Bloodborne remaster and on PC

(Pls miyazaki I beg you!)

AVengefulAxolotl ,

To be honest with myself, I am kind of the same. For the lemmy devs and lemmy.world, there are 1€ / month tiers on patreon. Its not that much but at the very least its more than nothing.

AVengefulAxolotl ,

Buddy, this is a linux post not a windows one

AVengefulAxolotl ,

Our dog hates black cats, but completely ignores the other white & brown cat fr

AVengefulAxolotl ,

Just dont look at Ubisoft. 💀

Ad/promotion appeared in offline games whenever you opened the map…

AVengefulAxolotl ,

Yeah sadly, whenever you say PC / Laptop people associate it with windows. You buy one of these, its windows. People dont even know what else is out there.

AVengefulAxolotl ,

However, if they say ‘okay guys, we heard you, one more year of support!’. This way they could farm so much PR points its insane.

Cant guess which one they will choose tbh.

AVengefulAxolotl ,

Yeah, the start menu ads were / are ‘only’ in the beta build.

AVengefulAxolotl ,

For windows you dont need to buy it, you can activate it using microsofts own tools, its on github (dont remember its name right now.)

As for linux, i would recommend openSUSE Tumbleweed, it is fresh, and the best part about it is that whenever you update the system, it creates a snapshot, so if the update had some kind of undesired sideeffects, you can just startup the old version. (These snapshots only effect the system’s packages, your apps will keep their state iirc. My brother uses tumbleweed and he is very content with it.)

AVengefulAxolotl ,

Yeah, if there is one thing that windows 11 does well is looks. I think its fancy.

AVengefulAxolotl ,

My exact thoughts as well. Im like:

“Huhh wtf, this cant be true. Ahh it must be the Onion. Wait wat… This is not the onion…”

AVengefulAxolotl ,

I actually dont understand why news and such written blogs stopped with sponsors. I dont want tracking pixels, autoplaying videos and all that bullshit. Have a static small paragraph with a referral link, thats it.

For example on adventofcode, there was a static ad for spotify job application. This is an ad which i can advocate for. Creator of the site gets money, the ad is not intrusive, and it targets programmers who would just naturally navigate to this site.

AVengefulAxolotl ,

Yeah, but until then we can support these projects. Even a one-time 10€ donation can go a huge distance, or monthly 1€ even. These add up.

P.S. To any open source devs, please allow us to donate yearly recurring 10-15€! There are so many projects to support, but i have to live from something as well.

AVengefulAxolotl ,

Even if you agree with something, you can play the ‘devils advocate’ and say what is wrong. You need to look at both sides.

I for example despise Apple. But i gotta admit their phones are pretty good if you just want a smartphone. Or if everything you have is apple, then the ecosystem is really nice.

Try to understand the other side, and be the opposing person. So these conversations can happen.

AVengefulAxolotl ,

Stop it! You make android look good, oh no!

/s

AVengefulAxolotl ,

Yeah, this extension is crazy good. It works as if it was native.

AVengefulAxolotl ,

While I agree, but i tried Brave Search for a few weeks, and it seemed pretty good.

I wouldnt use Brave Browser, because Vivaldi is there (if you need Chromium.) But for a search engine which is free? DuckDuckGo maybe?

P.S. Kagi search is pretty good if you are willing to pay.

Music Piracy Is Back, Baby (gizmodo.com)

“Muso, a research firm that studies piracy, concluded that the high prices of streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music are pushing people back towards illegal downloads. Spotify raised its prices by one dollar last year to $10.99 a month, the same price as Apple Music. Instead of coughing up $132 a year, more consumers...

AVengefulAxolotl ,

I still use spotify as well. It works for me, i just found like 10 new songs last week. At the same time, last year i listened 2hrs/day on average.

BUT at the same time, every few months i export my whole playlists, just in case, using this site.

What are some hidden indie gems nobody knows about?

Which indies did you discover and would love more people to know about? I’ll start: The Pale Beyond. Not sure if it’s a hidden gem tbh, but it’s such a good story rich game. I laughed, I cried and felt the characters struggles. If you like story rich games/ choices matter, check it out.

