I like seeing the posts of people finding comfort with their new linux installs even tho they might appear a couple of times.
Linux is still considered a niche so the most likelihood of the newer folk appearing is higher then the more experienced ones. Also I wasn’t always experienced and if it wasn’t for newbie friendly content I wouldn’t be here helping other people as well.
After all, information doesn’t spawn out of thin air, it requires someone to carry and distribute it so that other people become also educated in those ways.
Which is way I find weird finding some people say “people are dumb they should do x, y or z cause its better” but then they don’t provide any information and expect others to also know what they already know/have learned recently.
In conclusion, sharing is caring and I don’t mind people sharing their experiences which also helps others on the same situation.
What would have made you feel better? My guess is that you would have been happy if the other person wasn’t upset with what you said and didn’t disagree with you, right? Do you think if you were able to explain yourself, then the other person would have understood you and not disagreed with you?
It’s likely that would have not been the case. There is a very good chance that they still would have disagreed with you even after elaboration. And you know what? It’s not your fault.
You will have a large set of views about different facets of life. Even if they were all the most sane, rational views, many people will disagree with them. (And in different combinations. You may have Andy agree with you on X, Y, and Z but disagree on Q, R, and S. Brad may think you’re right with X, R, and S but disagree on the rest.)
It is inevitable. So, what is someone to do?
First, is it something that matters? If it’s something like an opinion of which celebrity has the best smile, remind yourself it doesn’t matter.
But if it’s something that does matter? Make sure you educate yourself. Accept evidence to the contrary to what you believe (from reliable sources). Keep an open mind. Accept input. Be aware of your own bias. If you need to update your own viewpoint because you found out you were wrong… Then do it! Yes, it sucks that you were wrong. But it’s better to have been wrong then correct yourself than to stay wrong. This is important… If you’re wrong, act the way you would want the other person to act if they were wrong. (You will make the world a better place doing this.)
Now, does this person still not agree with you (and you updated your own viewpoint based on facts)? Can you change their mind? Probably not. Is this a failing on your part? No. You can’t control other people, just like they can’t control you. But you can control yourself.
Being told we’re wrong sucks. But if you do not have sufficient evidence that you are wrong, then you should be confident in what you think. Instead of framing this scenario as “this person disagrees with me,” frame it as “I disagree with this person.” With time and practice, you will more easily move to “I disagree with this person, and I am ok with it.”
One last note. If it’s something that is very important to you, make sure to do what you can to make the change you want to see in the world. If you were very concerned about pollution for instance, do things like trash tag, buying less stuff, and advocating for your cause. This specific person may not help, but you can still live your life as a reflection of your own values to the best of your ability and maybe even collaborate with others as well.
Not being political here, just thinking logically. Isn’t it possible for a subgroup of a large group to do X while another subgroup of the same large group does Y?
I’m not sure if these options are mutually exclusive when it comes to large sets of individuals.
This is just logical thinking, I have no statistics and this is not a political stance.
I definitely do not count it against them as long as they know how to human at the interview. I just review the code as I would any repo.
The only thing is that with regular projects I tend to go “I noticed on your GitHub you have project X that uses technology Y, etc etc”. With H projects I just go “do you have experience with Y” and let him choose how much he wants to share about the project. So far they remain vague on the non technical details and I let them leave with their dignity intact.
So, ranked, way ahead of candidates without visible projects, but slightly behind people with projects we can discuss in detail in front of the people from HR ;)
I'm terrible at memorization and RegExp / Unix shell / Perl / Maths with x y z always gave me trouble. Far better with verbose shell like VAX/VMS and verbose programming languages and descriptive variable names.
Plex is definitely trying to monetize and I am wary of how they will reconcile all of the discount lifetime passes that were sold over the years
But I still think it is “good”. Yes, they are adding in hooks for different services and are technically a service of their own (every month there is a “free” movie they offer that I tell myself I will watch and then I never do). But all of that can pretty easily be hidden if I just want access to my library and the libraries of my friends. Its very much a case where the extra features are not getting in the way of the core functionality.
I have “see if jellyfin is viable” on my todo list and have been checking in for years now. Basically every time I do it is “This looks better than it used to be but X or Y is still a headache”. Hopefully that will change if/when Plex shits the bed. But they haven’t so it isn’t really a concern for me.
