just_change_it , in US expands probe into Ford engine failures to include two motors and nearly 709,000 vehicles

They are not including any electric motors. They have included two more Internal Combustion Engines.

Important to make these distinctions in the age of ICE, Hybrid and EVs being common. People don’t really know the difference usually but motors are usually a lot less prone to failure than engines. Explosions aren’t healthy!

Shikadi ,

Engines are a type of motor

just_change_it ,

I don’t think everyone agrees with that statement. www.kia.com/dm/…/is-an-engine-a-motor.html

In the United States, it’s called the department of motor vehicles. It would be pretty weird if almost all motor vehicles lacked motors.

KIA may not agree with that, but they’re also wrong. www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/motor

I’m in my 50s and the Engine vs Motor debate has been raging for longer than I’ve been around.

Now if you’ll excuse me I need to put some motor oil in my motorcycle so I can ride it over to the Department of Motor Vehicles and get it registered. I’m taking it to compete in some motorsports this weekend and it needs to be street legal.

just_change_it , (edited )

Find me a DC Electric Engine sold as a part from GM, Ford, Toyota, BMW, Honda, Tesla, Chevrolet, Volkswagen, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Porsche, Buick, Renault, Mazda, Bentley, Kia, Chrysler, Jeep, Audi or Subaru. I bet every car with one from the last 30 years is going to call it a DC Electric motor.

We’re not talking about the usage of Motor and how it’s been used with other words to describe all manner of things from locomotives to motels. We’re talking about the Engines and Motors that power vehicles themselves.

Anything less is just motorboating for the sake of enjoyment, and who doesn’t like a good motorboat? It’s just off topic is all.

Next you’re going to tell me that Cars aren’t just a shortened version of Horseless Carriage.

Oh and btw, when you look for “motoroil” the listings are all Engine Oil… guess the terminology has changed since our great grandparents. www.autozone.com/…/engine-oil

Shikadi ,

All gas/diesel engines are motors, both by dictionary definition and colloquially. Nobody calls an electric motor a DC engine, but that has nothing to do with gas engines regularly being called motors.

reversebananimals , in Abercrombie and Fitch ex-CEO accused of exploiting men for sex

I worked at an Abercrombie in college and it was just as exploitative as it sounds. We had to wear Abercrombie-only clothing to work and… you guessed it - they didn’t provide it. We had to buy it. As if that weren’t bad enough, it had to be “in season”, which meant they forced us to buy a new outfit every quarter for the priviledge to work minimum wage retail. They claimed we could choose instead to wear “equivalent” clothing if we didn’t want to pay. I once wore reef leather flip flops and they made me cut the 1cm rubber tags off before letting me on the floor.

They ended up getting sued for this practice and about 10 years later I got a settlement check for $7.

I have plenty of other crazy blood boiling stories from that job.

    reversebananimals ,

Sure - so the way they hired was completely discriminatory.

They wanted to hire people based on looks so customers would only see attractive white people working there and maybe one token of each other race. But thats completely illegal. So they got around this by recruiting people on the street.

They’d send someone onto the streets of NYC to walk up to people they wanted and offer them jobs. They’d also list the positions, but would auto-decline anyone who applied. That way they could pick the looks they wanted and show everyone who tried to apply and didn’t “fit” the door.

The managers were also insane. Most had drunk the Kool Aid and were so obsessed with Abercrombie they genuinely believed that being a retail store manager was something exclusive to be proud of. They expected the same attitude from everyone. They would invite employees to drink after work and then note who didn’t wear Abercrombie outside of work, then give them the worst shifts.

They also threatened to fire me multiple times for going off script - saying things like “hi” to customers instead of “hey how’s it going?” One time an exec came in with a suitcase. I was on greeter duty and thought they were a customer so I tried to engage and ask about their travel. They wordlessly stared daggers at me then went straight to the manager to have me fired. No idea why I wasn’t, but they acted like they had just saved my life by letting me keep my crappy retail job.

That was one of those jobs where I didn’t quit, I just stopped showing up.

Correct. Philly has over 5x the per-capita homicide rate as the nation as a whole. The city has a high crime rate.

    Per-capita homicide rates:

    prole ,

Bad faith, and your links prove it. Comparing apples to oranges and manipulating data to suit yourself. Your first link goes to the wiki for “crime in the United States.”

Look at any (legitimate) source that breaks down the top most violent cities in the US, and see where Philly is on that list. Here’s one (based on FBI crime statistics): worldpopulationreview.com/…/most-violent-cities-i…

Hmmm that’s weird, I don’t see Philadelphia at all… Baltimore is the only city I see on there that’s in the Northeast. Huh.

Most of the cities in the top 20 are southern or Midwestern cities. Red cities and/or cities in red states.

    BombOmOm ,
    @BombOmOm@lemmy.world avatar

My 2nd link is a Wikipedia list of cities by homicide rate, and Philadelphia is on it with a homicide rate 32.74. Did you even click the link?

