Do you have a ghoti-ing licence for that joke? Wild ghoti must be preserved, you know!

It’s Life by You for those that don’t want to access the link.

Such a shame, I was excited for the game.

As someone who doesn’t know much about China aside from the high competitiveness of their academic environment, I’m curious as to what sort of issues your friends face due to surveillance? Does it affect their day to day lives? Or does it just foster an atmosphere of “be careful what you say”?

LoreleiSankTheShip ,

I would legit use it. For-profit dating sites suck

LoreleiSankTheShip ,

I think non-militarized cops, so most non-American ones, are not that bad and are generally more decent people than militarized cops. It’s amazing how much better policing can be when cops don’t carry guns with them all the time

LoreleiSankTheShip ,

I think many people say stuff like that, and indeed they would for a few months, but after a while people would look for stuff to do, and they tend to turn towards volunteering. That fulfills both daily structure and socialization. Do you think that’s something you would eventually do in that case as well?

Are there any EV cars without any "technology"?

Like the title says, are there any EVs that just have a Bluetooth radio and that’s it? Like a normal car, not a smartphone on wheels? If not, do you all think that this will actually happen at some point? This is the main reason why I can’t (and will never) buy an EV. I like to have actual buttons everywhere on my car. I...

While an amazing option for city commutes, mine is close to 100km daily. I have no idea if it’s possible to use an e-bike for that, but it would certainly take up even more of my limited free time to do so.

LoreleiSankTheShip ,

Yup, it is. Unfortunately, I had to endure that for close to a year (I will be assigned somewhere else this summer) and me and my colleagues had to carpool. Public transport would have been the best, but for that route the bus only goes twice a day.

Nevertheless, e-bikes are great if your commute isn’t that long!

Good luck turning off the corporate AI’s scraping your data from whatever websites you use to profit off of it!

LoreleiSankTheShip ,

It’s 100% happening outside as well though invasive ad placements, restriction of access to pleasant environments and underfunding of public services and property, like parks and such. It just takes much longer

LoreleiSankTheShip ,

The summary for this video hurts my eyes to look at.

LoreleiSankTheShip ,

I don’t know, I have removed close to 80% of ads in my life. None on my pc, none on my phone, none when I listen to music, none when I play games. Adblocking, Linux and a dash of the old yarr matey worked like a charm

LoreleiSankTheShip ,

I’d prefer no implants ever if I can help it. I’d only be fine with one if it saved my life. Otherwise, there are just too many things that can go wrong with it in ways our current technology can’t. You can go off-grid now if you get sick of tech, but that becomes infinitely harder if you have a chip in your brain

LoreleiSankTheShip ,

I’d be pretty interesting to have access to age demographics for social media. I assume Reddit leans younger than Lemmy, but I’m in my early 20s and so are a few of my friends, and we use Lemmy a lot more.

After announcing increased prices, Spotify to Pay Songwriters About $150 Million Less Next Year (www.billboard.com)

When Bloomberg reported that Spotify would be upping the cost of its premium subscription from $9.99 to $10.99, and including 15 hours of audiobooks per month in the U.S., the change sounded like a win for songwriters and publishers. Higher subscription prices typically equate to a bump in U.S. mechanical royalties — but not...

LoreleiSankTheShip ,

If a friend asks me to help with something, I don’t removed and moan about my unpaid labour. Fuck that, they’re my friends and I wouldn’t take the money even if offered. That’s just what friends do. The same applies to if I wanted to do something nice for them, like sending them a cool mixtape I made. That’s how you build communities! Focusing on payment like you do reduces everything to capitalism but with even less empathy and humanity.

LoreleiSankTheShip ,

No, the solution would be for every app to be able to licence the music without any exclusivity, making them compete over the features their apps and services have instead of on the music itself. Video streaming is an oligopoly right now, which can be just as bad as a monopoly.

LoreleiSankTheShip ,

As other people have said, it doesn’t really matter as long as it helps solve climate change. Boo hoo, western corporations didn’t get to overcharge for stuff, big deal.