My disgust with it is that it’s simply a call to reduce labor not that there should be less people working on x or we should stop working on y. He views that this many people can’t be productive simply because he wants the company spending less on staff so his profits or share price goes up. It’s short sighted but since investors only care about the next quarter it doesn’t really matter to him.
“This is the story of the revelation in late 2013 that Bitcoin was, in fact, the opposite of untraceable—that its blockchain would actually allow researchers, tech companies, and law enforcement to trace and identify users with even more transparency than the existing financial system.”
I think people confuse anonymity (similar to the made up names we use here, or character names in online games, and your wallet ID in a crypto coin) to privacy. Technically, if you receive all your funds in crypto, and you spend all the crypto directly (on goods and services that do not require you to give any PII) without it ever turning to fiat. Then yes, it is anonymous but not private. People can see that wallet hash x received funds from wallet hash y and send some of that to wallet hash z and will be able to confirm that for as long as a copy of the ledger exists somewhere.
Really not sure a codebreaker needed to work this out. Anyone that spent a bit of time understanding how it worked would realise this right away. I have no doubt though, that many people had a total pikachu face when their barely concealed illegal activities were easily discovered.

Kent right here talks about how Linux related companies need to focus on putting their resources towards collaborating and helping big companies port their software and THEN introduce open source software to new users instead of remaking desktop environments, pushing companies away, and overall doing the same thing over and...
Meh, idk tf he says he understands. Like “make [ported adobe CC] popos-exclusive”: sure, big brain, how’s that supposed to work, exactly? Or “there are 3 desktops ppl GAF about”: riiiight, me along with other wm users aren’t ppl anymore, apparently.
The whole video pretty much boils down to “I don’t need X, hence nobody [«meaning the vast majority of ppl»] needs x”. By the same logic, the “vast majority” doesn’t need CC either, it’s mostly necessary for professional designers, etc 🤷
I mean it’s probably possible to choose the windows route and go “we make one steaming pile of garbage that kinda works everyone but perfectly - for nobody”, yet linux distros so far have been pro-choice and pro-customization. You want “just works”? Sure, go with X, Y, and Z distros. Wanna something specifically tailored for your workflow? You may start with the same and replace/modify stuff, but also I, J, and K are a great base to build your future setup from the ground up and avoid banging your head against the wall while figuring out what drugs their devs were on. And the same goes for DEs/WMs: gnome is, gnome also works, yet if you want to change it significantly, you’ll either have to mess with extensions or maintain a fork of a huge codebase you don’t fully understand and most of which you don’t exactly need. So, building from scratch may just be an easier solution.
Technically, you can also PR, yet it can easily be rejected, and then you’re back to forks.
Humanitarian agencies say women and menstruating people are also facing alarming rates of severe infections due to Israel's blockade of supplies and water.
Really? Which is X and which is Y in this situation?
I don’t take issue with any implication, but find the sentence somewhat unclear because of the phrasing.
Would the sentence have still been true if they had just written ‘people’? Wouldn’t a lack of access to clean water and other supplies needed for good hygiene increase infections for everyone?
If B then A is the same as if X then Y is the same as if A then B. They are saying it’s the same as the OP. Changing the letters around doesn’t change the meaning since the letters are just placeholders.
Now if you said If A then B AND If B then A as one it wouldn’t be the same because A and B would have to keep the same meaning.

I would love to hear “listen Jack, we want to get stuff done but the Republicans are blocking everything we try to pass. Give me a strong majority in the house and senate and we will pass x, y, and z. If the supreme court blocks us, we’ll look at ways we can balance the court.”
I just want to hear a plan and what we need to do to make that plan happen. You need 60 senate votes to pass universal healthcare? Say “give me 60 senate votes and we’ll pass universal healthcare”
You literally said “so of course hormone treatment [for klinefelter syndrome] is justified”. you didn’t say the exact words “it’s medically necessary” but you’re acting like for some reason it’s justified for X person to get HRT that exists solely to make their bodies more similar to what would make them comfortable, while it’s not justified for Y person to do the same thing. You’re drawing arbitrary lines for what specific condition “counts” as justification to get the treatment. And here you are admitting that you label both as “not medically necessary” yet only one you’re vehemently against and crying about online?
