jeffw , in Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin's administration is sending out tax rebates during election week
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

The checks, according to Virginia residents who have received them in the mail, are being sent with a note that specifically credits Youngkin for the money, telling the taxpayer they are “receiving this rebate because Governor Glenn Youngkin recently signed a bill passed by the 2023 Virginia General Assembly.”

That’s pretty terrible

Poayjay ,

Just like the letter I got from trump with my pitiful little stimulus check. Did the asshole have the nerve to sign the checks too?

tacosplease ,

Was surprised to see he did not sign the checks.

tacosplease ,

Was pissed when I got mine. The letter did not name or provide any details about the bill. Just - here’s $200 because of Glen Youngkin. I should donate it to a Democrat in a swing district.

bstix , in Target CEO says shoppers are pulling back, even on groceries

Shoppers are quiet quitting. Nobody wants to shop anymore

S_204 ,

I grocery shop with the app now. It costs $100/yr including delivery. I don’t have to step foot in the store and I can track my spending to the dollar so I’ve saved more than the app costs just by avoiding impulse purchases.

If I don’t like the produce they send, I reject it at the door and they replace it.

It’s pretty sweet for us and is saving a bunch of time and money.

TheSanSabaSongbird ,

It’s “set foot” goddammit, not “step foot.” I fucking hate that. Never do it again.

S_204 ,

Thanks for inspiring my increased usage of the term.

Watching shoe company gouge CHILDREN by marketing and selling them running shoes for 500 dollars kinda turned me off from ever wanting to give those companies money ever again.

bstix ,

Barefoot running is it then.

Kidding aside, kids do need good shoes, but they’ll also need new shoes every 6 months or more, so $500 is definitely out of the question for most parents.

It must be a signal product or something. Quite frankly I don’t mind those, because it only steals money from dumb rich people. If I were to start a business that’d be my segment too. It’s easier to find 10 customers willing to pay a $1000 for a bag of shit than it is to find 1000 customers willing to pay $10 for the same bag of shit.

KneeTitts ,
@KneeTitts@lemmy.world avatar

Quite frankly I don’t mind those, because it only steals money from dumb rich people

Oh no I think you’ll find that most of the people that are targeted by this type of predatory marketing are not rich, some are, but most are just taking money away from other essentials to try and get that thing that the multi-million dollar marketing campaign told them they must have

bstix ,

You’re right. Most customers for those kinds of products are only pretending to be rich. The suburban BMW/Audi segment. Actual rich people don’t buy those things.

TenderfootGungi ,

That is really close to the tax rate we used to reduce inequality coming out of the Great Depression. In today’s dollars the threshold would lie in a few million, not one. And I believe it was 94% IIRC, but over 90. Of course nobody paid that in practice thanks to deductions, but it worked.

gravitas_deficiency , in Canada Will Legalize Medically Assisted Dying For People Addicted to Drugs

Wow that’s… actually kinda fucked.

dangblingus ,

It’s Canada. We aren’t the smiling plucky canucks that the international community thinks we are. We’re tired, boss. We have some of the worst incidence rates for opioid addiction in the world, the most expensive real estate, politicians that actually don’t do anything except self-deal and play culture war games, a massive overpopulation crisis, a jobs crisis, a grocery cost crisis (all told, they call it a cost of living crisis). They literally invented MAID so that people with terminal cancer can take the painless path out, but now it’s being discussed for literally anyone who is feeling mentally unwell.

elscallr ,
@elscallr@lemmy.world avatar

They literally invented MAID so that people with terminal cancer can take the painless path out, but now it’s being discussed for literally anyone who is feeling mentally unwell.

The people opposed to medically assisted death used this as an argument against it. I disagreed with them, didn’t expect that to really happen.

I still don’t disagree with its use here. If a person’s life is not their own to take then they have no autonomy at all, but still… it’s jarring to see it actually being used this way.

Tranus ,

If a person’s life is not their own to take then they have no autonomy at all

That’s just not right. Autonomy isn’t some absolute, all or nothing thing. If it was, then everybody would have “no autonomy at all”, because we’re not allowed to commit crimes.

Of the full range of possible actions, killing yourself is a relatively small portion of those. Considering that death eliminates all possible future actions, I’d argue that preventing a suicide (of a person that’s not dying anyway) actually preserves more autonomy than the alternative.

Gabu ,

You’re just arguing out of an emotional position and trying to rationalize it. If a person wants to die, it’s their right to be able to do so. That doesn’t mean society should just say “fuck it” instead of providing proper mental care, however.

jasory ,

“You’re just arguing out of an emotional position”

So where did they make an emotional argument?

“It’s their right to be able to do so”

And here you are inventing positive rights!

Where does this right to any action come from? If you are paraplegic do you have a right to walk? How would this right be granted? Do you have a right to psychically expel your kidneys (an apparently impossible task)?

The fact that you are unable to perform an action does not entail that others must perform it for you.

