As a sysadmin I have so many devs asking me to set up antivirus exceptions for their apps, disable UAC, run the service as full admin, etc

Hell no. Submit your shit to virus total and learn how to program.

mofongo ,

Windows defender ist a Little jumpy though when I comes to self compiled software other than Visual Studio‘s

r00ty Admin ,
r00ty avatar

Nah, the heuristics shit picks up a shedload of nothing as dodgy sometimes. No-one submits work in progress stuff to be accepted with the antivirus providers to bypass that. Only final versions.

Don't have a problem where I work. Likely the choice of antivirus, or they're whitelisting our development folders automatically.

bamboo ,

Antivirus programs are way too inaccurate to be used authoritatively, especially for developers. It’s not uncommon that some virus will use a well-known open source library or packaging tool, and then the antivirus decides that any binary with that same library or stub from that packaging tool must also be a virus. When your program depends on it, if you can’t turn the AV off or make an exception, you’re just fucked. Also, programming is an iterative process. Make a small change, test, repeat. Requiring that developers upload and wait for a scan from some third party for software that they compiled locally and have no intent to distribute is a giant waste of everybody’s time, especially the developer’s. It’s a huge drag on productivity for the sake of bureaucracy.

hemko ,

I’m quite sure the guy above is not talking about devtest environment, but production deployments…

Limonene ,

Why is the antivirus software detecting my Cortex-M3 binaries as dangerous to an amd64 computer? Happens on Windows 7 through Windows 10, across 3 different employers.

And how do I submit my builds to Virus Total if they’re getting deleted as soon as they come out of the linker?

tyler ,

You clearly don’t know how programming works. Or how idiotic most antivirus software is.

Brkdncr ,

When apps have code obfuscation in use, injects into dlls, and has detection for when running in a vm when it has no business doing any of these things then yes I think I can complain to the devs about it.

sabreW4K3 , in Junior Dev VS Senior Dev

Why is this being downvoted? Doesn’t it make sense that senior developers spend more time sending emails than staying up through the night writing code?

MajorHavoc , (edited )

Junior devs leave everything in dark bright mode. Senior devs have learned to protect their eyes… While doing nothing but email and meetings…

Edit: Fix word swap. I’m not one of those crazy light mode users, I swear.

agressivelyPassive ,

Depends. If you’re working in a well lit environment, like you should, dark screens are harder to read.

And if you’ve got astigmatism, like you shouldn’t, the color-on-black contrast is really hard to read.

keyez ,

I have crazy bad astigmatism and work in a bright room and still cannot stand light mode on anything

Shareni ,

Use dark mode in sunlight for a few hours and then tell me how it’s good for you.

sxan ,
@sxan@midwest.social avatar

A senior dev writes a program to generate her email.

I have actually done this, and for more than just automated responses. It was before ChatGPT, though; now, I’d be surprised if even junior devs aren’t doing it.

CI / CD baby, every autosave my build pipeline clones my email, transpiles it into more easily understood archaic English and then sends a copy to the intended recipient while kicking off a chron job to send an automated follow up email to them and everyone they’re contacts with 2 hours from commit time.

most backlit keyboards let you disable the lighting, and have fairly legible legends without to begin with.

Or you can just touch type like me. Thats what i do with my wireless keyb, i have the backlight if i need it though.

I’m also oldish. But man, I freaking love lights. Of all kinds. I just love making shit out of lights or doing weird things. LEDs and neopixels are amazing. I have permanently installed lights on the house, and entire (small) room in the house dedicated for a honelab with RGB everywhere. It’s cool as shit (to me).

But not on my work systems. That would be really annoying. Soft lights and elegant design for me.

Croquette ,

To me, RGB is like a cheap car with a bad paint job and too many neon. If I could put my computer in a closet, I would.

KillingTimeItself ,

just wait until you rice your distro, then you become a middle aged father who lusts after vintage cars.

EpeeGnome ,

I work at a small computer shop and I love putting all those RGB lights in for people. Especially when I can do a full aRGB setup with a SignalRGB layout so patterns can move across the whole machine. For my own computer the only lights are the tiny power and hard drive activity lights, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. RGB lights belong only in other people’s computers.

@Kyatto@leminal.space avatar

Simultaneously the worst and funniest feeling, is searching for a solution and most of the responses/results are to go search for it. If your answer is that searching for an answer is an easy and quick solution, you contribute to disproving yourself.

MicrowavedTea , in I just ask my problem bro...chill....

Especially useful when the specific thread is now the first result on Google.

FizzyOrange ,

Yeah this is one of the main reasons why Stackoverflow’s question closing policies are bullshit. We’re going to close the question so nobody can answer it… but they can still upvote it and it will still be ranked highly on Google!

Bunch of idiots.

You know the SO Devs actually tried to improve this a while ago - I think you would be able to reopen your question once or something. Of course the power-hungry mods hated that idea and the abandoned it.

At this point it’s unfixable. They depend on their unpaid mods and they’ve already attracted the sort of people you absolutely don’t want to moderate a site.

The only hack I’ve found is that if your question gets downvoted/closed you are allowed to delete it, wait half an hour and ask it again. Much better odds of success than editing the question.

Corbin ,

You can help by gaining points on multiple SE sites and participating in elections. Please vote!

FizzyOrange ,

You can’t. The kinds of people who are nominated are the wrong kinds of people. I’ve participated in many SO elections and none of the candidates ever mention any of these issues.

Reminds me of the woman that got a fine for “driving in a bus lane” here in the UK. When she looked at the attached image on the fine it was of a woman walking in the street of a town she’d never been to. On that woman’s jumper was lettering that closely resembled her plates.

Made me think I could attach a sheet of card with the plate details of some arsehole I disliked, ride a bicycle down the bus lane and see if they start complaining about being fined. 😅

Counterpoint: A declarative language made and used to program a browser is still a programming language, regardless of its name, heritage, or differences from imperative languages.

Even wikipedia hints at this with a hello world program.

silasmariner ,

Hypertext markup Language. Yeah this sorta reminds me of why I stopped following r/ProgrammerHumour on the old site - too many cheap potshots at Perl, PHP and HTML, as if they weren’t fantastic tools that powered the creation of the internet we have today. Kids, man, SMH

amanaftermidnight ,

Markup language ≠ programming language.
Markups produce layout, not code.
Typesetting (the Gutenberg way) produce books, not run the looms.

silasmariner ,

Well l take your point, but here I took ‘programming language’ in the colloquial sense to mean ‘language used for programming’ whereas you seem to have read it as ‘turing-complete language’; neither is fully justifiable since there’s ambiguity, but given that it’s a crossword I think that’s fine and all part of the game.

tatterdemalion ,
@tatterdemalion@programming.dev avatar

Define “program”

Shareni ,

Can it manipulate data, does it have logic? Those are the only factors, it doesn’t even need to be Turing complete.

You can write a composition and play it through the browser, but that doesn’t mean your notes are a programming language.
