FartsWithAnAccent , in In Tuesday's special election, Ohioans overwhelmingly voted against requiring a supermajority to amend their state constitution
@FartsWithAnAccent@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t normally say this, but good job Ohio.

Chetzemoka OP ,

Always remember that Ohio has been gerrymandered to shit. Republicans got so mad that the big-C cities voted Obama in twice that they decided to do everything they could to erode the rights and power of those city voters.

But you can't dilute the cities in a statewide vote. Look at the voting map on this issue: all major cities and college towns voted against

rustyj ,

District 1 is a fucking joke, I hate living in it. How is downtown Cincinnati connected to Warren county in any way? The seat used to be competitive, but It hasn’t swung democrat since the change in 2011.

MethodicalSpark ,

As a fellow OH-1 resident, you are aware we voted in Greg Landsman (D) as our representative this past election cycle, right? It was good to see Chabot go.

Prior to this, I was equally annoyed about our lack of representation and am still peeved about the state of Ohio districts in general.

buttsbuttsbutts ,

Iirc, in the last (illegal) redistricting, the Rs kinda gave Cincinnati our representative back, but created at least one other district that would go hard R.

It is really nice to have Landsman in there, though. He actually fights to get us funding for things, as opposed to Chabot’s preferred stance of steering funding literally anywhere else.

rustyj ,

Good point, I overlooked that. Guess I’m still salty from the previous decade lol. Was extremely happy to see Chabot go, and have been happy with Landsman in general so far. We have a ways to go but I’m trying to be optimistic!

buttsbuttsbutts ,

You have to remember that Trump easily won Ohio in 2020. This issue pulled in people from across party lines.

Chetzemoka OP ,
InternetUser2012 ,

It got more people to vote BECAUSE trump won. If everyone votes, the right has no chance. Even jim jordan with his bs gerrymandered to hell district would lose.

afraid_of_zombies , in After $700 Million U.S. Bailout, Trucking Firm Is Shutting Down

Remember this when you are told by Economists (who support bailouts) that student loans amnesty is impossible.

Buelldozer ,
@Buelldozer@lemmy.world avatar

There is a large difference between a 700 Million dollar loan and a 40 Billion dollar forgiveness. I’m not saying the student loan forgiveness is bad but there is a big difference in the dollar amounts between these two things.

afraid_of_zombies ,

So you are saying it is about the same amount as the GM stock swap that had widespread support?

Burninator05 ,

If you’re talking about the 2018 auto bailout, that ended up making the government money because they managed to emerge out from it and the government charged a little interest.

afraid_of_zombies ,

I am talking about the stock swap. You know the giant well over 10 billion dollar wealth transfer that was never paid back. You do know about this as you are talking about it, I trust.

Also I am curious now, why does a car company make the US government money but not people with degrees?

Dark_Blade ,
@Dark_Blade@lemmy.world avatar

Why does a car company make the US government money but not people with degrees?

They both do, and the people with degrees make even more money by paying interest on their crushing debt!

Buelldozer ,
@Buelldozer@lemmy.world avatar

The 2008 TARP that bailed out GM and Chrysler may have had widespread support but it wasn’t universal. In my opinion it shouldn’t have been done either and was probably only necessary because of the original Chrysler bailout back in the day. Without that “The Big Three” would have been subject to market forces and turned into “The Big Two”, the healthier market may have kept GM from being in the position to need a bailout.

The other point of note is that GM did repay their loan so at least in that instance it worked out. I have no idea why anyone in the Federal Government thought that Yellow would be able to successfully repay this one.

afraid_of_zombies ,

I specifically mentioned the stock swap not the loan. The swap was never paid back and was +10 billion range.

Universally supported because everyone likes to forget about it.

Buelldozer ,
@Buelldozer@lemmy.world avatar

I had to look that up because honestly I had forgotten about it. It’s not that I “like” to, I just did.

The argument that GM should have been required to make up the difference seems reasonable to me, of course I think the bailout was unreasonable in the first place sooooo…

afraid_of_zombies ,

But you knew it at one point. We all did. No one likes the idea that a private company was given well over 10 billion dollars, never paid it back, and the only reason they were given it was because they failed at the free market.