It’s also ignoring the fact that a large portion of people who are trans are also born with “abnormal” hormone production or sex characteristics (major chromosomal abnormalities are reported to be about 8-10x as prevalent in trans populations compared to the general population) and gender dysphoria (along with pretty much every other disorder in existence) is heavily tied to genetics, prevalence of anything like ADHD or gender dysphoria or bipolar can be traced to various sets of specific genes and in the case of e.g. latent gender dysphoria or latent bipolar or latent depression, are often present for someone’s entire life (i.e. they’re “predisposed” to it) without being “active” but then (irreversibly) start developing from, or are triggered by, events – like reaching a certain point in development (especially puberty), or experiencing certain environmental conditions over a long period of time (especially as a child), or even as an acute chemical response to a drug (for example, anti-depressants and hallucinogens can cause trigger full-blown bipolar in those who are predisposed), or various other factors, and a combination of a bunch of them.
You are discriminating against people for their medical condition and hand-picking scenarios in which medical treatment is “acceptable” with absolutely zero scientific, logical, or moral basis. You are acting on your insecurity, emotions, and hatred of trans people alone, and nothing else.
If you already live in a place that is difficult for you to afford, how are you supposed to be able to afford moving to a different state? You’re having trouble paying rent/mortgage, but you’re still able to save a few grand to move your whole life across state lines? What about changes in your income due to the change of state?
There are so many more factors than “you make x, this place costs y, so move dipshit.”

Okay, I've seen enough; I made it to 33:12. This video is way longer than it needs to be; Karl made some pretty specific allegations, which do line up with the legal definition of charity fraud (which is laid out in clear legalese in the video), if they're true. The most critical part is the way Jirard repeatedly on stream made very specific statements about where the money was going to go, or had gone, that turned out not to be true by his own later admission. The video could have started at 28:29 with "what is fraud, and did it happen," and done at most a couple minutes' Cliffs Notes for the rest.
I waited and waited for this to be addressed.
At 31:02, he artfully excerpts a statement from Jobst saying the behavior was "unethical and almost certainly illegal," by saying only the "certainly illegal" part. Those are two very different statements, and this was the first time my whoa-hold-the-fuck-up meter started to register.
At 31:30, he airs one of the statements by Jirard that's not really an issue, and explains that as a general statement it's not really an issue. How about the statements Karl took issue with? I was back in waiting mode.
At 33:04, he says, "The times where Jirard has stated that funding has occurred might be obvious miscommunications or simple misstatements. Human error."
Shut the fuck up Mr. Lawyer Man. You can't make a whole half hour lead up about why the whole thing is a huge misunderstanding and what a great position Jirard is in since he never actually did any fraud, and then just casually drop that "Oh yeah and those the times he lied about where the money had gone he probably just made a mistake and it's not a big deal." Especially since part of the defense is, well we were waiting before we actually gave the money for it to be enough to be able to do X Y Z fancy thing.
I am not a lawyer. There may be some additional explanation that clarifies why they were "obvious miscommunications." But I saw enough to satisfy my curiosity.
Mine look similar except the body is mostly “the X was doing Y, but it should’ve been doing Z” or “the docs say bla, $link”. I try to separate the individual “update A to do B” in separate commits, but sometimes it just isn’t possible.
In major cities in America, just as an example, there is often a statue against “cruising” which is usually defined as passing by the same point more than X number of times in Y span of time. These laws are ostensibly aimed at harassing the (black) “car culture” people while they’re showing off their customized vehicles in the 'hood. It’s kind of like the vehicular version of anti-loitering laws. But you could probably apply it to OP’s case if you were twisted enough.
So the sources you already sent about Russian increases in weapons production or about German relative difficulties, those are perfectly good. I wasn't saying you needed to prove that stuff again. I was saying, do you have an idea of how much total armaments NATO produces versus Russia? Total number of shells, total number of bullets, drones, things like that? You're right that dollars are a poor way of measuring it; they're just the best I could find.
Yes, I understand that Germany's economy is having some difficulties. The 0.4% number is from your source; I followed one of the links from the source you sent. I didn't pick it out to send to you; I just explored your source a little to try to find out, okay, what are we actually talking about quantitatively?
Regardless of Germany, the UK's Navy, all of that. Do you have an idea of what is the total armaments production, in a form that reflects it more accurately than dollars?
These are sales, not gifts. And they are valued at $106 million and $147 million respectively, around 1,000 times smaller than what's being proposed in the current aid package. And that was still a big deal with stories in the paper and all (the first story notes that it's the first time Biden did it).
