Whatever reason Google makes up for Manifest 3, we all know it’s to reduce efficient ad blocking.

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Depends on how it’s implemented.

If it leads to anyone subscribing to a tag (like technology) would get posts from all instances in the Lemmy network tagged with technology, it would make it much better for all smaller instances to get an audience without posting to the larger ones.

This is in my opinion how it should be implemented, so it’s not important where a community is stored.

But if its just a way to tag posts with several tags, it may lead to posts being really spammy in nature, and everyone using 5 tags on each post. I think mastadon posts here on Lemmy are already a bit spammy.

Google Chrome pushes browser history-based ad targeting • The Register (www.theregister.com)

Topics essentially works like this: rather than using cookies to track people around the web and figure out their interests from the sites they visit and the apps they use, websites can ask Chrome directly, via its Topics JavaScript API, what sort of things the user is interested in, and then display ads based on that. Chrome...

Yeah it used to be a joke but now nobody is laughing…

It’s disgusting. Users browser history is private, just like their search history. Fuck Google.

I never read these articles either because it will definently ruin the game. A game without a challange is just boring.

I’ve worked at a company and had exactly the same experience. People were sitting in hallways with constant walking and noise, trying to work, just “because”.

I used to say that the office is now the worst place to work, and we may as well sit at McDonald’s next to the baloon section with kids.

And we are paying for this experience, paying for fuel, and paying for time or tickets to get to and from the place… :)

Depends. I don’t think “successful” means the same as “having the most users”.

The Linux community is awesome and we are only 3%. It’s already enough users for Linux to be amazing.

Bernie Sanders Champions 32-Hour Work Week With No Loss in Pay (www.commondreams.org)

As part of his Labor Day message to workers in the United States, Sen. Bernie Sanders on Monday re-upped his call for the establishment of a 20% cut to the workweek with no loss in pay—an idea he said is “not radical” given the enormous productivity gains over recent decades that have resulted in massive profits for...

I have 35 days on my current job but it’s the first time. Normally it’s been 30. I’m in Sweden.

And we don’t work no 40 hours here. People come in around 9 and leave around 16 with an hour lunch break and a lot of talking and slacking during the day. This is in IT and it’s been like that on every IT job I’ve ever had.

Nobody can or want to focus for 8 hours per day their entire lives, that’s madness. We are humans. I usually focus for maybe 4 hours to get something done but I don’t push myself to work more then necessary. My salary doesn’t go up with more work produced.

Twitter accused of helping Saudi Arabia commit human rights abuses (www.theguardian.com)

The social media company formerly known as Twitter has been accused in a revised civil US lawsuit of helping Saudi Arabia commit grave human rights abuses against its users, including by disclosing confidential user data at the request of Saudi authorities at a much higher rate than it has for the US, UK, or Canada....

Rant about Nvidia related updates on Linux (kbin.social)

There are many reasons to dislike Nvidia on Linux. Here is a little thing that bugs me all the time, the updates. Normally the system updates would be quick and fast, but with the proprietary drivers of Nvidia involved, it gets quiet slow process. And I am not even talking about any other problem I encounter, just about the...

I was wondering what the fuss was about until I read flatpak. I don’t use those, no reason to on Arch since everything is in the AUR. But it was interesting to read.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Oh that’s where you are wrong… Arch is actually really special. No other distro comes close to being so easy to install the latest version of software. I’ve run almost all major Debian based linuxes also and they are mostly frustrating in comparison.

You just can’t find the software you need, or you have to download it manually, meaning it’s not even updated by your package manager. People resort to flatpak and the likes just to be able to have the software they need since it’s not packaged in any other way.

Arch is just better and I highly recommend it.

This deserved 172 downvotes appearently… Lol :)

It’s a very very sensitive Lemmy user group…

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Honestly I wouldn’t even downvote.

I think having an opinion is something I appreciate, even when it’s not a popular one or one I agree with.

Lots of little keyboard warriors gets upset when someone has an opinion they don’t agree with, but to me, that’s perfectly normal.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I would expect no responses or upvotes if nobody agrees.

But I understand what you are saying. You think downvotes should be used to express disagreement, just like upvotes are used to express agreement.

I will use whatever words I want. :)

In this case, the OP was probably trolling. But there are many people who go out of their way to be insulted by almost anything these days.

I miss the 90s a lot. The 70s were probably even better but I was too young.

I like this sort of humor but I bet it’s offensive to women today. :)

I’m also convinced that joking the same way about a man would be considered funny and totally OK.

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Showed it to my girlfriend and she laughed out loud. :)

About memes, I wasn’t even sure what a meme was when it came. Nobody could explain what it was or why it was funny. Now it’s obvious that the meme viewer needs experience from the meme situation, otherwise the meme makes no sense to the viewer.

Why are people hyped about RSS regaining relevance? (lemmy.world)

According to Google Trends, during the past few years, there has been nothing but a few minor bumps that faded away as quickly as they came. I love RSS because i do not have to scroll through dozens of different news sites all day and i would love it to return....

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I would like the majority to keep using the ad infested web so I can use RSS and Lemmy.

If everyone used RSS, companies would quickly complain that they don’t make money on their shitty web sites.

Big tech tries hard to act like the Internet Government, don’t they… Who elected them?

Well not anymore. I cancelled most of them, and I suspect more people will do the same eventually.

Depends on how it’s done. If ads are just regular posts, it’s impossible to separate them from normal content. Maybe they could be blocked by blocking the bot posting the ad… I don’t know how this would work. Guess we will see.

What's a skill that's taken for granted where you live, but is often missing in people moving there from abroad?

I was thinking about that when I was dropping my 6 year old off at some hobbies earlier - it’s pretty much expected to have learned how to ride a bicycle before starting school, and it massively expands the area you can go to by yourself. When she went to school by bicycle she can easily make a detour via a shop to spend some...

Very good. People give odd looks about anything that doesn’t fit their little bubble world, so just ignore them. :)

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yeah absolutely. I learned at 35. Maybe you learn faster than me. :)

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Honestly I was just so concerned all the time about what others were thinking, to the degree that i got scared of doing anything even remotely outside the box.

It changed when I got tired of feeling that way every single day. I just had enough of that feeling you know? It’s a bit like just getting sick of your own emotions and you just feel this need to escape that emotion.

I think some people drink to kill that feeling. But I’m not a big drinker. Mother was alcoholic and it wrecked everything completely. I knew there must be a better way.

I think it starts with realizing that other people are not better then you. You need to stop apologizing for who you are and just realize that you are fine. And also to like yourself for something. Maybe you are just kinder then others. Whatever it is, start focusing on that and realize you are good enough and you don’t have to apologize for existing in this world.

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I have the same mindset as you and I agree, but I have almost never managed to convince someone else to go into contracting. They don’t want to risk that sweet stable income. :)

Also some of them buy into the entire thing with colleagues being their friends etc etc.

Some of them prioritize family in front of work and want their jobs to be as easy as possible so they can focus on their families instead.

But yes, to me being an employee is the worst form of employment. You usually don’t learn much after the initial year, and you get lazy and stop learning. Your skills are therefore not growing anymore. Getting a new job is harder, and you are likely to accept the first offer once you want to switch.
