> The ability to opt-out of quote posts is also currently planned, which makes it that Mastodon’s implementation will not be compatible with other fediverse implementations of quote posting.

Not surprising. Even before ActivityPub was announced, when the was still powered by , Mastodon was already breaking compatibility. There were countless of heated debates about almost every Mastodon-only "feature" they implemented that all other Fediverse devs were forced to implement.

And here we are with yet another.

I wonder what will supporters of opt-out or anti-quotepost camp will do if the other Fediverse devs ignore this Mastodon-only "feature", and just continue with the common implementation of quote posts? Are we going to see a new reason for "fediblock", and finally fragment the Fediverse network?

‘Neural noise’ could be a hidden advantage of the autistic mind

But some research, including our own study, has explored specific advantages in autism. Studies have shown that in some cognitive tasks, autistic people perform better than allistic people.

Autistic people face ignorance, prejudice and discrimination that can harm wellbeing. Poor mental and physical health, reduced social connections and increased “camouflaging” of autistic traits are some of the negative impacts that autistic people face.

So, research underlining and investigating the strengths inherent in autism can help reduce stigma, allow autistic people to be themselves and acknowledge autistic people do not require “fixing”.

The autistic brain is different. It comes with limitations, but it also has its strengths.

How do you define the term, “Openly Autistic”?

  • Is it an autistic person who rarely masks?
  • Or, an autistic who isn't afraid and/or shy to share that they are actually autistic?
  • Or, an autistic person who is active in the autism acceptance “movement” (if we can call it that)?
  • Or, perhaps, an autistic who were interviewed and disclosed they're autistic?

Maybe you have other considerations or criteria that defines “openly autistic” for you?

NOTE: Being openly autistic is a choice and is not for everyone. I think it is safe to say that we all face discrimination, stereotyping, and prejudice for being actually autistics, thus, most choose not to be open about it.

However, recently, there has been a slow growth in numbers of openly autistics, and like with most things in life, we have different criteria, definitions, and cultural considerations.

Thus, I am curious what you think, personally or maybe your immediate environment or organisation, is an openly autistic person. Or, when do you consider one as openly autistic.

Again, this is not about if an autistic person should be openly autistic or not. ^_^

Thank you for your interesting insights!

Ahh! Good point! It doesn't have to do with unmasking; it's more about being fine and able to share it; yet still continue with our usual masking.

Hmm… like in a work environment, a supervisor, and manager may be able to help and assist us, but it requires being open to them. While for the rest of the company, we continue to mask.

Good point! Thank you for sharing!

True. It doesn't have to be everyone at work.

I think that was the mistake I did in one of my previous work. I opened up during the orientiation of the team. Months later, had a discussion about autism with a team member because his eldest brother is autistic too, and he shared to me how he thinks autism is just an excuse and a figment of our imagination. Which of course I got insulted as well.

You are right, we still need to mask, and we don't need to tell everyone.

A very good quotable: “Doesn't make me less autistic just less visible.”

I agree! I realised also after reading that, being openly autistic is not about being identified or standing out of the crowd. We share because it benefits everyone in a given situation or environment.

True. It's one of the reasons why I was curious about how everyone defined being openly autistic.

Welcome and congratulations, you've learned more about yourself. ^_^ And I'm sorry about the experiences you've had, it is true there are still a lot of discrimination, in and out of work.

If I may share, disclosing at work is 50-50. The first time I disclosed it at a new job, it didn't work well. It was either only lip service or they don't know how and what to do with the information. I tried explaining, but they really were not flexible. It's all about “by the book” and “company policy”.

In another company, they were more open and understanding, and even appreciated I disclosed it with them.

I think, at least based on my personal experience, it really comes down to the people in position if they themselves truly care. If they are willing to meet us halfway so we can work together to find a good working condition for all parties involved.

Company policies are there as a guideline only, not “the rule of law”. Unfortunately, some people in management treats it as “the law” (in the voice of Judge Dredd, haha), which in turn makes it harder for everyone, especially us who are neurodivergent.