And you think I'm drawing from the right wing playbook? Jesus Christ. You cannot concede a single point lost in the debate. You ask for sources on claims I've already sourced.
So, I do get why you think this; I think I was a little unclear. But no, I'm not trying to say you're wrong in the examples you're giving or need to send proof for the same examples again. I'm saying: If you're going to say Russia is outproducing the West in terms of weapons, what are the numbers you're claiming? For total Russian armaments produced vs. NATO armaments produced? Artillery shells or drones are a good metric if it's too complex to get a whole complete picture without falling back into measuring dollars.
You're also saying Russia's using them more effectively, which is a different discussion which is a lot more complex which I'll leave alone for right now.
Meanwhile, Russia has managed to burn through multiple waves of Ukraine's army, funded to the scale of the entire Russian military, with only a portion of its national force.
What happened in the north of the country?
are defeating Ukraine
burn through multiple waves of Ukraine's army
Let me ask you a question. If some middle eastern countries formed into a bloc, funded and armed by Russia, and NATO invaded that bloc, and then the invasion remained within 100 km of the border for 2 years, would you say that represented NATO "defeating" the mideast bloc? Because we were holding off multiple waves?
I honestly have not a ton of nationalistic feeling towards the US. I do have some, yes. Particularly what you're saying about the West being disorganized is true, although I'd much rather have that than a Russia-style "organization."
Mostly I just feel a lot for the people in Ukraine getting invaded, although the honest truth is, US troops have done the same to any number of small countries throughout the world. I'm not "proud" per se of the US if the West wins this fight, although I'll be happy if Ukrainians (and Russian conscripts, for that matter) stop dying. Mostly, I just look at the war the way I look at it, and I think Russia is the aggressor, and so I tend to be opposed to what they're doing in the same way I'm opposed to the US doing it when we're in the invader role.
You can't accuse me of crafting whatever narrative I want while simultaneously claiming I'm not contextualizing things. The narrative emerges from contextualizing things. If you think that just because the narrative is at odds with your beliefs then this means the evidence is being decontextualized, you might just have a bias that needs to be evaluated.
Oh, no doubt. The narrative arrives from details, and it's a lot more complex then just big numbers. But you get what I'm saying, that the truth doesn't come from sheer number of bullet points, but by testing your big conclusions against big objectively true things, right? That's why I keep coming back to things like "the invasion's gone on for 2 years and hasn't gone much of anywhere yet" and "NATO's industrial capacity is $X and Russia's is $Y." You can't just contextualize from details only, and then decide whatever you arrived at is true. Sometimes it will be, sometimes not. Surely that makes sense?
I was saying, do you have an idea of how much total armaments NATO produces versus Russia?
I don’t. I am using front-line armament scarcity as an indicator. It’s entirely possible that NATO/USA is not sending what it’s producing in an effort to mask its production numbers from foreign intelligence. I find that unlikely. Therefore, either NATO/USA triggered a proxy war and then withheld munitions deliberately or NATO/USA isn’t producing enough to supply active conflicts. Can you think of a third option?
The 0.4% number is from your source
It’s not the source that’s bad, it’s the way you used it. How do you not understand that?
These are sales, not gifts.
All arms transfers from the USA are sales. There are no gifts. It’s part of how the USA financially traps its “allies”. Show me an example of the USA giving weapons to anyone for free.
And they are valued at $106 million and $147 million respectively, around 1,000 times smaller than what’s being proposed in the current aid package. And that was still a big deal with stories in the paper and all (the first story notes that it’s the first time Biden did it).
It’s one order of magnitude less than you say (100MM vs 10BN). I’m not sure why the size matters. Are you saying that the President has authorization limits? Can you find them? Are you saying that the press has any real effect on how the USA distributes weapons? That if Biden had given more the press would have been worse and therefore he would have been stopped? What kind of analysis of executive power is that?
You cannot concede a single point lost in the debate
But no, I’m not trying to say you’re wrong in the examples you’re giving or need to send proof for the same examples again
That has no bearing on what concession means. Conceding a point is to say “OK, you’re correct 0.4% is of total GDP for 2022Q4 and isn’t indicative of the amount of deindustrialization happening in Germany. I was unaware of the automotive survey, of the reduced order volume, and the reduced electricity consumption. Those are valid points that indicate an active deindustrialization.”
You could then go on to say how that deindustrialization doesn’t actually matter, but you never actually concede a single point.