No one wants to remember that they flew in on a private jet to Washington DC to beg for money. No one wants to remember that they were having problems for decades. No one wants to remember the blatant corruption of a Democratic party Congress with a Democratic party president awarding money to a solid blue state. No one wants to remember that they withheld evidence about their ignition locks and a women was falsy imprisoned for years for murder charges. No one wants to remember that they had since the 1970s oil crisis to adapt.

All this stuff you read at one point or heard about on the radio or saw a program on TV or heard someone discussing it. A week from now you will forget it again. Because it was shitty and wrong and they got away with it. It is like a cognitive blindspot.

Olgratin_Magmatoe , (edited )

$757 billion has been forgiven in PPP loans. That $700 million figure is just from Yellow alone.

Forgiving student loans is a drop in the bucket in comparison to the bailouts the wealthy get.

kaitco ,

Honestly, there’s bigger fish to fry (pun only moderately intended).

If we didn’t have war in Ukraine, and war AND genocide in Gaza and two African countries at the moment, and then whatever the hell is happening in Venezuela and ascertaining its ramifications, along with stupid inflation on just what we need to live, and multiple generations locked out of homeownership or possibly even retirement due to a corporate greed-created housing crisis and predatory student loans, and a SCOTUS that is bent on removing the rights of just about anyone who isn’t a straight, white “Christian” man…then yeah, death penalty talk should have been on the table.

But, Harris is a politician, and all politicians have to focus on whichever sound bites can bring over those who are - astonishingly - undecided at this point. It’s naive to think that any candidate who has it “all” will get the nomination. That’s how Hilary got the nomination over Bernie, and it’s how we got Biden as well.

kescusay ,
@kescusay@lemmy.world avatar

It blows my mind that anyone could be undecided now, but clearly there are folks out there who simply do not in any way follow the news or put any effort into understanding the candidates or issues until the very last minute.

It’s a mindset I simply don’t get.

WanderingVentra ,

It’s insane. You think those people just wouldn’t vote if they’re that uninformed, but nope, there must really be people out there who will vote based on the vibes they’re feeling that week or something.

The only way I could see it is if you’re a Republican voter who’s getting worried about Trump’s increasingly unhinged tweeting and speeches. But even then, considering what he’s done before, it’s hard to believe someone hitting that point now, so late.

Rhaedas ,

There are plenty of people out there who live by the "Never Vote Democrat" rule, regardless of not realizing that Democrat policies would probably help them, and Republican actions are why they are bad off now. Party line, do or die. How can you change that?

WanderingVentra ,

At least then you’re a dedicated Republican cult member by this point. But being an undecided voter, now? That’s hard for me to wrap my mind around lol.

Rhaedas ,

I can't say I understand it either. All I can do is try to suggest to them maybe there's a reason to vote left, even on just a single issue, and perhaps break through the wall of sports politics and apathy. I don't see that as taking a high road, but just trying to win the little battles where it's feasible. Some people are lost, and you find that out really quickly if you can't even have a discussion with them without it getting ugly.

AA5B ,

anyone could be undecided now

frezik ,

The President can blanket commute federal death penalty sentences. It’s been done in specific cases before:

deathpenaltyinfo.org/president-obama-commutes-two…

Would just need the some White House lawyers to draw up the paperwork, and it’s done for at least one administration. Literally the minimum that could be done.

Most death penalty cases are at the state level, of course. Even if they have Democrats in the governor’s office, this power will depend on the individual state constitution.

Hellinabucket ,

My parents have been married for 35 years cause it’s cheaper than getting divorced.

lolcatnip ,

Getting a divorce is really cheap if you just do it yourself. If they’re capable of living together for 35 years, they should be able to manage signing a few documents together.

Jano ,

The literal and figurative cost of divorce has little to do with handling the paperwork.

Hellinabucket ,

Adjusting living arrangements and insurance and other assets isn’t as easy or straight forward though. And if everything has to be intermingled why go to the time of doing the paper work.

partial_accumen , in Elon Musk’s X just sued a nonprofit advertising group out of existence

The end of GARM marks a temporary victory for Musk and X CEO Linda Yaccarino, even though a judge hasn’t made a ruling yet.

It isn’t though - this is an industry group that helped vet platforms… given how Musk responds to people pulling their advertisements from the platform this is probably actually counter productive… also the Streisand effect.

stoly ,

I think that part of the problem for musk is that advertisers were paying attention to the findings and they may have influenced some to stop.

orcrist ,

The actual message is to not create a single entity that could be sued like this. Businesses can still get the same information and make the same decisions.