LoreleiSankTheShip ,

I prefer green tea blends, but I drink black if I need more caffeine. I don’t drink coffee at all, so it’s my main source of it and I drink most teas without anything else. No milk, no sugar, no honey, nothing. To me, sugar in tea just ruins the taste and milk in tea is really weird to my culture’s palette (most people here drink herbal or fruit teas by the way, very few drink green or black)

LoreleiSankTheShip ,

I think that we may simply be among the first civilisations to reach such a technologically advanced point. By the time a species gets tech that can destroy their civilisation, i reckon they would most likely have also made a broadcast of some sort, either through radio or light or whatever else.

Granted, there’s no real way to know any of this, us being the first is just what I reason is the most likely answer.

LoreleiSankTheShip ,

I think that presumes simulating a universe and/or consciousness is even possible. We have no clue either way if it can be done, but we have evidence life exists, at least on Earth, so it is possible for life to exist somewhere else too. I believe aliens are more likely than us living in a simulation

LoreleiSankTheShip ,

I’m not saying we are the absolute first, as in there’s nobody else, I’m merely saying that we could be among the first civilisations ever to exist. To me, it seems a more plausible explanation than civs just going dark. As far as we know, there’s no way to take back a broadcast that has been travelling for centuries, so even if they no longer send anything, what they sent in the past should still be detectable, I think, unless it didn’t have enough time to travel here. In which case, the broadcast has been sent relatively recently (no more than a few millenia ago) or we are very far apart.

When you go to a party and you don’t see anyone else there, you don’t think “Everyone must be hiding”, you think “I must be first”, right?

LoreleiSankTheShip ,

As someone not working in IT and not very knowledgeable on the subject, I’ve had way less issues with Manjaro than with Mint, despite reading everywhere that Mint “just works”. Especially with printers.

LoreleiSankTheShip ,

I’ve been using Discord almost since launch, and in that time, not a single feature did I find as an important addition to the program. It is now much more bloated with unnecessary stuff, stuff for which they paid those talented devs you mention.

I would have been perfectly content with a one-time payment to use it and it would have worked perfectly well for them with that model if they didn’t get greedy and want to stuff it with random junk to justify a subscription.

I don’t mind paying as long as it’s not a subscription scam for no reason at all.

LoreleiSankTheShip ,

Twisted is what made me love musicals. They’re not a big thing in my culture, our theatre is strictly non-musical, and the movie ones seemed weird to me. But after watching Twisted, they all clicked for me. Everyone should give it a watch!

LoreleiSankTheShip ,

Don’t worry, Randy’s going to help you with that sooner or later

LoreleiSankTheShip ,

Think about it this way. As a cop, your job isn’t to help the community or to keep people safe or any of that happy wholesome crap. Your job is to enforce the law. That’s it. It doesn’t matter if the law is unfair or unethical, it’s your job to enforce it. Sure, maybe some people become cops without fully understanding this, but on some level, they must know.

The laws are made by politicians, and I’m certain that no matter your political beliefs, you can agree that most of them are crooked. Ergo, everyone who signs up to enforce their laws is a bastard. If somebody truly wishes to serve the community and save people, they become firefighters instead. It’s almost the same skillset and if you’re willing to become a cop, you shouldn’t be afraid of the danger either.

Why is everything in consumer / American life so fucking shitty now - and companies literally just say 'oh bc profit margins' and we're now expected to swallow that and sympathize?

like I went to taco bell and they didn’t even have napkins out. they had the other stuff just no napkins, I assume because some fucking ghoul noticed people liked taking them for their cars so now we just don’t get napkins! so they can save $100 per quarter rather than provide the barest minimum quality of life features.

LoreleiSankTheShip ,

The Average Joe rarely has enough capital to start a promising enterprise and when they do manage to, they get bought up by the very same corporations they were trying to compete against.

We’ve reached a point where corpos can just buy out the competition and do whatever they please to it.

And it’s not even a greed issue, really. The system is kill or be killed, a corporation that doesn’t do this sort of shady thing won’t make as much money and will be bought out by others that do.

