Soup , in Biden says he 'screwed up' debate but vows to stay in election

Trump didn’t answer a single fucking question and blathered on just as much- yet of course the focus is ALL on Biden. Trump didn’t even have to show up.

The hate was there before it began.

Not a word about what “King” Trump said or did…. And here we are. America deserves Trump at this point.

lennybird ,
@lennybird@lemmy.world avatar

There are two ways to look at this. In one respect you can say why the hell are so many Americans still not grasping just how bad Trump is?

But then you need to assume the responsibility of being the more informed party and adjust your strategy not for the electorate you want but for the electorate you have.

And that electorate is demanding a better candidate for Democrats to appeal to said uninformed undecided swing state voters who will decide this election.

praise_idleness ,

Trump didn’t answer a single fucking question

And that was the best strat for him. Biden was falling apart himself. Letting the man talk was the winning strategy. He was lying and exaggerating but at the end of the day, Biden’s performance was so embarrasingly bad that they didn’t even matter

She pretty much created her own bad reputation. Not just from this show, but it definitely cemented it. There was also a sex tape scandal, but I think it was wrong to slutshame someone for something like that even back then.

Her main reputation was always vapid, filthy rich, snotty socialite - she was hardly the first, but she might have been the first we got to watch in a seasons-long reality show.

Edited to add - if that stuff was all an intentional move to bring shame on her family for how they mistreated her growing up, I’m now her biggest cheerleader.

Price collusion is still price collusion when an algorithm does the pricing for you. I hope they nail these fuckers to the wall with fines and breaking apart their companies.

circuscritic , (edited )

I hope so as well, but am not optimistic.

If recent history has shown us anything, it’s that this will just lock in the current rates. Of which the combined profits from, will be exponentially more then whatever legal costs and fines are ultimately paid.

Maybe a single pasty will get 36 months, with 24 suspended.

All of which will eventually be overturned on appeal to SCOTUS.

If this was to do with collusion against home owners, a significantly powerful voting block that is politically catered to, it’d be different.

But renters are viewed as livestock, the pay pigs for the elite, and only given enough illusions of justice or action to avoid bread riots.

I will provide the caveat that if this investigation dovetails into, or brings in, investigations into companies that also harm the interest of middle class homeowners, there might be some hope for it making a dent.

honestly, if recent history was anything to go on this investigation would have never started or immediately ended, agreeing they did nothing wrong.

You’re referring to settlements where the accused pays a fine and maybe agrees to certain conditions, but is allowed to do so without admitting to any wrongdoing.

That part comes after the investigation concludes…which is exactly what I’m talking about.

evatronic ,

It’s only new-feeling cause it’s been 20-some years since we’ve had a democratic control of most parts of the government.

It’s pretty neat, right?

Buelldozer ,
@Buelldozer@lemmy.today avatar

All of which will eventually be overturned on appeal to SCOTUS.

Way too much cynicism. The current SCOTUS isn’t nearly as beholden to big money interests as many people love to pretend they are. Their recent upholding of funding for the CPB is a prime example of this.

circuscritic , (edited )

…SCOTUS has been expanding corporate power since long before the current majority. This is a nearly 40 year long project and it transcends any nominal association of a justice as being liberal or conservative.

There’s no doubt that it has been accelerated as of late, but don’t kid yourself about who they serve

Also, that CFPB case would have wrecked the status quo of power and how government funding works. Not a subtle shift, or a quick jolt, but a fucking wrecking ball by making it so that programs that makeup nearly 2/3rds of the federal budget would have to be continually reauthorized e.g. Medicare, Social Security, etc.

tal , (edited )
@tal@lemmy.today avatar

It’s sad the lawyers are sucking money from the victims’ families.

I’d give reasonable odds that they aren’t.

So, some lawyers do cases on contingency. Basically, if they lose, they don’t get paid. But if they win, the plaintiff agrees to give them a (potentially quite substantial) chunk of the payout.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contingent_fee

A contingent fee (also known as a contingency fee in the United States or a conditional fee in England and Wales) is any fee for services provided where the fee is payable only if there is a favourable result. Although such a fee may be used in many fields, it is particularly well associated with legal practice.

www.lawfirm.com/terms/contingency-fee/

A contingency fee is a payment agreement between an attorney and a client. Instead of paying an upfront or hourly rate, the client agrees to pay the attorney a percentage of any compensation recovered.

This percentage is usually between 20% and 50%, according to Cornell Law School.

So, say you’re one of the lawyers here. You figure, okay, all of these parties you’re suing have real money. You sue them. Maybe it costs you $N to do the case. But if your expected return is $100N, and maybe you’ve got a 1-in-30 chance of getting lucky with a sympathetic jury and winning a big payout, then the expected return says that it’s worthwhile to just throw mud at a wall and see what sticks.

Your odds probably aren’t great of winning any of these lawsuits, but every now and then, you can get really big payouts, which makes up for the case being a long shot. Do enough of them – and here, they’re suing a bunch of parties – and it becomes increasingly likely that you’ll win one.

The families this week also announced lawsuits against 92 Texas Department of Public Safety officers. The lawsuit names the Uvalde School District and several of its employees as defendants, including the then-principal and then-school district police chief.

The families also plan to sue the federal government, their attorney said, noting that over 150 federal officers were at the school.

Even deeper pockets than the companies involved.

The money here ultimately comes from the company’s customers if they win (since it results in higher prices) or if they win against the government, higher taxes. The families probably won’t pay anything in the event of a loss. In a win, they’ll split the money with the lawyers.

maynarkh ,

I would only argue with this piece:

The money here ultimately comes from the company’s customers if they win (since it results in higher prices)

Prices have been divorced from costs and are more based on “what the market will bear”. This only would be true if markets were actually competitive, and the fines encompassed a large amount of the supply side, neither of which is true. Fines like this are borne by the company books.

Artyom ,
