You actually have to work on yourself to get those upgrades. Takes a bit of effort but can be done.

Sadly they don’t teach people anything about how to handle their emotions in school, so people never even attempt to get some skills in that area.

If you don’t know how to master your emotions, you will never become a jedi.

This happens all the time. Companies are bleeding money into the air every second to aws, but they have enough money to not care much.

AWS really was brilliant in how they built a cloud and how they marketed everything as “pay only for what you use”.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I mean, I would put brilliant in quotes in the way that it’s brilliant for their profits. Not brilliant in the way of making the world a better place.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I think both are consequences of the cloud.

It’s cheaper for companies to just add more compute than to pay devs to optimize the code.

And it’s also not so important to overpay for server capacity they don’t use.

Both of these things leads to AWS making more money.

It’s also really good for aws that once these things are built, they just keep bringing in money on their own 24 hours per day.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Good idea, it’s wasted space anyway so may as well use it.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Sure but why would you assume it’s not taken into account?

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Fair enough. I haven’t followed this development nearly at all myself. I’m hoping to buy solar panels for my house in the future but I want their efficiency to improve.

Lemmy.world federates with Threads and becomes the new reddit. Most people stay on it anyway since it has all communities and it’s still better than reddit used to be.

Ads are introduced since big instances now needs to be funded due to their size. The ads will be federated and there will be discussions about how everyone must support this model because instance admins need to pay their bills.

An alternative to Lemmy comes along without ads. It’s smaller but works in a similar way. People who cant stand ads move there instead. Eventually it gets the same problems as Lemmy has.

There will be a lot of fragmentation in the Lemmyverse. Users can’t stand seeing opinions they don’t support, so they will move to instances with lots of blocking and rules that support their own views. Inside this bubble they will enjoy seeing only supporting opinions and feel good while using Lemmy.

People are really late to the party but better late then never…

Linux is awesome.

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

People like this don’t fall out of a window by accident. They are not stupid or careless. I read the article and it’s really light on details too. It says he had fall damage and that’s it.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Sure but it’s extreamly unlikely that this particular person would fall out of a window. There are people in the world that are very often involved in accidents, due to their personality and risk taking behavior. But people like this guy is not one of those.

It’s not impossible of course.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yup so far. It’s the beginning of the curve now when everything is new and awesome.

Enjoy it while it lasts.

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

This is not true. You are living in a warm house and have fresh water and food and a lot of nice furniture. We don’t think about these things but that’s because they are default now.

Its life experience my man :)

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I’ve been a contractor too so I know what you mean. But most people are not and don’t want to be. It’s more risky and most people just want safety.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

The root cause is what we call evidence and if it can be trusted or not. Some people will trust some evidence and others won’t. This is why a person don’t agree sometimes that they are wrong. It’s all relative to what evidence you believe or don’t believe.

Maybe it will make people see Google for what they are. So many are stuck in some kind of illusion.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

You made it!

This was my experience too the first times. It was quite hard to get it booting, so many things to learn.

And the best part is, nothing else about Linux is more difficult to understand. It’s all easier from here. Learning about systemd, or config files… It’s easy compared to just getting that install to work.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

For me it’s more that I don’t get excited about things other people do. Like going to tourist hot spots. Worst places to be ever.

If I can spend my weekend at home, it’s really nice and I don’t get bored.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

No I leave it alone of course. Why would I kill an animal because it’s near me?

I do kill mosquitos though because they bite me.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I have a feeling people will be disappointed.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Free market ideas always sounded like cartoon level intelligence to me. Some kind of a perfect world where everyone acts morally and people are well informed and chooses the right companies etc.

1984 , (edited )
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

All the big corps get a free pass because of money and power, and this is why free market doesn’t work.

Democracy doesn’t work either since media is owned by big corps as well. People can only know what they are allowed to know. If you are rich and powerful, you manipulate the media and you manipulate entire elections and decisions.

After a while, you actually see how all these systems are manipulated dally.

