I’m a dev manager… I have 3x4k monitors. I watch server loads, I watch the build pipeline and watch the commit logs etc.

Overkill these days, but I’m also a gamer sooooo…

legios ,
@legios@aussie.zone avatar

100% My job is to stop the team from feeling all the corporate BS as much as possible. I’m an ex-dev myself so my job is to make sure they’re OK and that thy’re not getting pressure from stakeholders/PMs/POs etc.

A massive amount of tech managers have zero empathy sadly. But I’m the complete opposite. If anyone in my team isn’t doing OK they just need to tell me, whether it’s financial, personal, work-related etc.

I’m a senior manager at a pretty big company.

That’s something she does on the side, and if anyone in the workplace gave her shit, I would tell them to leave it the fuck alone unless they wanted me to bring HR in to the convo.

Can people please not be cunts? (I’m an Aussie…)

Edit: People need to disconnect things. Say there’s leaked nudes (or even just public nudes) of a work colleague. Let’s take it to they used to do porn. Yep, that’s something they did. That has zero impact on their role now or who they are in their role. They don’t deserve shame, or ridicule.

It was a problem with early WD green drives IIRC. The power management was exceptionally aggressive and caused massive issues when put in to any RAID-like set up. You could override it though generally.

I manage a web dev team. We try to optimise as much as possible but then there’s all sorts of tracking that gets tacked on by personalisation teams, opti teams, things like Tik Tok, Facebook, Twitter/X scripts inserted too… It’s pretty shit. And sometimes when things break it makes it super hard to debug too

I once got a taxi from Sydney airport when I was there for work. The guy tried to go through the boom gate by tailgating the car in front. Broke the boom gate and just kept driving.

Lots of taxi drivers here are completely terrible. Try to rip people off and have had a lot of friends file sexual harassment complaints too.

Being the petty person I can be at times, someone on ye olde reddit posted a list of people who “died from the vaccine” and listed… 23 names I think it was? I looked up all the information I could on all 23 and concluded 2 of them I couldn’t definitively say what their cause of death was, but not a single one pointed to the vaccine (and a not-insignificant number wouldn’t have even had access to the vaccine in their country at the time they supposedly died from it.)

I know it didn’t change their mind because hand wave reasons

Why aren't more releases x265?

Nearing the filling of my 14.5TB hard drive and wanting to wait a bit longer before shelling out for a 60TB raid array, I’ve been trying to replace as many x264 releases in my collection with x265 releases of equivalent quality. While popular movies are usually available in x265, less popular ones and TV shows usually have...

legios ,
@legios@aussie.zone avatar

I’ve done a bunch of transcoding of things to x265 in the past (as I’m sure everyone is aware transcoding isn’t GREAT but cuts down on storage costs). With that said I’ve now moved to AV1. I don’t use GPU encoders at all as I found the quality to be pretty terrible. I just use a custom written ZSH script to go through and check the current format (it also converts audio to OPUS too)

A bunch of friends and I have been playing Sniper Elite 5. It’s a mixed bag of varied experience. Some are terrible but just enjoy the shit talking (I’m one of those) and others just kick the crap out of the rest of us. But it’s a fun bonding experience too since you can have up to 4 teams against each other and just need to make sure there’s a fairly even balance.

legios ,
@legios@aussie.zone avatar

I actually wanted to look this up. This is an interesting article - newyorker.com/…/the-evolution-of-alexey-navalnys-…

“He has never apologized for his earliest xenophobic videos or his decision to attend the Russian March. At the same time, he has adopted increasingly left-leaning economic positions and has come out in support of the right to same-sex marriage. This strategy of adopting new positions—without ever explicitly denouncing old ones—is probably the reason the suspicion of ethno-nationalism continues to shadow Navalny.”

I personally don’t have really have opinion either way but was curious.

@legios@aussie.zone avatar

Same here for the same reasons (although I started with FreeBSD 4.x) and have adapted to ZFS and Jails over the years.

The POLA (Principle Of Least Astonishment) when it comes to changes is awesome too.

There’s a few ways to do it, but analysis is normally done via PRISM along with other things.

“PRISM is a semi-structured diagnostic interview designed to deal with the problems of psychiatric diagnosis when subjects/patients drink heavily or use drugs”

legios ,
@legios@aussie.zone avatar

Like a lot of things it’s a differential analysis, meaning it’s down to narrowing things down but there is also blood tests, chemical tests etc. It’s fairly accurate but relies on anecdotal evidence such as past historyt etc.

Many years ago I worked in ‘criminal psych’ but this isn’t just “Oh I think this is why it happened.” The article is light on but it seems she has never shown any psychological/psychiatric issues. This is a difficult one for me since I’ve seen people with substance-induced (or drug-induced) psychosis.

Psychosis is crippling, and she will be experiencing guilt and there’s probably an onset of a psychotic disorder. People saying she ‘got off light’, while she’s lucid she knows what she did and will be struggling for life with this.

legios ,
@legios@aussie.zone avatar

Any time!

Psychosis is a literal break from reality. I suspect when the police showed up she was no longer psychotic and realised what was happening and couldn’t deal with what had happened. She knew she did it but couldn’t understand how or why but knew she did it by physical evidence, she now knows she did it but the integration of her psychotic state and actions to her non-psychotic state would be crushing, hence the suicidal actions she had.

Problem is I imagine a lot of their hardware is under NDA so they’re unable to. I appreciate what they’re trying to do but a lot of hardware companies sadly won’t allow them to publish a lot of things. I do wish there was more open-source hardware (and I say that as a huge open-source advocate)

This is my thing. I have about 122TB of spinning metal (with the same as an offsite backup) with SSDs as ZIL and L2ARC. And it’s awesome. HDDs I think will genuinely be important for for the foreseeable future.