Another factor to consider, re: disclosing at work, your local laws. If you'll gain more benefits (like tax breaks) and protection, it is something to consider. At least here in my country, if you don't disclose it, you won't be able to receive the benefits (as the employer have to ask you for documents so they can officially file it).

Hope it helps in some way. ^_^

Do you have an child?

As an autistic myself, there are some things I should have tried but did not have the courage to do so.

Thus, my personal advice, is to encourage your autistic (and NT) children to give it a try. Don't shield them because you “love them a lot”. Once they grow up, like in my experience, they will secretly always think, “I should've done this and that and see what happened, and maybe my life would be better”.

Here are some in my case:

  • Voice acting. Our teachers, my classmates, and later work colleagues, have always said I can do well in reading. They feel the emotions and get immersed in the story.

That's how far I did it. Today, I'm thinking, I should've taken a voice acting lesson, and maybe work as a voice actor.

  • Physical labour. I'm not choosy when it comes to job, especially at my current age, a job is a job. (As long as it isn't a crime and immoral, of course.) Sadly, I was shielded from it because they “love me so much and don't want me to go through what they went through in life”.

The result of that wasn't good at all. I got stuck in office and BPO for a long time, and now it is so hard to move careers. My heart is in service and “people watching”, and to this day, it is so hard to get into a hotel-type of work. They either want you to have graduated in Business Administration or Hotel & Restaurant Management courses; or can carry a 30 kg baggage. Both of which I don't have.

I had to take B.S. Mathematics and Computer Science because, well, that's what they told me… office work.

You see, your “love” and not wanting your children to go through what you went through, can be detrimental for your children. It's fine to shield them, but it is also very easy for that shielding to limit your children's future.

This is especially important for us autistics who are already experiencing discrimination at work, and prejudice against hiring an autistic.

Instead of overprotecting your children, work with them. Identify what they want and see what can be done with it. If what they want would lead to “disaster” then nudge them gently to better options. Options, plural, not “what you want”.

There are autistics who can join the workforce, and in various capacities. Encourage us and guide us, but don't be overprotective and showing only one path. It might look good at that point in time, but how about the future?

@hornedfiend @schamppu I think the game is set to medium sensitivity, or Low. There are some fitness apps with a sensitivity setting, and if you place it high, it is more accurate. The problem arises if you're just moving your phone, since it's high sensitivity, it counts those as steps. So, most apps have it at medium or Low. That's my guess at least.

I think, now that you suggested it, that was maybe their solution to keeping the sensitivity fixed for their game, but giving users a chance to earn more if they're about to engage in a long session.

Watch it first, don't skip nor drop.

You mentioned, you've only watched the first episode? In Episode 3, IIRC, it was a case about another , and she explained to her co-workers that is a spectrum.

If you judge it by its cover, you'll miss the objective of the show. They cannot possibly pack everything in a single episode just to appease the audience. 😉

Secondly. An autistic like her does exist. It is not exaggerated. You are just different from her. 🙂 Saying she's exaggerated is indirectly telling those like her as "you're exaggerating". Think about it.

Third. Many approved of that show far more than most other shows ( and ) about autism.

Fourth. The show also exposed and brought to the surface, the many discrimination, stereotypes, and prejudice, the autistic community faces daily. Even in the realm of romance.

The thing about EAW is that, the audience reaction during its run compliments the show.

For example, when EAW touched on romance, there were audiences who showed their true colours with comments like "people with mental disability should not enter into a relationship nor have kids, they'll only spread their disease", etc.

That kind of people were the target of the show, and the show made them reveal their true colours.

Fifth. The show changed lives. Not everyone, obviously, but it did. Like mine.

I used to mask a lot. I used to hide that I am autistic. But because of EAW, it gave me courage to stand against discrimination, stereotypes, and prejudices; as well as, to be . It was helpful for my mental health and identity.

I am NOT saying that those who chose to still mask are not doing anything to fight the prejudice. NO. It is a personal matter, and it depends on where you are and your culture. For me, the reason I was masking a lot was because I'm tired of the discrimination. I grew up thinking "something is wrong with me" and "this is the way to do things to be accepted by society".

So, me going open is a fight against the wrong things I personally experienced and the things wrong around me. It is deeply personal. I hope no one misinterprets me on this.

