Companies are often insane. I’m working in one who has this one guy build a super complicated architecture, because he don’t know aws. So instead of just using a message queue on aws, he is building Java programs and tons of software and containers to try and send messages in a reliable way. Costs the company huge money, but they don’t care, since he is some old timer who has been there for like 10 years and everyone let’s him do what he wants.

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

It’s a different form of lock-in since it’s just his creation. When he leaves, all of this will be very hard to maintain and the company will probably rebuild it all on aws.

I have been bringing this up but they say that it’s too late to change direction now (they are afraid to upset the guy).

But I’m looking on the bright side. I get to learn a lot of stuff I otherwise I wouldnt if this was a single managed aws service. I’m bringing in terraform and instead of just putting a message queue there, I need to spin up entire architectures to run his ec2 instances with all the apps and everything required to make things work.

Takes months… So for me it’s fun. I don’t have to pay for it. But companies are crazy. :)

Pentagon combat drones: “I’m flying off the wing of something that’s making its own decisions.” (Aug. 27) (www.nytimes.com)

Recently revised Pentagon policy allows for autonomous use of lethal force. In test later this year, combat drone will be asked to chase, kill simulated target, coming up with own strategy for mission. Second program’s goal is Air Force that is more unpredictable and lethal.

I’m learning how to drive now and I picked manual transmission. Because it’s a lot easier to switch to automatic later if I would need to.

Asked some younger guys at driving school why they picked automatic, and their response was that they believe manual will go away in cars and it will all be automatic.

Maybe so. But it still can’t hurt to know it. Many old cars will be around for a long time.

How to retain my evening optimism?

Sometimes when I stay up late doing something creative I end up getting this very comforting feeling about the future. A sort of certainty that everything will work out in the end and that luck happy coincidences will always be on my side. has your YouTube consumption decreased after implementing the "no history, no recommendations" feature?

I noticed my consumption has decased quite a bit. I would visit regularly to watch content from few channels. I would probably still visit every so often to watch the new videos. But the experience has become more deliberate and conscious. I go to YouTube because I want to go and watch something specific. Mindlessly browsing and...

I don’t buy this. We don’t know why we are here, and we learn a lot more from painful experiences than happy ones.

There is both evil and good in the world. As far as I can tell, most people are good. But there are a minority of evil ones and they are much more interested in having power, so they work to get high up into our systems where they get the power they crave.

You put it on a better way than me, but yes, exactly.

How do people find good information on the internet these days?

It used to be that you would do a search on a relevant subject and get blog posts, forums posts, and maybe a couple of relevant companies offering the product or service. (And if you wanted more information on said company you could give them a call and actually talk to a real person about said service) You could even trust...

I use Kagi and it’s just amazing. Don’t have any problems. You can also configure Kagi to prioritize certain sites and remove others you don’t care about. Very happy with it.

The bullshit is because Google wants you to visit shitty sites because of ad revenues.

You should embrace systemd. It’s actually good. Replaces all startup scripts, logs to a common log, even has scheduled systemd jobs just like cron but better, since they can have proper dependencies. Want to run something right after network stack is up and working? Easy with systemd, more difficult with cron and more hacky.

I never know what those people do to their systems. It never breaks for me and I’ve been using it like 10 years on all my computers, including at work while working as a consultant.

It’s pretty important to have a working computer in that role and i never had any issues with stuff breaking. Smaller things like screen sharing was glitchy and so on, but that happened in all distros and had to do with Nvidia shitty drivers.

No but if humans becomes as smart as cats and dogs, we may have a chance to survive.

Humans are the dumbest creatures on the planet. Completely unable to coexist with nature. Most of us can’t survive without shops. And we kill eachother because we think evil is in other counties, not ours.

Now I’m at a smaller company and we don’t have standups, 1 on 1s etc. I have 2 meetings per week only. It’s fantastic. Made me really like this job.

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yes there are pros and cons to every situation. You are right that it’s harder for new employees to learn. It takes more time. But the advantages of working from home are amazing and so much worth it anyway.

The entire idea of everyone leaving their apartments every morning, when they have everything they need to work at home, contributing to environment destruction, morning stress to get to work, an entire workday of hours lost in traffic every week etc… What are we doing? It’s madness.

Most people used to spend 10 hours every week traveling to work! That’s 40 hours per month - an entire work week just gone sitting in traffic every month! What if you exercise 40 hours per month instead. You would be in stellar shape.

We are supposed to be living life, don’t waste it.

You think so? I’m not miserable at all, if that’s what you think… I’m actually really happy. But the work we do have no real meaning I think, but I would love to hear why you think it’s meaningful.

My girlfriend too, she works for big corp and have tons of meetings. But she is not interested in being a maker (like someone who does the work). She wants to be a manager that tells others what to do. And she is, and she is miserable most of the time.

I think some people just value the status higher than their happiness.

Guys you need to stop using this software. Why do you think so many fan boys are yelling about linux all the time? Because it’s fantastic these days.
