What’s mildly infuriating here is OP… People are trying to explain how you could have saved almost 1/3 of your purchase price and you just argue with them and keep shouting from your soapbox.

Unfortunately, price shopping is a part of every transaction if you are trying to get the best deal. If you aren’t invested enough to read the largest banner on the shop website to save almost 1/3 of your total, then getting the best price was clearly not a concern when you ordered. Yes, you are expected to do that yourself, just like buying anything else in the commerce system we have been using for decades. It’s real boomer/privileged energy expecting that to just be done for you.

Crozekiel ,

Dude could have saved like $6+tax and gotten more food, and is still arguing that nothing could have been done…

Lead a horse to water and all that…

Crozekiel ,

You are expecting dominos to do it for you. That’s literally what you are asking. They aren’t going to do that for you because they make more money if you ignore the “deals”. Even a tiny barrier is going to keep out some number of people that don’t find value in spending 30 seconds to save 25% on a $30 tab because they have the money to not even notice, which increases profitability. Their line goes up. Our system forces all these companies to worry about that line going up.

That said, they aren’t trying to hide it from you, it is the largest thing on their store page, and their people on the phone will happily tell you about it.

Someone else made the same analogy, it is just like going to a drive through and ordering a burger, fries, and drink separately and not asking for a combo. Same products, but most places it will cost you more to order them separately than to order the combo.

If you are still mad about it, you aren’t mad at Dominos, you are mad at the core of our current economic system.

All of them i’ve actually wanted to try out I was able to stream via the xbox game pass website in a browser. It is not a perfect experience, but it is “good enough” on a decent internet connection. I understand that if you physically have an xbox you can also run the game on that and stream it to your linux desktop for much better performance and latency, but I have not tried this myself.

That said, it is pretty rare. The only ones I’ve tried that with were fortnite (a friend wanted to play the lego game mode, but it was short lived - starved for content, lol) and starfield (it was free on game pass and I wasn’t sure I wanted to buy it).

Crozekiel ,

They’ll probably come to the “logical conclusion” that storing the data locally on the machine poses “too much risk” and just move the storage to their servers “for your safety”…

People have the ability to block communities as they see fit individually and also follow whatever communities they want and only browse their subscribed list. (steering wheel)

But when popular communities are on an instance that is very much “get on board or get out” to the point they ban users from every community on their instance for having differing political views, it is very much reasonable to try to start or promote communities run on different instances controlled by better admins. (where the roads go (ok, so building roads is a bad analogy, it is more like when a place has terrible sidewalks so people walk through the grass and they wear in those little dirt-path short cuts and eventually no one uses the sidewalks))

I’m curious, could you skip a a DE and window manager and still run full screen graphical applications like games? Run it really like the DOS days when you just changed to the correct directory and ran the executable and then doom launches…?

Crozekiel ,

That “Unix” os from the og jurassic park movie.

Crozekiel ,

That’s real?! TIL…

I can’t decide if that changes my answer or not… lol Seems like a cumbersome way to browse files, but maybe that’s because it isn’t how I’ve learned…

Crozekiel ,

Find a member of staff and ask where the “human bathrooms” are. Don’t let them leave until they explain. Bonus points if you piss your pants while they are trying to explain.

Crozekiel ,

I’ve been 100% on Linux since July of last year. I thought I was currently having my first major Linux fucked up situation that I just could not figure out this weekend.

It has been very depressing, after trying to convince friends and family to give Linux a chance and keep an open mind for months, I was beginning to feel like a fraud and a liar.

But, after hours of software troubleshooting turning up nothing I’ve discovered I’m in the early stages of a dying ssd… My first major problem, and it’s hardware related. It sucks but it is also a relief in a weird way.

And I’m finding out about it way earlier than I likely would have in windows thanks to btrfs. But it’s also funny because if I had been having similar issues in windows I probably would have ran hardware diag much sooner, but because I’m still a bit of a Linux newbie I assumed I broke my OS and wasted hours troubleshooting software.

Crozekiel ,

My install does use btrfs (but unfortunately since I reused the other drives they are still ntfs formatted) and it does regular snapshots, but to the same drive. It isn’t completely borked yet so I’m hopeful I can “clone” to a new drive and rma the bad one (10 months old so should still have mfr warranty). I’ve used clonezilla in the past but had read it doesn’t support btrfs, maybe that info is outdated? I did see some promising tools for doing basically the same job through btrfs though. I planned to work on salvaging what I can tonight. Worst case scenario, all my personal files are synced to a cloud storage service so I’d just be out installed programs and configs if I have to reinstall from fresh.