Conclusion: Was EAW perfect?

Of course it isn't. However, based on the number of productions I've seen "about autistics" and where "autistic characters were included just for the sake of including", EAW was the best so far.

The actress herself was a psychology graduate. She initially did not want to take on the role because she's fully aware how important it is to get it right, and it is impossible to appeal to autistics, after all, autism is a spectrum. There will always be "that's not how I am" or "that's not how my relative is".

They made her character a mix of various autistic characteristics. In the latter episodes, they even depicted a meltdown and shutdown, and she did a very good job. I highly applauded her for that scene.

Anyway. 😉

For EAW? I don't know. It wasn't just me that EAW resonated well. During its run, there was a lot of positive feedback about it from autistics and autistic parents. I was actually surprised because whenever autistic is depicted, it's almost always a negative feedback, but it was different for EAW.

For example, "X+Y", despite it based on a true story, it still garnered so much negative feedback. I can't even imagine what the person would have felt for his story to be dismissed like that. (Sure, the movie did use literary freedom, but to still get feedback like "autistics are not like that" and "stereotype"?)

A good read: https://www.cnbc.com/2023/02/07/neuroscientist-shares-coveted-skills-that-set-introverts-apart-their-brains-work-differently.html

To quote two:
“If your workplace is dominated by extroverts who criticize those who prefer to work alone — or skip after-work cocktails — as “not team players,” it may inadvertently alienate gifted people.”

“there is no difference in conforming responses given to high- and low-pressure levels by introverts.”

It feels like they described me. Then again, I'm an ( / ) type of autistic, so it fits.

In addition, I experienced that “not team players” from some managers from a certain company years ago. I don't join after-work cocktails, or any party, and was branded as “not a team player” by some of those in position. I was actually very glad I did not because I later found out they force people to drink, and I can't because I have (other than the fact, you can't make me drink if I don't want to).

Anyway. What about you, my fellow ? Or, are you an extrovert autistic yet still find similarities from the article and studies mentioned in it?

Good point, we have lunch for those. And if a manager thinks some socialisation is required, they also have the power to change some schedule for socialisation; or schedule a team building.

I recalled in one job, the manager eats his lunch at the same time as the subordinate he wants to socialise with. He adjusted himself instead of the employee. And in some instances, he just brings food for our team so we have a reason to be in the pantry together, and talk and relax. It was a good team (and I learned a lot from him as well).

It gets ask oftentimes why an person would choose not getting an official diagnosis.

Some clarification first:

  • “Official diagnosis” = recorded in your file (which also reflects in your government record, usually).
  • “Unofficial diagnosis” = not recorded in your file
  • “Self diagnosis” = self-diagnosis, which typically take years of study before the person comes up with their final self diagnosis.

Now back to the topic.

A common reason is: to have an option to not disclose it. Consider the following:

  • There are countries which won't allow a visitor (regardless of purpose), or a migrant, to enter without declaring someone already living there; or without a companion.
  • Jobs. While some countries require companies to have at least 1% of their workforce to be from the PWD community, they won't pick an autistic person. (Note: this is a job where the autistic person is safe, and qualified.)

Generally, if your diagnosis is “official” (it was placed on record), and a situation arises where you are obligated to declare your health and disability, you have no choice but to disclose.

But if your diagnosis is “unofficial” (not on record), then you have an option not to disclose. No record = no record. (Of course, some will find a way to justify that “you know it and you still did not disclose it”. Though ironically, if there was no incident, they won't even acknowledge your disclosure.)

There are also disadvantages to it, like not enjoying government and NGO support. For example, in the , you'll enjoy tax deductions (income tax) and discounts (public transportation, cinema, grocery, and so on).

So, yes, please remember that who chose to have their formal diagnosis as “unofficial”, they chose to have an option to not disclose. Not only that, they potentially sacrificed any benefits and support they might need later. (Don't forget, diagnosis is also expensive in many countries and still they chose not to put it on record.)

