It’s on my bucket list to do this also one day. It’s fun to mess around.

Gentoo probably doesn’t have all packages. One of the reasons I love Arch is because it almost always has any package in the AUR. It’s a lot more work to try and get something installed on Ubuntu related distros. They try to keep up by using snaps and stuff but it’s still no comparison. Arch has everything.

Still it’s gets a bit boring now since I know it so well, so want to try Gentoo at some point also.

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Ok cool, even more interested in trying it now.

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yeah I did when I was new to Linux, several times. It was an awesome learning experience.

About 2.5 hours before lunch, then long 90 minute lunch, then maybe 3 hours. So I guess around 5.5 hours.

Modern slavery. They are exploiting your need to help people to make you work until you drop.

This is a common trap for your group.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

It always says 8 hour work day, doesn’t it? I read that as being at work but not working 8 hours. Nobody can work 8 hours of actual work unless you love your job.

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Slavery was great for the slave owners, so what’s controversial about that?

And yes, of course it’s economically awesome if people work without getting much money for it, again a huge plus for the bottom line of the companies.

Capitalism is evil against people, not the AI…

Hitler was also an effective leader, nobody can argue against that. How else could he conquer most of Europe? Effective is something that evil people can be also.

That women in the article being shocked by this simply expected the AI to remove Hitler from all included leaders because he was evil. She is surprised that an evil person is included in effective leaders and she wanted to be shielded from that and wasn’t.

Some of that information may also not be completely accurate since there is a lot of interest in portraying this guy a certain way. Just something to keep in mind.

In isolation you can feel like the work you’re doing is meaningless and not providing any value to anyone

What if this is true?

It is meaningless. People just remember this when being at home.

People who grow up in that system sometimes have a hard time understanding why you would do it differently.

People don’t even understand why the Linux kernel was not made into a big tech company so Linus Thorvald could become a billionaire. Because there is nothing out there to make them think another way.

People do things for other reasons than money, but that seems to be a mystery to some people. Turning down money and power, why??

Honestly, I love statically compiled binaries for their simplicity. I was writing a small utility in Rust today and I wanted to share it with a colleague on windows.

One command to cross compile my Linux version to windows version and it worked on first attempt on his computer. To me it’s worth giving up a lot of the advantages of shared libraries for that kind of simplicity.

There is no install. There is only run.

I think Lemmy.world should not have 99.999% of communities.

We can have one fediverse community but it should not be on Lemmy.world. It’s already extreamly centralized with almost all users. It should have all communities as well?

I feel the same about every other duplicate community. Because i actually care about having a decentralized fediverse.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Just picking from those two, but yes, I agree. I would put it on a instance that is below the top 10 instances, and I would do the same for all duplicate communities.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Close the one on Lemmy.world to promote decentralization.

Did anyone try to return to reddit and notice it just didn't do it for you anymore?

So I’ve switched to lemmy since the reddit meltdown started, experienced quite some withdrawal symptoms, occasionally turned back to reddit, more often logged out than logged in. Now I am merely using Lemmy occasionally and by far not as often as I used reddit before. No more doom scrolling....

I didn’t return, don’t want to…

It used to be that banning was reserved for some extreme people. Now, you can get banned for stating an opinion that others think is offensive.

Things have changed a lot in the last decades. People get offended by anything now.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Because admins don’t think it’s anything wrong. They never stop and think if it’s OK to ban someone just like that. They don’t see users as people and don’t give them a chance to even explain. Who has time for that right…

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

It still gets slower with time? I remember how it used to do that in the 90s too, and you had to reinstall once in a while to get your speed back. Lol.

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I don’t have Microsoft edge on my Linux system. :)

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

At least in Sweden tech, it’s fine to use Linux it seems. I haven’t been blocked from it. But the company may not have official support for it, so you have to know how to set up vpn etc.

It’s all habitual. Companies employees normally don’t require windows for anything they do. I run outlook in the web browser, same with teams… Etc.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

No I’m OK with it, whatever. It’s worth it big time to not run windows. :)

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Fuck these guys.