Gabu ,

A cursory glance at your post history tells me more than enough to know I should just ignore you.

pinkdrunkenelephants ,

Yes it is and not being allowed to harm innocent people isn’t a violation of your autonomy and never was. Grow the fuck up.

Mokujin , in Tesla cuts Model 3 and Model Y prices in the U.S. after car deliveries fall

Honestly I think I’m more dissuaded because of who Elon has become.

nyoooom ,

There are quality issues but the success of Tesla was mostly due to the hype created by Elon, now that most of the people that care the most about the environment dislike Elon of course their sales drop

spacecowboy ,

The people that care the most about the environment aren’t buying electric cars at all. That’s not the solution.

JJROKCZ ,

For most of us that’s the best solution we can do. I’ve already cut out all the waste I can, I grow my own vegetables, I’m getting rain barrels and compost for my garden, I tried to get solar but the cost was too prohibitive here, I have shopped non-plastic alternatives everywhere i can, I limit travel as much as I’m allowed, but I need to drive to work like most Americans. My government will not be expanding public transit, there’s no interest at the federal or state levels and my local level just throws up racist dogwhistles about crime spreading if they add trains or buses every time the public petitions for it.

An electric car is the best I can do, I won’t let perfect be the enemy of good.

guacupado ,

You’re right. They’re buying F150s and Expeditions because that’s much better for us.

Fedizen ,

In the US we live where options other than cars simply aren’t subsidized or funded meaningfully for transit. This means yeah people who have to survive are going to be buying cars if they need them.

skuzz ,

Keeping one’s existing car if less than 20 years old, or buying a used efficient hybrid or used electric would both go further than buying a brand new electric. The typical capitalism throwaway wasteful lifestyle of the last century isn’t going to stop climate change, even if it has a cute green leaf icon on the dashboard.

GlitzyArmrest ,

Socsa ,

The success was because for a solid 5 years, the Model 3/Y were the only widely available long range EVs.

FrostyTrichs ,

I was drawn to them when they were new and different and it seemed like some of the problems were just growing pains. Now it seems like Tesla started as a great idea and quickly got steamrolled into a clown show like everything else Elon touches. At one point I wanted a model 3 but now I’d rather have a gas electric hybrid like a Prius or something and an ebike or scooter.

agitatedpotato ,

Knowing he can swoop into Tesla and start making decisions that over rule the experts that work there like he did at twitter should scare people who can’t afford to just buy another EV if it happens to Tesla.

Kage520 ,

“If” it happens to Tesla? Pretty sure the over promising if FSD and the poor build quality have always been Tesla things driven by Musk. Once competition gears up I really hope Tesla improves. It’s actually a fun car to drive just make sure you get one that was built properly and don’t bother with FSD.

agitatedpotato ,

Look at twitter though, I’m not convinced Tesla cant get much much worse and I think its directly related to how much time Musk spends doing his job there.

jivemasta ,

The difference is Twitter is a private company, and Tesla is public. Meaning he is free to run Twitter into the ground because at the end of the day, it’s his to do as he pleases. But with Tesla, he has to ultimately answer to the share holders, if he starts running amok of the company, they can vote to give him the boot and he can’t really do anything about it.

cricket97 ,

People here act like he murdered babies and reimplemented slavery. dude just says some stupid shit on twitter, a platform he overpaid for. y’all should be happy he’s pushing people to alternative social media platforms.

Mokujin ,

I think you’re minimizing the damage he is causing with his platform. He is saying and, allowing to be said, the quiet parts out loud representing the worst parts of humanity and, because it’s his platform literally, no one can stop him.

cricket97 ,

Can you point to some of the things he said that are particular egregious? And please don’t deflect onto another topic if possible

Mokujin ,

Honestly, if you need examples enumerated you are likely part of the problem

cricket97 ,

That’s a neat trick to get out of backing up your statement. You said he’s saying the quiet parts out loud, I’m a little baffled on what you are referring to.

Cheers ,

You mean added ad content that’s not removable or blockable, charging a subscription for no new features, and blocking users he doesn’t like.

    flossdaily ,

    I hate that argument.

We became a global superpower under a two party system. We passed the New Deal under a two party system.

It’s not the number of parties holding us back from greatness, and the suggestion that it is is what gets a fringe group of people to vote for Ralph Nader, and ultimately hand the country to George W Bush.

Republican lunatics absolutely love their party right now. The problem is that democrats keep voting for moderates in the primaries because they think that voting for Bernie Sanders will wind up with us losing the general election… As if Republicans don’t already call Obama, Hillary, and Biden socialists and communists.

    LazaroFilm ,
    @LazaroFilm@lemmy.world avatar

You’re right. It’s not the number of parties. It’s where the separation of this parties is. The system worked great for a very long time until a group of extremists figured out a way to pull the blankets to them a bit more every year. Gerrymandering and lobbying to tip the balance more and more. In sports, when someone finds a loophole in the rules, they change the rules to keep the game fair. In politics, when they find a hole the dig it deeper and deeper. That’s the difference. None the less, the cure t result is two parties so imbalanced that realistically it’s a single watered down party and an extremist party.
