carbohydrates, protein, fibre, fats/oils, and/or vitamins and minerals. Sure there are some edge cases which you can argue the point in, such as a lump of rock salt maybe, but for the most part it is something which provides sustenance. Sure you could eat mud or plaster and it won’t kill you, but it won’t help keep you alive either, so its not food.

joel ,

I agree that the pile-on wasn’t necessary, people tend to just give their kneejerk response and then move on. Having said that, you probably could have explained your case a bit better too in the original post.

joel ,

I’m with you bro, although we don’t need to mine the moon or asteroids, the tunnels can be airtight enough with reinforced concrete. They’ve already made multiple sustainable concrete formulas, and I think 150 years is plenty of time to assume these will be mass adopted. If fusion has becomea thing and we have an abundance of energy then the costs of such an enormous project will also become more feasible.

I used i3 for a couple of years, but I missed the ease of having a DE that just recognised USB sticks and external hard drives, and all the other little things that you have to set up manually

joel ,

I used wind scribe for a few years for torrenting on my phone andpc and never had any trouble. Once I forgot to turn on the vpn while downloading a movie on my phone at work (using the companywifi 🤦) and got an email from IT saying they’d gotten a warning and not to do it again 🤣😬

They do have a firewall option to prevent scenarios like that

Nobody is talking about marxists or leftists here, tankies are a breed of their own

I had a friend like that too, he was Sri Lankan and took offense that he was somehow not included in the blanket term of Asian. I’ve since learnt it’s possible to be more specific and say South Asian for countries such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka etc, and south-east Asian for countries like Thailand, Korea, Indonesia, Philippines etc

joel ,

My first impression was that they were Korean

joel ,

Yes exactly! Linux has its pitfalls, but the pitfalls of Linux are far more tolerable for me than the shortcomings of windows.

Macs I can’t speak for because I’ve never tried, but they seem overpriced

joel ,

Preach!

joel ,

Maybe you should read the manual on how to reply to a Lemmy comment

joel ,

I started using Usenet about a year ago and much prefer it. Once you have you it set up it’s very straight forward to use, and means you don’t have to worry about maintaining your ratio, or making sure your vpn doesn’t drop out, or piratebay going down etc etc

joel ,

When I discovered soulseek and could stop paying $20-$30 per CD. Incidentally, I bought an iPod round the same time and couldn’t copy my mp3s over, and that’s the last time i ever bought an apple product

joel ,

Ironically I’ve tried installing Ubuntu a couple of times in the past, but for whatever reason it didn’t work. I’m currently using Debian instead just because the install worked. No idea why, maybe my laptop is just weird.

I used Arch for years because I wanted to learn more about how linux works and it was a good way to push myself. I think it worked because I am better at problem solving now - I even read the error messages lol

joel ,

For some reason New Guinea is included with Australia, even though the western half is owned by Indonesia, and the eastern half is its own country. Either way with the civil war going on there at the moment I’d much rather be living in Australia!

joel ,

Umm I don’t think New Guinea is part of the Australian continent. I live in Australia and they definitely didn’t teach us that in school

What're some of the dumbest things you've done to yourself in Linux?

I’m working on a some materials for a class wherein I’ll be teaching some young, wide-eyed Windows nerds about Linux and we’re including a section we’re calling “foot guns”. Basically it’s ways you might shoot yourself in the foot while meddling with your newfound Linux powers....

joel ,

Yeah I don’t see the problem here

joel ,

I’ve been using nothing but Linux for 5 years and I still have problems every now and then.

joel ,

My laptop is 6 years old and has been running arch Linux with xfce for most of that time. I got tired of maintaining it and changed to an “easy” Linux mint distro. It takes much longer to boot up now and feels generally sluggish in comparison to a minimal arch install. So from experience, in older hardware having a bloated distro can really slow down your system.

joel ,

Without knowing the real reasons behind it, it’s very difficult to hold an opinion on the board’s decisions

joel ,

I’m not gonna say I know much about his history, but I am surprised so many people are jumping to take his side in this debacle. I would’ve thought in this day and age that people would be a bit more sceptical of CEOs.

joel ,

It’s how people have been talking for, like, 20 years now at least

joel ,

I’ve been using the free version of protonmail for years, and I’ve thought about paying but it’s just so expensive! Even with the current deal it’s still €40 a year for the lowest tier, budget email subscription. The next step up is €104. Then after 12 months it goes back to full price.