I really dislike YouTube now and influencers the most. Something is wrong with these people in their heads.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I guess I don’t think these people are role models.

They are more like personalities that people liked, and then it snowballed and they became famous because people know their names and they become like a brand.

There are people that dislike mainstream brands, and I think there are people who dislike mainstream influencers also. We are not the same.

There guys don’t have any wisdom. They are usually self absorbed people who want attention.

1984 ,

Maybe now people can finally spread out… It’s just sad to see everyone on Lemmy.world as if it was the new Gmail or something.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Because it’s getting worse. The trend (capitalism) is about squeezing more and more money from consumers and leaving less and less value. In a year the price of streaming could be another 20% up, and they could have added more ads. Because that’s what they do, always. It’s always getting worse after the initial honeymoon period, and it keeps getting worse.

It’s very different from open source for example, where things constantly get better every year.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Nvidia has burned their reputation… Will take years to regain trust.

They are responsible for almost all issues new people have with Linux.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Red hat may be a contributor to the kernel but development is open source. See the difference between American mega corp with closed source software vs red hat contributing to the Linux kernel?

My network firewall blocks thousands of Microsoft tracking attempts per hour in my home network. My linux machine has zero packets blocked. How is this the same?

I guess you claim it’s the same because you don’t understand the difference, or we are talking about something else being the same, like both have desktop environments…

One is hostile against the user privacy and the other is not. They are very different. Systemd is a boot system and it’s great. It doesn’t call home.

Why do people still recommend Thinkpads for Linux when there are Linux-oriented manufacturers now?

I’ve noticed in the Linux community whenever someone asks for a recommendation on a laptop that runs Linux the answer is always “Get a Thinkpad” yet Lenovo doesn’t seem to be a big Linux contributor or ally. There’s also at least six Linux/FOSS-oriented computer manufacturers now:...

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I don’t like thinkpads anymore. They used to be great but Lenovo decided to kill off their best feature - the keyboards.

My fingers actually hurt when typing on a ThinkPad keyboard now. They are so shit.

I think people are nostalgic and they remember what the brand used to be. But I’m not impressed by them anymore. They keep scoring top marks at notebookcheck reviews however, but every new ThinkPad has disappointed me with bad screen or bad looks or feel.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

This is not true. Some Linux guis and installs also ask the 15 questions Microsoft asks about data collection? What Linux is that?

There is a world of difference here… You can’t have used Linux nearly at all.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

In Sweden we have to pay for TV through taxes. And then they use the money to make propaganda programs paid by the tax payers. Works well for keeping the population docile.

Americans are like, shit what a rookie, I work 250 hours. This makes me a winner!

1984 ,

Why did you work that much?

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Me too.

How racist/controversial would this skit from the 90's be today?

To summarize, this scandinavian comedy trio from the 90’s made a parody of Miami Vice. This being 90’s scandinavia, you can probably guess that the actors/comedians didn’t exactly have the melanin-credentials of parodying the black guy from Miami Vice, so one of them instead wore blackface (well, brownface would perhaps be...

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I loved that show. To me it’s not racist whatsoever.

Will check out the parody though, love those :)

Subscriptions.

People pay every month but most don’t use the sub to it’s full value, and forget how expensive it becomes over the years. And you don’t own anything on a subscription, you just borrow it.

Also trial periods that prolong automatically into subscriptions.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I remember that exakt feeling a long time ago and I also never went back. It’s just too good. :)

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Haha didn’t even notice it was hosted somewhere else since I didn’t click the link.

But the point is, videos have a lot of downsides and very few upsides. Sometimes it’s good to get a visual explanation of something but more often than not, videos are designed to focus on the influencer and to be entertaining.

I just want to get to the information myself.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Give me an example… What file on disk are you generating a pulumi resource from?

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Explains all the memes being popular I guess… Minimum effort :)

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Hehe yeah that’s true. But we are so happy with it and we really want others to not contribute to the surveillance capitalism… :)