AVengefulAxolotl ,

I bought it discounted because i remember that i have seen it before. I really did not expect it to be this good. The world, the storyline and the combat are just awesome. Highly recommended!

AVengefulAxolotl ,

Shadows of doubt is a sandbox detective game. You are a detective and you have to solve crimes, which are totally randomized. What makes this interesting is that the world does not stop:

  • the NPCs actually have daily routines
  • the murderer might not stop killing
  • you can talk with anyone
  • and so much more

It is truly a sandbox! I havent played it too much yet, but i feel if i really start playing it, then i will skip going to bed!

AVengefulAxolotl , (edited )

It should be fine I think. On Linux you can have multiple Desktop Environments installed (ex KDE Plasma & Gnome as well.)

I tried Hyprland a few months ago like this. I had Plasma installed then installed hyprland as well. During login with SDDM you can select which DE to launch.

Edit: On github it says you should install it alone to make sure. I dont know then, maybe it works? I am still new to Linux as well.

AVengefulAxolotl ,

Cyberpunk 2077 or The witcher 3 maybe? I think both of these open world games are absolutely fantastic.

AVengefulAxolotl ,

Its not for everyone. Just like any other game.

One appeal of the souls-like games is having one difficulty only. It makes balancing much easier.

At the same time people can talk about the game, and actually be talking about the same game. With different difficulties games can change a lot.

AVengefulAxolotl ,

Im using the Xiaomi Mi9t as well. Straight from MIUI to Android 14 custom ROM with Niagara Launcher. Its so awesome. I still love that there isnt any notch or hole on the screen.

AVengefulAxolotl ,

I think categories/topics would be great as well. Maybe a collection for read later, tech, news etc. So i could sort them better.

AVengefulAxolotl ,

Absolutely agree with the youtube subscription part. I am not giving them money if i can.

So what do I do? Patreon. I watch ad free, and i give 1 dollar a month instead on patreon. Win-win.

P.S. However, this way only a select few get money from me, but it is what it is.

AVengefulAxolotl ,

You know, RSS exists to literally circumvent this problem, albeit for articles. A lot of sites still have it, people just forgot that this is a thing. Little bit of a chore to setup, but its actually pretty nice. Obviously finding these sites is the hard part, but a good search engine (kagi btw) could make it work.

Also PeerTube exists as well, which reduces the cost of hosting videos.

AVengefulAxolotl ,

Wow, are you me?? :D

I almost did the same, just my phone is not a pixel, so i had to resort to some other custom ROM. And I still just use good ol’ firefox with proton VPN most of the time.

P.S. I also blocked our TV from accessing the internet as well. Ex. Codeberg is a GitHub replacement, and on mobile Grayjay/LibreTube works great for youtube.

AVengefulAxolotl ,

I dont understand it either. I would happily donate to signal yearly like 10-15€, but 5 every month? No, thats just too much sorry.

AVengefulAxolotl ,

But gotta admit, its a damn good launcher! If i had to use windows again, I would install it instead of the other two for sure!

AVengefulAxolotl ,

Nice! We are looking into it with my boss and one other colleague. Im really hoping it goes through and I can finally use Linux at work!

AVengefulAxolotl ,

Vertical tabs: Sidebery. It might actually be better than the Vivaldi native. I havent used vivaldi with vertical tabs that much, its just a work/secondary browser for me.

Gestures: Gesturify. This is just better than the vivaldi native one.

Tab tiling: well you got me on this one. This is actually pretty neat.

To be clear, I like vivaldi as well, it is my chromium of choice but with the above two extensions firefox is chefs kiss.

AVengefulAxolotl ,

For me it is only 5 extensions really which are essential. uBlock Origin, Dark reader, Sidebery & Gesturify & User agent switcher (it can come in handy every once in a while).

P.S. There is a little caveat to vertical tabs which i forgot. You have to follow an easy 5 step guide on how to hide horizontal tabs when sidebery is active.