Tailscale is super simple. Install it on two computers you want to be able to talk to eachother, doesn’t matter where they are as long as they have internet access. Authenticate with Tailscale on both computers and you are done.

You are paying aws to not have one big server, so you get high availability and dynamic load balancing as instances come and go.

I agree its not cheaper than being on prem. But it’s much higher quality solutions.

Today at work, they decided to upgrade from ancient Ubuntu version to a more recent version. Since they don’t use aws properly, they treat servers as pets. So to upgrade Ubuntu, they actually upgraded Ubuntu on the instance instead of creating a new one. This led to grub failing and now they are troubleshooting how to mount disks etc.

All of this could easily be avoided by using the cloud properly.

Why are YouTube comments so much different than any other comments made online

YouTube comment sections are weirdly positive always. It could be a video of some horrible crime and the comments will be about how great the channel is and encouraging the channel to keep making more videos. When j visit actual fan pages anywhere else online there are always a mix of opinions. But youtube is constantly full of...

Pentagon combat drones: “I’m flying off the wing of something that’s making its own decisions.” (Aug. 27) (www.nytimes.com)

Recently revised Pentagon policy allows for autonomous use of lethal force. In test later this year, combat drone will be asked to chase, kill simulated target, coming up with own strategy for mission. Second program’s goal is Air Force that is more unpredictable and lethal.

We can’t do shit. Warfare is super profitable. Why do you think there are always conflicts and wars… Because people can’t get along? No it’s more about profits from wars, and the power it gives.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I mean sure, turn to streaming competitors, but they are not going to be any better in the long term.

The entire subscription model sucks. It’s really bad value for the consumer and makes us pay huge amount of money every month for nothing once we have watched what we want to watch.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Maybe it’s better than cable but it’s still not worth the money in my opinion. All my subs are just idling (the two I have left). There is nothing good on there and it sucks paying for something I don’t use just in case there will be a show worth watching in the future.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I think people like you and me who don’t like the most stupid shit on the streaming services are not getting value for money. Maybe it’s great for people who love whatever comes up there, but Im having a hard time finding something I actually want to watch too.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yeah I don’t think I want to juggle subscriptions between 5 different streaming providers. Not my idea of fun.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I kind of agree, it’s nothing special, but the new window management they talked about sounds exciting actually. But thats far in the future.

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I don’t think that’s possible. You can switch between gtk and kde file pickers though.

Google just made it a lot easier for people to begin automating their smart home (www.engadget.com)

Google has really tried to go all in on automation since the rollout of its redesigned Home app in May. There’s been the introduction of a new script editor, Nest Cam Indoor integration and, now, a whole slew of new routines to use. The company has announced 18 new routines — half starters and half actions — immediately...

It’s 2023.

People are installing survellience devices in their homes because they now trust the most invasive advertising company connected to NSA with complete insight into their lives.

Some people would argue that most people no longer cares if they are being watched by governments and corporations, even at home.

Americans like their presidents old as fuck and insane or demented. :)

I swear, as long as they are good at talking in a way so people think they are in the same situation as the douschebag millionaire, they vote for him.

“Make America great again by voting for me, old corrupted smelly old man”.

It’s 2023 and people still believe what these guys say.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

There is a name for this debating technique where you go “sure, there was nothing good about Hitler - except he cared about dogs!”. Can’t remember. Is it strawman?

I think we all understand that capitalism is mostly bad for humans, and really good for corporations and their owners. AI and robots will be exploited to replace people since they are massively more powerful and much cheaper.

A few things will be better I guess, but most will be worse. People already are not actually needed to work this much anymore, and as soon as they can be replaced with something cheaper and more efficient they will. That is capitalism.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Humans are consumers, they will buy stuff. But most won’t work for corporations anymore since robots and AI are far more effective at most jobs.

Humans will still buy the stuff robots produce. Maybe the money will come from governments as some kind of citizen coins, distributed differently based on some criteria. Not sure.
