JustMy2c ,

It is the most cruel people in the world that hide behind a law book and the pretense of being fair and worse even: past cases.

If you think 15$+tax+tip is fine for a glass of wine with lunch on a daily basis; you are NOTTTTTTT qualified to speak for the benefit of society : in contrary!

BananaTrifleViolin ,

Yeah I think you’re mistaking what a Judges role is. It is merely to uphold the law. The problem in the US is that the role is so politicised that the idea they are legal experts rather than representatives of parties is being lost. They should be representative of society to an extent but ultimately the main qualification is legal experience.

The issue is the law itself and that comes back to the elected politicians in Alabama. It’s a problem of one party rule, and first past the post electoral system plus gerrymandering which means a stagnant political system dominated by one segment of society. The US increasingly looks like a it’s just a large collection of failed democracies.

You don’t specifically need representative judges. You need electoral reform so you have an actual representative democracy, and everything else comes from that.

JustMy2c ,

I’m stating it’s the WRONG ROLE law should NOT be upheld in the same way for poor and rich. For uneducated and the wise.

IT SHOULD NOT BE THE SAME favoring the poor and weak.

HOWEVER IT FAVORS THE EXACT OPOSITE.

pinkdrunkenelephants ,

It shouldn’t favor anybody.

If anything, it goes to show why legal systems are plain and simply bad ideas and why people need to have the ultimate authority to handle business on their own again. That way, at least, it’s fair, for every man is provided for by either victory, ingenuity, or death.

Vorticity ,

Okay, I’m genuinely curious, can you elaborate on what you’re advocating? What time in human history do you think we should return to? Tribalism?

I don’t think there has ever been a period of time where there wasn’t some form of social organization. Humans are naturally social and tend to create social groups with rules and enforcement mechanisms. Even if we were to start with a blank slate where there were no governments, companies, tribes, or social groups, humans would quickly recreate them because we have evolved to make use of social structures. We are stronger as a group than individually and groups only survive by having rules and methods of enforcement.

pinkdrunkenelephants ,

You’re not genuinely curious or here in good faith, you’re derisive, vindictive and guilty of every moral failing you’re about to accuse me of having for not thinking the way you do.

So you do not get the luxury of a debate with me.

Now I said that legal systems are plain and simply bad ideas, and that sadly is not going to change no matter who does what. It’s just the reality of the situation.

So move on from this conversation like you would have told me to had I wasted your time arguing with you about it.

Vorticity ,

If I came across as derisive, I didn’t mean to. I was genuinely trying to ask what you meant.

I don’t know how it is possible for me to be vindictive when I don’t know you. I don’t want revenge against you. You’ve done nothing to me.

I wasn’t going to accuse you of any kind of moral failing and am not sure why you took my response as a personal attack on your moral character.

You stated that “legal systems are plain and simply bad ideas” and that “people need to have the ultimate authority to handle business on their own again”. That sounds like you are advocating a return to something that existed in the past where people could act autonomously, without regard for the legal system.

I am responding that I don’t think that people have ever had the “ultimate authority to handle business on their own” and am wondering if you can give an explanation of what you are suggesting. I’m arguing that, when presented with anarchy, humans will always tend to create social structures and legal systems.

Cowlitz ,

Sure, most people clean their dick, but if you honestly think cutting your dick up makes it cleaner, then I’m going to assume you just don’t get near it with soap and water because any dick can be cleaned with soap and water.

    prole ,

but if you honestly think cutting your dick up makes it cleaner, then I’m going to assume you just don’t get near it with soap and water

Yeah I’m sorry this just makes no sense.

First of all, the overwhelming number of circumcisions occur long before a person is capable of consenting to such a procedure. So I don’t think people are walking around thinking, “hey, if I cut up my dick, I won’t have to clean it anymore!”

This shit happened when I was born, I had zero choice in it. It’s absurd to make assumptions like that as if it’s a personal choice.

