AA5B , in Auto loans could pose a bigger threat to young Americans than student loans. For the first time, the outstanding volume of auto loan debt just surpassed student loan debt.

Certainly car loans can be predatory, and it is worth improving oversight, limiting what loan providers are allowed to offer. While I’ve seen plenty of people in trouble with car loans, it was always predictable/likely and my first thought had been how could a loan provider have approved that. I’m sorry if people are desperate for transportation and short of options but it’s not helpful to offer rates like credit cards, nor roll over previous loans, nor offer loans at high percentages of people’s incomes

I posted this story in politics from another source a few days ago and it was removed because apparently the source wasn’t good enough and people couldn’t find it anywhere else. It was the only source reporting it at the time, but ok then.

edit: guess it was farther back than I remember, here’s that article from ~3 weeks ago

Did he want a jury trial?

Sylver ,

Yes, because they fully believe that 40% of the nation would exonerate him. So they want jury trials to be stacked with loyalists. There is also the possibility that they want to know who will make the decision so they can be coerced.

CobblerScholar ,

Dude just literally put a mafia style “make him an offer he can’t refuse” hit on a 4 star general in our armed forces. With no consequences.

dhork ,

It depends on where the jury pool comes from. I doubt that 4 people in Manhattan or Brooklyn would want to exonerate him, much less 40%. But if they can pull from Staten Island as well, his chances of finding at least one goober who would be willing to ignore the facts and exonerate him get larger.

Cheesus ,

Long trials tend to have a large jury pool to select from. I was recently in the pool for a 7 week trial in Oakland and there were 150 of us to choose from. The defense just needs to find 4 Republicans to get into the jury and the case is over. You would assume a staunch Republican would try hard to get on the jury to help protect trump.

dhork ,

I think you underestimate how much New Yorkers (Particularly NYC) loathe Trump. Brooklyn and Queens saw something insane like 75% of the vote go to Biden, in Manhattan and then Bronx it was closer to 85%. And we can’t assume the remaining 15% are full MAGA, either, they may have just not liked Biden but were ambivalent to Trump.

Staten Island is where NYC keeps its Conservatives, it went for Trump 52 to 42.

Shocked. I’m shocked.

His lawyers probably didn’t expect to juggle a dozen trials at the same time. That, and, no one even halfway competent would ever work for Trump. Most of his previous attorneys are codefendants in his criminal trials at this point.

Almost everything we think of as Greek innovations was actually the Greeks absorbing knowledge from the civilizations to their east. Greece is just when our records traditionally went back to.

ICastFist ,
@ICastFist@programming.dev avatar

Not to mention that a lot of greek texts that survived only did so thanks to the Sassanids (Persians), since the newly christian Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantine) began purging all that stuff because “god is all the knowledge you need”.

Later on, those texts found their way back into Europe through the then Arab conquered Spain

RunawayFixer ,

A quick Google search shows that this is entirely incorrect (both that they were only preserved in arabic and that they made it back to Europe through al-andalus) and it’s apparently a popular myth.

From multiple articles (there’s a plethora of sources): Classical Greek texts were preserved in the byzantine empire and most classical Greek texts that are known today, are translations from texts that were preserved in Greek (mostly within the byzantine empire). There are a few texts that only survived for a time as Arabic translations, but according to what I read, those are only few compared to what was preserved in Greek.

ICastFist ,
@ICastFist@programming.dev avatar

Huh, I’ll have to look further into that, then

RunawayFixer ,

Much appreciated that you take it this way. This is a breath of fresh air compared to late stage reddit.

PhlubbaDubba ,

IIRC the real situation was that classical texts were traditionally kept away from most public eyes because they were written by pagans, but trusted scholars and religious officials would usually be able to gain access to them if they needed.