Are there any EV cars without any "technology"?

Like the title says, are there any EVs that just have a Bluetooth radio and that’s it? Like a normal car, not a smartphone on wheels? If not, do you all think that this will actually happen at some point? This is the main reason why I can’t (and will never) buy an EV. I like to have actual buttons everywhere on my car. I...

Crozekiel ,

I hope so at some point. Drove a friend’s tesla and fuck that thing, even the speedometer was on the fucking center tablet… Fuckin why? I don’t want to hunt for my current speed in the bloated infotainment bs.

AI and Robots Are Automating the IVF Process: Here's How It's Already Helped 11 Women Get Pregnant (www.ibtimes.co.uk)

Hopeful parents who continue to struggle with infertility have found an unlikely ally in Science and the advancements of in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) as a laboratory in Guadalajara, Mexico harnesses the power of Artificial Intelligence and robotics to help streamline the IVF process.

Crozekiel ,

No, but we can make an ai that eats the food instead.

Crozekiel ,

So it’s taking some of the air out of the stream, slowing it down, and putting it back in the stream… How does this not affect the performance?

Crozekiel ,

Make it look like an old-timey log mill with the fan as the saw blade.

Crozekiel ,

I always love the “explaining dnd stats with a tomato” bit:

Strength is being able to throw a tomato really far.

Dexterity is being able to catch the tomato thrown really far.

Constitution is being fine after eating a bad tomato.

Intelligence is knowing a tomato is a fruit.

Wisdom is knowing a tomato doesn’t go in fruit salad.

Charisma is being able to sell a tomato based fruit salad.

Also, obligatory “salsa is tomato in a fruit salad”.

Crozekiel ,

Linux is the kerbal, the company would be GNU.

Crozekiel ,

Ah damn. Didn’t proof-read myself. It’s a fun typo though, maybe Linux is related to Jebediah?

Crozekiel ,

My favorite kind of math is dick math. Thank you.

Crozekiel ,

Well i’m definitely not clicking that at work.

Crozekiel ,

Dating apps if you can mentally survive them.

If not, then something like meetup app, find stuff you already like to do and go to events with like minded people. Make friends and maybe something more will come along.

Either way be patient. You can’t rush something like that.

Crozekiel ,

Sounds like your college experience and mine were slightly different. :/ You’re probably healthier for it.

Crozekiel ,

Okay but what happened in 1989 when it was 1% lower?

Crozekiel ,

Possible they passed away suddenly and a tech-illiterate family member threw them out while cleaning out their place. Not great there was no encryption but people often overlook making plans for their eventual death, we mostly just don’t like to think about it.

Crozekiel ,

They’d find it rather difficult to just download programs from random websites and run them, considering the file will not be marked executable by default and they can’t just “download and double-click”.

Crozekiel ,

Yea… Exactly… Thanks for providing evidence for me.

People going out and downloading random crap from shady websites clogging up their windows install with malware are not going to spend any amount of time troubleshooting why the random crap they downloaded doesn’t do anything when they double-click it. They likely won’t even know what to search for to find the solution to their “problem”.

Canadian photographer Francois Brunell searches and photographs similar people, but who are not related to each other. He has currently done about 200 couple portraits.

Canadian photographer Francois Brunelle spent 12 years tracking down real life Doppelgängers — two individuals who are not related but could pass for identical twins — and photographing them. He calls his project “I’m Not a Look-Alike,” and it’s starting to get some well-deserved attention....

Crozekiel ,

You’re not alone, I thought the same thing… They don’t look that similar, they would make a really trash “spot the difference” challenge.

Crozekiel ,

The problem is that crypto is not untraceable like it’s fans want to push. There have been multiple instances of it being tracked back and traced, by private individuals and law enforcement. It’s just debit card processing with extra steps and massive drain on resources.

Crozekiel ,

its usage cannot be denied or restricted

lol wat? I don’t know of a single local establishment that accepts Monero (or any other crypto) as payment (not saying it doesn’t exist, but it if so they are exceedingly rare). Seems pretty restricted to me. They also don’t seem to accept caps, eddies, gold, or spetims oddly enough.