Convincing myself to pay that for something I’ve never paid for before is a huge ladder to climb for me

joel ,

I think so, I only really looked at the cheapest one

joel ,

Australia

joel ,

Try Usenet, you don’t need to worry about a VPN that way

joel ,

Sahsiyet. It’s like Breaking Bad, but Turkish. Really well produced and binge worthy.

joel ,

Dark was great, it reminded me a bit of Stranger Things in the first season. By the second season you almost need to take notes to keep up with the story line though

joel ,

The premise was foreign tv series, by which I assume means from non- English speaking countries

joel ,

Not sure if that counts. I’m from Australia so technically all US tv series are “foreign” to me.

The AI Politicians Would Like to Speak With You Now - Politicians are using AI doppelgängers to reach voters. It’s a trend that’s about to explode. (gizmodo.com)

Over the last month, some Spanish-speaking New Yorkers got a recorded phone call from Mayor Eric Adams speaking their native language. “Hola, soy el alcalde Eric Adams,” the mayor says in a monotone but flawless accent, before launching into a pitch for jobs with the city government. The truth is Adams isn’t multilingual,...

joel ,

Yeah, that bar isn’t that high really is it. Imagine if they actually kept their word!

joel ,

True but last time the banks stopped caring about them we had the global financial crisis

joel ,

Not to mention how much more cleaning they need compared to, say, the legs and arms.

joel ,

Phones.

Banking apps, podcasts, gps navigation, chatting to friends, listening to music are all awesome.

But then getting stuck doomscrolling and constantly checking my phone trying to eke out a little more stimulation when literally anything else would be a more productive way to spend my day - that part sucks ass.

joel ,

Personally I found being unemployed was way, way worse

joel ,

I’m doomscrolling right now

Has anybody else not seen an ad yet? I’m wondering if it’s because I’m using Enhancer for youtube which also has an adblocking function 🤔

I think the people who evolved in the highest gravity regions would become like supermen and end up ruling the whole world due to their superior strength. If not, it would at least give them a significant advantage while technology is still primitive. How would they defend themselves from attack?

joel ,

Are you assuming there’s the one species who live all over the globe, like humans do? I was coming from the viewpoint that there may be related but divergent species who evolved to different gravity “climates”. I think that might affect the how things turn out to some extent.

Travel around the low gravity areas would be easier, but they would also only be limited to those areas due to piggyback weakness, whereas the people who evolved/grew up in high gravity would be able to travel the earth, so they would be the explorers, merchants and conquerors. Of course as technology advances this will all mean less and less

I can see the low gravity areas becoming prime real estate though, like you said. Talking geologically for a second, my first guess is that these would be higher elevation as the crust isn’t pulled down so much by gravity, and erode slower. Also precious metal deposits might(?) be closer to the surface too. If this is the case then this will give the low G folks to also advance in tech faster with greater access to useful metals. So if they’re quick enough maybe they can defeat the 'heavy’s with ingenuity.

I didn’t really come to a conclusion there did I? I just got more confused the more I thought about geopolitics…

joel ,

I told myself I would never install it until it became the only option for keeping in touch with a girl I like. But hey as long a that’s all I use it for, they can’t glean that much info from me, right? Right?

joel ,

YES! This is my number one pet peeve. I am so fucking tired of having to install an app just to use my new e-scooter, or light bulb, or to use 100 new different functions that would work perfectly well on your website if you weren’t such a fucking money grubbing troglodyte.