Second, the assumption doesn’t even make sense. Nobody has ever said or implied that circumcision is an alternative to washing your dick. That’s insane. What are your even fucking talking about??

wow we found one in the wild (no offense). But seriously I would like to know, why not give your kids the chance to decide for themselves as well?

    JustZ , (edited )
    @JustZ@lemmy.world avatar

A number of reasons. The whole “well just wash” thing kind of presumes a certain quality of life and access to hygiene that isn’t guaranteed–my doctor’s opinion on this was informed by his experience in the jungle in Vietnam; it is more hygienic that washing, as obviously soap and water doesn’t remove all bacteria and fungus that live on the skin, especially in folds or crevices; it’s a surface that goes right over the top of an open orifice, so the risk of infection really isn’t something to leave to chance as to whether or not you’ll finish the day with a hot shower and soap; adult circumcision requires open wound care protocol, which carries its own risk of infection, in a very sensitive area, prone to healing complications, whereas babies have veritable superhuman healing powers and it heals in a few days with Vaseline; as a baby it’s a basically an outpatient dermatological procedure, as an adult it’s an actual surgery, with much greater risks of complications. It’s a no brainer; it was recommended by every doctor we asked, who all considered it a no brainer. I know you can find anything online but the science and weighing of risks on this is makes the decision pretty clear.

E: Dumb, anti-acience people are downvoting this. Apparently they know more than doctors.

    ChairmanMeow ,
    @ChairmanMeow@programming.dev avatar

The scientific evidence supporting circumcision is actually fairly unconvincing. It’s still invasive, medically unnecessary surgery, that kills ~100 babies every year. It’s also proven that their brains are impacted by the procedure and show signs of PTSD.

Literally no other health board except American ones recommend circumcision. Canada, the Netherlands, the UK, Germany, all of these countries recommend strongly against circumcision as a therapeutic treatment, as far less invasive and much more effective options exist to achieve similar or far better health benefits. Even having basic hygiene and washing your penis erases any claimed health benefits from circumcision (which were already incredibly minor). It’s literally only potentially beneficial if you don’t observe basic hygiene.

It’s also fairly unethical to make decisions regarding what is effectively mostly cosmetic surgery on a baby boy that can not consent to the procedure.

Literally almost every mammal evolved to have some kind of penile sheath. If it was truly detrimental to have a foreskin, it is highly unlikely that would have happened.

Nah. They’re on record saying it sets a bad precedent to expel a member before they are convicted. I can only imagine the awful shit they’re hiding and are worried they could get expelled for.

George Santos is from tomato red Long Island. The seat is gonna stay red. Long Island was literally founded on racism (look up the history of Robert Moses)

    argon ,

The district has gone for Democrats in every presidential election of the past 20 years except once. A Democrat held the house seat for the past ten years prior to the 2022 election. Special elections are usually a little weird and Dem’s have been doing really well in them recently. It might be a competitive and close election, but it’s not a red district by any stretch of the imagination.

    Furball ,

Nah bro, everyone on Long Island is a racist republican.

    Power protects power

reverendsteveii , in Maryland roommates claim police detained them at gunpoint for no reason and shot their pet dog: "No remorse"

These people did nothing wrong and were accosted by armed thugs in their own home. The dog did nothing wrong and was murdered. The taxpayers did nothing wrong and will pay out tons of money to these people. The police, who did everything wrong, will face no repercussions for their actions because qualified immunity dictates that they didn’t necessarily know that holding innocent people at gunpoint violates their rights.

    foggy ,

When police break the law, they should be tried on a matter of whether or not the taxpayers are responsible for what occurred.

People like this should never get our tax dollars spent on their well-being.

We should be way more angry about this than we are.

When police break the law, they should be tried

that would be a hell of a start

We should be way more angry about this than we are.

A lot of time, effort and money is spent convincing people that the police and their abuse are things that only happens to those people.