If you’re going to say Russia is outproducing the West in terms of weapons, what are the numbers you’re claiming?
Russia is not experiencing scarcity on the front lines. Ukraine is experiencing scarcity on the front lines. That’s it.
You’re also saying Russia’s using them more effectively, which is a different discussion which is a lot more complex which I’ll leave alone for right now.
No. I’m not saying Russia is using each artillery shell more effectively than Ukraine is using each artillery shell. I’m saying Russia’s production is aligned with its needs. Note that currently the only confirmed air-to-air kill of the F-22 in its 20 years of operation is a balloon. The USA spent $74Bn on that production line. The current F-35 program is looking to cost upwards of 1 trillion. Russia doesn’t need to outspend the USA when Russia’s production lines are producing what the Russian military actually needs. The USA’s inflated military budget is going to capitalist production - highest sale price, lowest cost to produce.
Russia has managed to burn through multiple waves of Ukraine’s army, funded to the scale of the entire Russian military, with only a portion of its national force.
What happened in the north of the country?
Russia used only a portion of its national force, lost some battles, and, if you read that Moon of Alabama article I sent you, still managed to destroy so much materiel that Ukraine needed another full army of heavy weaponry to be delivered to even continue fighting.
Let me ask you a question. If some middle eastern countries formed into a bloc, funded and armed by Russia, and NATO invaded that bloc, and then the invasion remained within 100 km of the border for 2 years, would you say that represented NATO “defeating” the mideast bloc? Because we were holding off multiple waves?
What a terribly revealing leading question. Let’s reframe it. If Russia created a transnational nuclear military and stationed nuclear capabilities in each country that joined its bloc, and it was making plans to station net new nuclear capabilities along the same border that it had used multiple times to invade, say Turkey via Bulgaria, and Turkey, a much smaller military than the entire bloc invaded Bulgaria to stop the deployment of nuclear capabilities on its border, and despite Bulgaria throwing its entire military at it backed by this transnational military sending more equipment by dollar than Turkey spends on its national military, and Turkey managed to defeat 3 full militaries worth of materiel using only a portion of its national military, would I say that represented Turkey “defeating” this transnational force?
No. Because the transnational force still stands. What I would say is that Turkey defeated Bulgaria, despite all of the bloc backing, and has demonstrated that the bloc is weak and unreliable.
Particularly what you’re saying about the West being disorganized is true, although I’d much rather have that than a Russia-style “organization.”
You don’t know what Russia-style organization even is. I’m not having this conversation with you about your feelings.
I think Russia is the aggressor, and so I tend to be opposed to what they’re doing in the same way I’m opposed to the US doing it when we’re in the invader role.
Being opposed to what their doing is not the same as debating to deny a fact-based narrative simply because admitting the truth would feel bad.
by testing your big conclusions against big objectively true things, right? That’s why I keep coming back to things like “the invasion’s gone on for 2 years and hasn’t gone much of anywhere yet” and “NATO’s industrial capacity is $X and Russia’s is $Y.” You can’t just contextualize from details only, and then decide whatever you arrived at is true. Sometimes it will be, sometimes not. Surely that makes sense?
We don’t have many objectively true things. Everything is behind a fog of war and through massive propaganda lens. We can establish some objectively true things about that propaganda, though. Many of us who have been following along with USA proxy wars called out that the USA would eventually pull support for Ukraine and that it would look a lot like what’s starting to happen now. Those weren’t guesses, they were retellings of what happened in other USA proxy wars. It’s an observable fact that the history of USA proxy wars and the current Ukraine conflict are following similar story beats. Whether I would call that objective or not is a matter of philosophy.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has gone on for 2 years and what’s happened is that the USA is pulling support, Russia’s economy is stronger than before, Russia’s alliances are stronger than before, Russian public sentiment is stronger than before while USA and Europe are all suffering economically, are losing some of their control over international trade and international politics and international propaganda, and public sentiment in USA and Europe are weaker than before.
I don’t know how you can choose to say that because of some imaginary objective that you think Russia ought to have, like it should take more territory, that therefore it’s failing and none of the other facts matter. You can keep pointing to the same dollar values I’m pointing to and drawing the conclusion that the dollar values mean that one side is faring better than the other, but you’re ignoring literally all the other facts. You’re not attempting to test against objective facts, you’re cherry picking.