As I said earlier, Philadelphia has over 5x the homicide rate as the US as a whole (a rate of 6.5). Philadelphia has a high crime rate.

    bobman ,

Can agree. Me and 4 of my friends all had our cars broken into in Houston.

None of us reported it because we felt like there would be no point.

    prole ,

Do you know what “per capita” means? And no, it’s not just a fancy word to make liberals’ statistics look good (yes, I’ve argued with someone who said that).

Why don’t you take a good honest look at a map of the homicide rate per capita and learn something.

If one were to assume you are actually correct about that number (which I don’t, I don’t buy it)… Over 3x the homicide, and over 1000x the people on average. Are you capable of understanding that basic math, or…?

    Kolrami ,

    ibb.co/ccBKjrd

This Wikipedia article visually shows the per capita homicide rate and it’s not anywhere near as extreme as the other dude implied. …wikipedia.org/…/List_of_U.S._states_and_territor…

It might not have been malicious though, because I see a lot of professional outlets talk about total numbers when per capita is more relevant.

The crime rates are only the downtown city of St. Louis which due to STL’s unique political city/county split makes it an inaccurate comparison to every other city in the nation. Combine our county of city of St. Louis and St. Louis county together, and we’re not as bad as everyone makes us out to be. Every other city gets to use their full city metro area, both they love using St. Louis as a boogeyman because we’re split differently and they can count only the city downtown area for crime

Says who? I checked the FBI crime statistics. and they have rows for the STL MSA for 2016, 2017, and 2018, though not in the latest one from 2019, probably because they didn’t report the numbers to the FBI.

So, what causes crime to rise? What solutions do you offer?

    Not_Alec_Baldwin ,

Reduce wealth and income inequality somehow. There’s been no research on UBI reducing crime afaik and honestly I don’t know that it would work for that. People need to feel like they are doing valuable work.

Cops on foot patrol in neighborhoods NOT to punish anyone but literally just to get to know the community and make eye contact.

Access to training and education to promote moving into higher income and responsibility jobs.

Mental health support (although people won’t want help as long as they are Fighting against the system)

There need to be healthy, organic, non-crime non-drug non-gang groups for people to be part of. I don’t know what is are into these days. Basketball? Dancing on Tiktok? Anything social.

    fosforus ,

Reduce wealth and income inequality somehow.

That’s not the whole story. Singapore is one of the safest countries in the world, and it has one of the highest gini coefficients (i.e. largest income inequality) in the world.

You can also get executed for having weed.

    fosforus ,

    PunnyName ,

    fosforus , (edited )

If you believe the data, apparently. I’m guessing you don’t believe the data. I’m not for even scolding people for possessing or using any drugs, personally, but this doesn’t seem to be necessarily at odds with safety.

    Not_Alec_Baldwin ,

IIRC Singapore has a very specific and controlling demographic control system? Like regions have to have demographic breakdowns that approximate the national numbers or something?

There are a bunch of social engineering things you can do to reduce crime. But good luck trying to tell Americans where they can and can’t move. Probably easier to just tax the super rich.

    prole ,

More people means more crime. On the aggregate.

This person is ignoring the fact that per capita statistics are what’s relevant here. And those are very clear. People like this just pretend they don’t exist because it literally shows the opposite is true. That red, conservative, rural areas have far more violent crime and murder per capita.

    pete_the_cat ,

Yeah, I grew up in South Jersey, about an hour SE and there’s at least one news story about a murder that happened somewhere in Philly each night. Sometimes multiple separate shootings. Most of Philly is a shit hole.

    Let that sink in.

He accused a teen interested in an age-appropriate partner of being a pedophile. The age difference between the people that killed Lee, and the ‘victim’ Lee was pretending to be online is, at most, 4 years.

Fuck that dude. That kind of accusation wrecks lives.

    Cethin ,

And as an adult man posing as a young girl, how can you possibly pose as specifically 15? Do you wear a sign with your age? I would bet he looked much older than 15. He probably looked older than these teens, because he was older than them. I don’t understand how you can be called a pedophile by being attracted to an adult man in women’s clothing unless he’s broadcasting his fake age somehow.

SheeEttin , in US health officials propose using a cheap antibiotic as a ‘morning-after pill’ against STDs

I thought we were supposed to be more restrictive with antibiotics, not less.

    LastYearsPumpkin ,

My gut reaction says the same thing. Often taking a heavy handed approach and completely knocking out a disease before it can take a foothold would prevent it from being able to mutate a resistance.

It could be (which would need to be backed up by proper studies and science, which hopefully this decision is based on) that early usage of doxycycline would be better than the alternative, which is letting the disease take hold, then trying to eliminate it after the fact.

I assume, like the morning after pill, this would be intended to be used in rare cases of unintended infection, and not as a common prophylactic. Such as in SA, or one off broken condom situations, or when someone is discovered to have an STD shortly after sexual contact.

    NotMyOldRedditName ,

Unless an antibiotic is incredibly specific to the target, it’s still going to kill other bacteria in your body. Those bacteria can become more and more resistant, and then those newly resistant bacteria can pass it on to more harmful bacteria.

So we should be trying to reduce it either way.