We have to change the rules of the game.

The one thing that got me into home made bread was getting a bread machine and using it exclusively for kneading. Machine made bread is weird and uneven to me, but taking the dough and baking it the traditional way makes brilliant bread and saves a lot of time.

LoreleiSankTheShip ,

I disagree with your take on men being emotionally weaker. It’s merely an excuse to avoid learning emotional intelligence and it’s just a symptom of how they are socialised. Men don’t learn how to properly channel and express their emotions, instead being told to bottle them up or repress themselves from early childhood (stuff like being told “You’re a boy, stop crying” or “Man up and get over it”). It leads to a less empathetic world and makes people insensitive and inconsiderate.

LoreleiSankTheShip ,

Amazingly said!

I’ve yet to find someone else who finds them attractive. Not as weird as some others around here I think, but I find them really hot for some reason.

Whoever chooses which sites get banned from the internet has a whole load of power. They could feasibly, in time, become corrupt and end up banning threats to corporate monopolies, like the Fediverse.

Exactly. So I wouldn’t trust anyone with the power to dictate which websites you can visit and which you can’t

You should research this a bit more because ironically more people get exposed to radiation in the coal industry than in nuclear, percentage wise. Also I live in Eastern Europe and all game is safe to eat.

You’re very fortunate that you can take the time to ignore those politics. For many people, these issues affect them to such an extent that they can’t be ignored at all. As for the amount of memes challenging the status quo here… well… if you’re on Lemmy, the status quo didn’t work for you either.

LoreleiSankTheShip ,

I don’t agree. The simple fact that Lemmy is decentralised is a political thing. It’s about who has power over the platform, and that is inherently a political issue. The status-quo of other platforms, that being under the control of a corporation, is also a political stance.

PS: everything is politics, that’s not a good or bad thing, it’s neutral. If you don’t think of something as political, that just means it’s oriented towards the status-quo you are used to.

LoreleiSankTheShip ,

I dream a lot. In my dreams, older me visits me in a time machine. He doesn’t look like me at all. His time machine has a lot of buttons. I think if you push one a shower or some shampoo or something comes out. I asked older me how it works and he said you could go see dinosaurs or even go back to when cavemen were around. He asked me what I am bad at in school and I said I am bad at math. He told me there was a switch that would make me really good at math. I tried to push it once but he got mad. He said I had to work hard and get better by myself.

That was the only time he got mad at me. After he stopped being mad he was super nice so I was happy. He told me about the girl I was gonna marry. That’s a secret. I asked him about God. He told me God is real. I think He’s real too. My Mom said God is always watching, and He’ll make you go to hell if you do bad things. So I can absolutely never do bad things. I have to be nice to my little sister too. Mom told me God doesn’t watch you do bad things, but that it’s a scary man instead. The scary man is the whose eyes are those eyes monster. He makes you go to hell if he sees you. God’s eyes and whose eyes are those eyes are in the sky, the ceiling, the walls, and there’s a lot of them in my school and they’re watching me no matter what. So I think I have to do a lot of good things like studying and other things because of that. It’s embarrassing though because they watch me even when I do things like go to the toilet or take a bath.

Also, ever since I was little, I could close my eyes and dream sometimes even though I wasn’t sleeping. It was like the inside of my head was like a video game or a manga. But when I do that the whose eyes are those eyes monster comes out so I don’t want to do that. I asked my Mom and she told me not to do it. But while I’m writing this essay I asked older me in my dreams to tell me more about the time machine but he said I knew everything. He wouldn’t tell me more stuff because I’m just a kid. So from now on I want to do lots of good things so I can beat whose eyes are those eyes.

LoreleiSankTheShip ,

Wait, you’re onto something here. If you think about it, our entire society is an mmo. The tryhards optimise the fun out of it for everyone, you have to have a competitive edge over other players to succeed in any workplace, it’s very pay to win and if you’re just a Joe Schmoe wanting to take it easy and casual, you’re seen as worthless and have no chance to actually do any of the fun activities due to gatekeeping. Huh