AVengefulAxolotl ,

Im sorry, but dont know what you are refering to. Could you elaborate?

AVengefulAxolotl ,

Yeah, xiaomi mi 9t with pixelos. Then Universal Android Debloater, disable all the telemetry (wish I could just use this thing without google, but thats a topic for another day), got a new case and battery. It literally feels like i just bought a new phone even though this thing will be 5 years old!

AVengefulAxolotl ,

Its crazy how polarizing the Linux experience can be. Was it a desktop or laptop? For me it was just a few clicks (Manjaro then Endeavour) on the first try and be done with it on my desktop PC. Also with dual booting.

Hopefully next time you will have more luck! “Sadly” I cannot go back to windows now, I got Linux-pilled. Linux just treats my right without any Microsoft ads.

AVengefulAxolotl ,

If you need a UI to have albums and share them then yes, the previously mentioned Immich. I host it as well, and it is truly awesome.

One caveat though: it is still pretty early in development, there might be breaking changes. For example a few weeks ago you needed to update the docker compose file because they changed dependencies.

AVengefulAxolotl ,

Yeah, its called an AI girlfriend. Damn, some people actually pay for that.

AVengefulAxolotl ,

The best subscription model I have seen so far is for the JetBrains products. They call it the perpetual fallback license.

Quote: “A perpetual fallback license is a license that allows you to use a specific version of software without an active subscription for it. The license also includes all bugfix updates, more specifically in X.Y.Z version all Z releases are included.”

AVengefulAxolotl ,

Because you need to pay for further patches / newer versions, and need to pay 12 months worth to be able to use without a subscription.

It gets cheaper each year, so it incentivizes you to pay year to year.

Their explanation of the license

AVengefulAxolotl ,

I dont know really, havent used paid versions of JetBrains products. I was always just eyeing with them.

AVengefulAxolotl ,

Yeah i guess you are right. Did not even think about it.

AVengefulAxolotl ,

Of course they do, there will always be people who pirate. Most people dont mind paying for stuff and services if it respects them.

There is Baldurs Gate 3 for example, you can buy it on GOG without DRM, and I highly doubt it made a dent in their sales.

AVengefulAxolotl ,

Yeah i agree, that most people do not pirate because of morality, but because pirating is more convenient meanwhile being way cheaper, you said it yourself. I do not watch a whole lot of movies or shows, but for example if i could buy Arcane, I would, but instead I can only watch it if I buy a Netflix subscription. I dont like this arbitrary limitation to be honest, you could buy movies back in the day.

For games, it is the case, because steam is actually a good service. People got what they wanted from Baldurs Gate 3 plus it is on a service which gives you tons of features. For example netflix on the other hand just limits how you consume content instead of enabling you other features.

One more thing, when Netflix was the only streaming service, people actually paid for it. Now that it is worse, pricier and there are more competing streaming services, it is way more convenient to pirate.

AVengefulAxolotl ,

Sadly this is the same with framework laptops or fairphone’s devices as well. They are great products, but their price to value ratio is way worse than these big companies.

Luckily if I need devices that these companies produce, I will definitely buy from them.

AVengefulAxolotl ,

You dont ‘need’ custom CSS. It already adjusts to your firefox theme, so it actually looks as if it was native. Its such an awesome extension!

YouTube warns it might make your viewing experience worse if you don't turn off your ad-blocker (www.businessinsider.com)

YouTube warns it might make your viewing experience worse if you don’t turn off your ad-blocker::YouTube has been cracking down on people using ad blockers. Now, a spokesperson says that using ad blockers could lead to “suboptimal viewing.”

AVengefulAxolotl ,

It is not ‘might’. We know they will do something like that.

Before AI went viral, how much did Giogle search improve, Youtube at all? Not at all really, but they cranked up the adverts. So now i am paying for Kagi search, I also sponsor open source projects so dont tell me that I am entitled. Youtube is the last Google product that cannot be replaced as of right now.

At the end of the day all i want is to be a customer, not a product.