Crozekiel ,

wtf even is Birdeye? Our work e-mails have all been being spammed by them claiming we have bad reviews and they can help. I’ve been ignoring them mostly, but noticed the text of the reviews reek of being AI written and none of them show up on any of the review sites (that we keep track of anyway). Is this some LLM spam company basically?

Crozekiel ,

A combination of Lutris, Bottles, and Proton GE has covered me so far. I find Lutris more gaming focused, and I have used Bottles a lot for little windows programs that aren’t really games (as an example, some stuff I have for making TTRPG maps and tokens and stuff that I could probably find alternatives to, but they work fine in Bottles so ¯_(ツ)_/¯ ).

Crozekiel ,

Have you tried those flags tho?

Crozekiel ,

And that wasn’t enough to force you to try Linux again? Does Billy Gates have to sodomize your dog, or where is the line? lol

Crozekiel ,

I dunno man, can’t know unless you try the flags. Might work. It worked for that guy.

Crozekiel ,

Yup. Imo made the entire ui so much worse all in an effort to blur the line between macos and Windows.

Windows 10 already required 3rd party software for me to use it. Windows 11 was a complete no-go for me from the moment I saw it. I’m so glad my OS drive died last year, it was the push I needed to go Linux only.

Crozekiel ,

Frankly, the way MS has been heading for the last decade, you either get OK with their official bloat and trackers or you switch to Linux. Anything else is just lying to yourself. That’s why you are getting those recommendations.

I’m also suspect of legacy software (not proprietary, but legacy) being supported in Windows 11 that wine can’t handle. The only stuff I’ve ran into that won’t run is DRM laden trash, and if that’s the case I wouldn’t classify it as ‘legacy’ if their call home servers are still running and supported.

Crozekiel ,

I’m not providing day to day tech support

This is the problem. Debloating Windows is a tug of war with Microsoft. Many here have pointed out you’d need to likely re-run the scripts after Windows Updates. After getting over the initial hump, you are likely going to be needed less day by day going the Linux route (or give up on them actually using a debloated and tracker free Windows).

Either:

  1. Your parents are sharper than you are giving them credit, and they’d likely pick it up pretty quick.
  2. They really are as unsavvy as you say and should not be downloading and installing whatever software they think they need on Windows, and would likely be safer on any Linux distro with a gui package manager.
Crozekiel ,

I’m just pointing out the perceived contradictions in the ‘requirements’, and explaining why you were likely getting “the Linux recommendation” you complained about in your edit.

Also, this isn’t an ‘RFP’ - you aren’t offering to pay anyone anything to do your dirty work. You asked for advice and appear to get mad when some of the advice you receive is not to your liking. Don’t act entitled, it’s literally free help/advice in a public forum. Even if someone’s suggestions don’t help you, they might help the next person with a similar situation/concern that comes looking for advice.

Crozekiel ,

This looks like some shit i’d build in the first night in minecraft when i run out of stair blocks.

Crozekiel ,

My guess is it’s just a car with a battery 5 times bigger than their comparison vehicle, can’t do over 30, go up a hill, or pass any safety standards.

Or it’s fictional.

Crozekiel ,

meh. folder is 2 syllables, directory is like 4. I’m lazy. If someone gave me a clear one syllable alternative that others would know what I meant (even if while cringing), i’d probably start using that instead. I’ve tried just “dir”, but no one ever knows wtf i’m saying.

Crozekiel ,

I might should clarify that when using “dir” verbally no one knows what I’m saying, but maybe how I pronounce it in my head isn’t how everyone else does, lol. In text it’s plenty clear, imo.

Crozekiel ,

Ttrpg character art via midjourney. That’s I think the only thing I’ve ever used.

Crozekiel ,

There is a launch argument you can add in steam, ‘–skip-launcher’ for bg3. You won’t be able to change between the dx or vulkan clients though without the launcher, if that matters to you (probably not, but figured I’d mention it). I’d guess there is a similar option for Cyberpunk 2077, but haven’t done it personally.

Crozekiel ,

polypterodaclib

Fucking hell, I nearly spat out my coffee at that one word. Bravo.

Crozekiel ,

I just broke 1000 hours on baldurs gate 3.

Minecraft also great, thankfully it does not tell me how many hours I’ve spent mining and crafting…