Bottom-line, don't dismiss, don't laugh, don't discriminate against who decided to have an “unofficial diagnosis” and “self diagnosis”. They have their reasons, you more likely than not are not aware of. Reasons that probably doesn't exist in your country, but an issue in theirs.

Example, mine is “unofficial”. For reasons I listed above, there is another important reason, family. (Who, ironically, I'm suspecting to be autistic as well, but is simply of the generation that will be devastated if someone is “officially” recorded as PWD mentally.) As an , is very indispensable for us. I'd rather make the sacrifice because I know I won't pass it to the next generation.

This year, I bought the entire packs/bundles of classics via as well as 1 to 7 via .

The last time I played most of these were from 1988 to 1996. One or two I played again sometime early 2000s, randomly.

I already started with and Part 1, and I'm already cheating. ROFL. I mean, the packs made it easy to cheat.

Back in the 90s, we had to use a hex editor like . We open the savegame file, search through it through the hex editor, and did our magic.

LOL.

@Lunar Ahh! Fable, Fallout, and Witcher! I miss those too. Hmm, I think they're on winter sale, I might be able to grab them as well. ^_^;;

@sub_ Yep, I'm using . I find it easier than regular . I used the files installed by GOG for Exult Linux. And true, I like the QoL features they added!

I'm not a big fan of the giant monster genre (like Godzilla) but is a good series.

I don't even know what the genre is properly called! 🤣🤣🤣

@Skavau Ahh! Thank you! I thought it was just what they're called in Japanese, not as a "genre".

Thank you for sharing!

Good Doctor ★★★★★★★☆☆☆

I'm speaking here as an person, my score is 7 out of 10.

Also note:

  • I've heard a lot of good things about this.
  • This was released 10 years ago.

Those said and considered:

  1. The show is not about the autistic person, or for that matter. Autism was only used as a literary device to create a drama, like most other shows (be it Asian or Western) where there is an autistic character.

  2. There was an excessive emphasis on "dumb", "stupid", and "idiot". Instead of it making people emphatize, it makes an audience hateful.

  3. None of them actually showed that they finally understood autism and autistic people. To the very end, it was all about "do this" and "do that" so people will accept you and respect you. Sure, this is a common problem with society, however, should they have ended it that way? People will unconsciously think that's the proper way. It is not acceptance, it is forcing an autistic person to be "neurotypical".

And yet, 박시온 (Park Shi On) said in the last episode that it hurts him more when he's trying to remove his difference. But the people around him still acted the same way to end. There's a disconnect there.

  1. The female lead is a prime example of a lover who doesn't understand a single thing about autism and autistic persons. She never showed any sign that she's doing her best to understand him, nope, instead she's doing her best to make him a "normal" person.

Yes, that's how it is in the real world. I've been in such a relationship. However, why leave it that way? She want to do things her way to the end. She will eventually get tired and quit. They will have a lot of fights. 시온 (Shi On) will just keep doing the same thing, keep quiet, say it is okay, say he is not mad, because he is always the one doing the "understanding".

What they did was to only validate that this relationship is doomed to fail instead of showing how a relationship with an autistic person can be if done properly.

  1. The entire show, it was 박시온 who did the understanding and adjustments. Basically, the show taught us that autistic people should mask, mask, mask, and mask more. That no one will accept you unless you "get over" your autism (or in other words, mask your autism).

Conclusion:

  • While it did show the discrimination, stereotype, and prejudices against autistic people.
  • While it did capture the traits and quirks of an autistic person well.
  • I cannot recommend this show at all because it does more damage than in helping the autistic cause.

If I watched this when it was released in 2013, yes, I would say the same thing and rate it similarly. I'm sorry.

Just watch 이상한 변호사 우영우 (Extraordinary Attorney Woo).

A very good from .

I am still a little different from other people.
I speak and act a little differently.
So I tried very, very hard to eliminate the differences, but I couldn't do it.
The more I tried, the more it hurt.
So I thought I'd always be different until the day I die.

But many nice people filled in the gap for me.
And that is how I am standing before you today.
Thank you for filling in the gap.
Thank you for not avoiding me.
And thank you very, very much for your love.

~ 박시온 (Park Shi On), 「굿 닥터」 (「Good Doctor」).
