Not just American history, the Bible is the absolute cornerstone of our entire culture. As the one book that every household owned for much of recorded history, the amount of biblical references and reused stories is ridiculous.
I have absolutely no problem with the Bible being taught in schools as it’s an incredibly important document. I find it odd that it isn’t, because the separation of church and state shouldn’t prohibit the study of old books in any way.
I was talking about this with my wife who came from Taiwan at 16 and was sort of second hand exposed to Western culture. She said everything can’t be a bible story can it? I dug out a Bible off the shelf and flipped through, well you know David and Goliath, you know Samson, Jonah and the whale yeah these are classics right?
She says no, so I ask if she knows the story of Pinocchio or why her luggage was made by “Samsonite”. And the truck that we saw yesterday with the “G0L1ATH” license plate?

Spiderman 64 starts off exactly how you describe the game you remember. There is a tutorial, you stop a bank robbery, and then you have to save J Jonah Jameson by fighting Scorpion. Looked up some videos of the Scorpion fight, but it doesn’t look like he has a grab attack.
It was released on the Nintendo 64 in 2000. Not sure how different the ports are, but the game was ported to the PC in 2001, and to Mac in 2002.
The uncertain, unsettled condition of this science of Cetology is in the very vestibule attested by the fact, that in some quarters it still remains a moot point whether a whale be a fish. In his System of Nature, A.D. 1776, Linnaeus declares, “I hereby separate the whales from the fish.” But of my own knowledge, I know that down to the year 1850, sharks and shad, alewives and herring, against Linnaeus’s express edict, were still found dividing the possession of the same seas with the Leviathan.
The grounds upon which Linnaeus would fain have banished the whales from the waters, he states as follows: “On account of their warm bilocular heart, their lungs, their moveable eyelids, their hollow ears, penem intrantem feminam mammis lactantem,” and finally, “ex lege naturae jure meritoque.” I submitted all this to my friends Simeon Macey and Charley Coffin, of Nantucket, both messmates of mine in a certain voyage, and they united in the opinion that the reasons set forth were altogether insufficient. Charley profanely hinted they were humbug.
Be it known that, waiving all argument, I take the good old fashioned ground that the whale is a fish, and call upon holy Jonah to back me.
It’s easy to get the impression that Discord chat messages are ephemeral, especially across different public servers, where lines fly upward at a near-unreadable pace.
Joseph Cox at 404 Media confirmed that Spy Pet, a service that sells access to a database of purportedly 3 billion Discord messages, offers data “credits” to customers who pay in bitcoin, ethereum, or other cryptocurrency.
Searching individual users will reveal the servers that Spy Pet can track them across, a raw and exportable table of their messages, and connected accounts, such as GitHub.
As Cox notes, Discord doesn’t make messages inside server channels, like blog posts or unlocked social media feeds, easy to publicly access and search.
As noted by 404 Media and confirmed by Ars, clicking on the “Request Removal” link plays a clip of J. Jonah Jameson from Spider-Man (the Tobey Maguire/Sam Raimi version) laughing at the idea of advance payment before an abrupt “You’re serious?”
Those who haven’t paid for message access can only see fairly benign public-facing elements, like stickers, emojis, and charted member totals over time.

Yes, all the info is already public in a way – Discord is kinda like IRC on steroids – and it’s a reminder that it’s not impossible to gather up all this chatter using bots for various purposes (if not surveillance then training AI models.)
Each known user has a profile, which contains all known aliases, pronouns, connected accounts to other platforms such as Steam and GitHub, Discord servers joined, and public messages.
As a side note, the footer of Spy.pet has some interesting content, such as a link to a video of TempleOS developer Terry Davis dancing, a “Transparency” page that just says the word “transparency,” and a link to the “Request Removal” page that actually just plays the meme clip of newspaper editor J. Jonah Jameson laughing at Peter Parker in the 2004 movie Spider-Man 2.
Speaking of which, Spy.pet has a potentially interesting interpretation of the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), as pointed out by the Stack Diary blog this week.
The US FTC also doesn’t take the harvesting and selling of children’s data lightly, as it just opened a lawsuit against Meta in November on this topic.

@bookstodon My #review of Whalefall by Daniel Kraus is now live! Was expecting a The Martian-esque thriller, but instead got something that aligns more with The Book of Jonah in a very interesting and rather unexpected way.
Ok, well TS has been roasted over this.
Who is next?
The roasters have shown billionaires are carbon spewing POS.
Theyve shown musics favourite isnt innocent of this, nor immune to scruitiny.
Targeting a politician isnt worthwhile, unless its a super hypocritical action (like greta taking private jets).
I guess a movie star? Someone from “dont look up”, a parable for climate change denial? Hits the hypocrytical stance. Plenty of celebs in that.
Cant target J-Law, cause she is a woman (and thats unnaceptable to you).
Leo is already known as an oddity (what with never dating anyone older than 24).
So, Jonah Hill i guess?
Could try Rob Morgan. Hes black, i dunno how that fits into your prejudice of who can and cant be targetted.
Altho, they are only the actors. Maybe better to go after the writer/director/producer Adam McKay. Hes white, in his 50s, has had a successful career. Sounds perfect

You can say that Mariah Carey’s sing is well produced, but I heard her version of Auld Lang Syne yesterday and it actually made me want to smash my TV and commit a hate crime
@theautisticcoach@actuallyautistic I concur! 😀 I'm obsessed with Judaism and Jewish history as a whole, but especially praying in Hebrew (and the Hebrew language specifically). I love the ways Jewish theology plays with its sacred texts, and how argument is central to finding the truth. As for the Hebrew Bible - whew! The Song of Songs and its ancient erotica. Jonah and its deadly serious humor. The theme of creation, especially in Genesis, Psalms, Job, and some of the prophets. I could go on and on. (Full disclosure, I am a Christian from an interreligious family, and have been a member of an extremely welcoming Reform synagogue for the past 5 years. It's my faith community now.)
Of those, I’ve read: Your Code Name is Jonah, Inside UFO 54-40, The Forbidden Castle, Underground Kingdom, Space Patrol, The Phantom Submarine, War With the Evil Power Master (my favorite), and Return to Atlantis. I loved those books.
It really depends on the actor. I think we can all agree that not every actor has the same emotional maturity and therefore will not all react the same to it. For example, take a look at what Jonah Hill expects from his partners versus Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively seeming to be a healthy couple while both have had some raunchy scenes in movies featuring other people.
Jonah Hill really is a piece of shit. I’m glad my gut instinct was to fall into a bottomless pit of cringe every time he appears on screen. I could never stand that fat little toad.
