The unfortunate thing in North Carolina is that the right wing only has the necessary votes because a democrat switched parties after being elected. So now republicans can do whatever they want.
"Look I know I called all these people groomers, which is a pretty serious accusation, and then used the power of the state that I run to strip them of some of the privileges they have, and explicitly said that I did that because they said something I don’t like, but this is bumming me out can you just drop it? "
Crime stats are easy to juke. I haven’t dived into these numbers. Got a degree in criminology though, heavy focus on stats and program evaluation.
I note that the largest social and economic disruption in US history began three years ago and obviously crime was gonna go up after that. I find it more useful to compare present stats to early to pre-2020 numbers. And generally, I’m just not impressed by slight increases with an obvious cause. Especially when they are offered as evidence by people with no sincere interest in reducing crime, such as people advocating for more police, more prisons, three strikes laws, mandatory minimums, truth in sentencing laws, asset forfeiture, disenfranchisement, incarceration cost restitution, or other such “tough on crime” “law and order” bullshit, which obviously cause more poverty and familial and community instability, and thereby serve only to cause more crime. Anyway that’s my rant.
the county attorney said he had asked a court to withdraw the warrant he sought last week for alleged identity theft and unlawful use of a computer.
just want to add two bits of context to this lovely little glossing-over statement:
First off, to get a search warrant, you need to submit a sworn affidavit of probable cause, which generally gives a chronological list of facts that support the probably cause. The "probable cause affidavit" for this search warrant didn't do that. In fact, it was essentially just a copy of the search warrant itself.
Secondly, the District Attorney's brother owns the hotel that the restaurant is in. If the restaurant gets it's (very lucrative) liquor license approved, the brother can raise the rent by a nice amount.
More fun : the judge that approved it had 2 DUIs in 2 different counties in 2012. She blew off her deferment, and apprently the first DUI was not taken into account for the punishment during the 2nd.
She was of course a local elected prosecutor running on a GOP ticket, and friends to local judges at the time. The second dui happened in a judges car. She was appointed to this role in January, and no one will say if they knew about the DUIs, as legally required.
Did they do anything about the cartridges yet? Some printers detect when cartridges have been refilled by the user and are programmed to stop working then. That’s not just with HP printers, but across the board. Even at consumer level, the prices of a cartridge is criminal compared to a bottle of inkjet ink, with enough for many dozen refills.

This is absurd. I would like to hear how this benefits the consumer without attempting to talk about “quality” or something. This would be like my car not starting cause I didn’t use Shell gas.
What’s more upsetting is that printers are client side all the way. There is nothing about them that needs to reach out to the Internet to print pages. The printer itself handles the “letting you print.” So the thing sitting on your desk, that you own, is choosing this for you.

My immediate question is: what warrant in the first place?
I thought the county records office said no warrant or other reports from the magistrate had been filed there, meaning everything done by the police and others was illegal.
They had the warrant, and the paper got a copy of it in the original search. What they couldn't "find" was the sworn affidavit that listed the facts that gave enough probable cause for the search warrant. Except that it turns out that they have "found" it - except it's essentially just a copy-and-paste if the search warrant itself, which is undoubtedly why they're asking for it to be pulled.
However, I have every faith that in the five days they've had the computers, that the police chief has gone through them and gotten the identities of the multiple people who were reporting sexual assault allegations against him.
Oh, and the bar owner got her liquor license approved, so she can make a lot more money now. Which means that the hotel her restaurant is in can raise her rent, which is nice for the hotel owner. And the hotel owner just ever so casually happens to be the District Attorney ....
So wait, even if I would use just the scanner from the device and not for copying purposes, it’ll still not work because of ink levels? If so, that is absolute bullshit.
Besides, I have lost faith in all-in-one devices. If one of them breaks, the rest of it goes too. And this is just a customer nightmare realized for HP to treat their devices in this fashion.
Yes. Canon did this shit to me a decade+ ago. Had to go to the store late at night to buy yellow ink so I could scan a goddamned document I needed to send out. Haven’t given them another dollar since.
Happened to me in Summer 2020 after printing maybe 100 total pages on a printer I’d owned for two months.
I kept getting emails about the HP subscription program and then my basically new printer inexplicably stopped working. I assumed HP bricked it and, as much as I hated to, tossed it out and told myself I was never buying their product again. Luckily the KC public library has free black and white printing anyway.