Tech CEO Forced Assistant to Sign 'Sex Slave' Contract, and Tormented Her With Sadomasochistic Bondage, Lawsuit Alleges (themessenger.com)

A former Bay Area tech CEO was fired earlier this year after allegedly enslaving, torturing, and sexually abusing his assistant. He claims the pair had a consensual relationship that people would “celebrate” if it were fictitious....

legios ,
@legios@aussie.zone avatar

The thing most people don’t realise is in a dom/sub relationship it’s actually the sub who has all the power. They can withdraw consent etc. any time they want Having someone you’re in a relationship with directly reporting to you is problematic and most companies would explicitly not permit it.

WTF is this ramble at the end on about?

legios ,
@legios@aussie.zone avatar

That’s assuming they won’t still take bribes, ‘benefits’ etc. from other sources. If there was a way to regularly review, audit and enforce those rules I would agree with you but even if they get paid that much there’s no limits to some peoples greed sadly.

legios ,
@legios@aussie.zone avatar

I think the idea here is to force them to develop some sort of empathy for what people who work in fast food have to deal with on a day to day basis and learn from it (which should reduce recidivism) as well as some punishment, hence the 30 day jail sentence and 60 days working in the job (or just 90 days in jail).

I’m personally in favour of this. A jail sentence is purely punishment, whereas this feels like a combination of punishment and rehabilitation which is rare but tends to provide better outcomes (this tends to be contentious so I won’t provide links, but please do look it up if you get the chance).

legios ,
@legios@aussie.zone avatar

I honestly think it’s the best OS they released. Shame so many games would throw a shitfit at the time because it reported it was Windows NT (rightfully so).

White House warns Congress the US is out of money, nearly out of time to avoid 'kneecap' to Ukraine (apnews.com)

The Biden administration on Monday sent Congress an urgent warning about the need to approve tens of billions of dollars in military and economic assistance to Ukraine, saying Kyiv’s war effort to defend itself from Russia’s invasion may grind to a halt without it....

legios ,
@legios@aussie.zone avatar

Thing is Ukraine doesn’t have a defense pact with the US. The US is doing this out of (insert any number of reasons ranging from stability in the region, strengthening ties, propping up military manufacturers etc).

The Philippines have had a defense pact with the US since 1951 and basically means if things can’t be resolved diplomatically the US will commit not just arms but fighting forces to the joint defense of the nation.

To quote Wikipedia - ‘In a 2022 meeting, US Vice-President Kamala Harris reportedly assured Philippine president Bongbong Marcos that “an armed attack on the Philippines armed forces, public vessels, or aircraft in the South China Sea would invoke US Mutual Defense commitments.”’

legios ,

Australia too. Hentai showing underage people is illegal here. From my understanding it’s all a little grey depending on the state and whether the laws are enforced, but if it’s about victimisation the law will be pretty clear.

legios ,
@legios@aussie.zone avatar

Do you believe in rehabilitation? Would you say your values are exactly the same now as they were when you were a child? Do you think that people who grew up in unhealthy environments come out of it with a well-formed sense of psychonormativity?

@legios@aussie.zone avatar

I used to work in restorative justice and you’d be surprised at the benefits for the offenders AND the victims/families of victims when I worked in criminology so I’ve had this conversation with the victims.

Does it always work? No. But when it does does it improve things? Generally yes. It’s not black and white.

I can present a link - theguardian.com/…/sweden-seeks-to-stem-deadly-ris…

I present Dual_EC_DRBG as a great example of “you can’t trust shit”

But also CPUs and motherboards may be compromised too. Whether it’s by China or the US… It’s a plausible thing. Intel IME and AMD Secure Processor amongst others…

Yeah I remember IE5 and NS4, as well as the Firebird/Phoenix/Firefox naming joys back in the day.

If you want to blow your brains out, try getting XHTML 1.1 working in IE6. It is indeed possible if you modify the XHTML DTD. Interestingly it’d render shit so much better since it’d use MSXML instead of Trident as the rendering engine. Sadly it would add about 400k to the page since it needed to load a custom DTD…

legios ,
@legios@aussie.zone avatar

Haha, I remember buying Mandrake Linux CDs… I’m a FreeBSD user these days (for the past 20-odd years) but still run KDE. Plus they’re still trying to remain fairly *nix agnostic which is nice.

legios ,
@legios@aussie.zone avatar

Oh shit, I remember LiteStep and spending hours and hours to just fiddle with how my desktop looked. I personally felt Windows 2000 was the pinnacle of MS OSs (except so many games etc. wouldn’t run because rightly the OS reported it was Windows NT and a lot of games shat themselves at that)

legios ,
@legios@aussie.zone avatar

If you’re using any FreeBSD-based OS you should manually compile the realtek-re-kmod port. Make sure your kernel source is in sync with what you’re running.

legios ,
@legios@aussie.zone avatar

Yeah it’s a pain in the arse. I 100% recommend Broadcom or Intel NICs for a router. I have a fileserver which has several Intel NICs and a single Realtek one and the latter is a PITA.

I wonder if they’ll just use WebRTC and use peer-to-peer. Which is you know, revolutionary… cough

legios ,

Yep I second this. I have gone NC with all my exes. Two wanted continued contact but that’s just not me and sometimes people ask me what they’re up to and I can happily respond I have NFI.

In one case I found out they lied to me about why we broke up and the second she became a horrible, vindictive person after we broke up and started spreading lies and rumours about 6 month after we split. Originally both breakups were quite amicable and soured and they didn’t understand that that had quite a lot to do with my decision to 100% no contact.

I don’t think I’m 100% against it now that I think about it further. I just seem to have a history of dating people with an underlying hurtful streak and/or poor empathy…
