I can’t wait for conservatives to bitch about how the medical practice has now been “politicized.” Motherfuckers, YOU were the ones who politicized it!
It’s dangerous for immigrants, non-white citizens, non-christians, and LGBTQ+ people now that violence has been openly condoned against people that don’t conform to their narrow world view. It’s actually quite scary.
I would add any and all women to that list as well. Non-white women have it worse but it’s also getting worse and worse for white women because of things like abortion bans and the increase in toxic Christianity.
I don’t even understand thatm that’s hurting their own production. Do they think you can work effectively after a fucking heatstroke? This is ridiculous.
It’s got nothing to do with productivity. The worse the working conditions, the less mental and physical energy workers have to spend on organizing. Maintaining effective power and control over the serfs is the only thing more important to businesses than short term profits.
It’s much less nefarious than that for most places.
Air conditioning (heating and cooling) is another expense they’d rather not have. Business will never offer to pay more than they have to, it’s antithetical to their existence. It’s what’s happening at my job right now.
Not defending it at all, see my other comment in here explaining how I suffer from it too, just helping explain at least one reason why businesses choose to not care.
A lot of stuff sounded illegal. Poor storage is illegal when dealing with bio safety hazards of this level, poor labeling too. Sounded like they didn’t have protocols available or even approved by review boards which is illegal. I doubt they even had proper bio safety ratings which would be illegal in this case. The whole situation sounds extremely dangerous and I hope no harm has been done.
You can’t just decide to set up a medical lab and do experiments with infectious diseases and animals without permits and licences and oversight, you know.
Business groups and lobbyists have aggressively opposed efforts at state and federal levels to enact heat protection standards for workers, claiming employers already practice what a standard would mandate, expressing concerns about the burden on employers, and claiming the efforts take a “wrong approach”.
No matter what regulations were implemented, regulators would have to watch them like a hawk to make sure they complied anyway. Also - people wouldn’t be dying if the current standards were sufficient for the current climate.
Having the rules in place allows them to prosecute or punish if something bad happens. They don’t need continuous monitoring. Investigating employee reports is fine.
The restoration of this former reservoir is going to be an epic task of conservation with very interesting results. I'm sure extensive measurement and tracking will make this not only a useful scientific experiment but hopefully a prototype for future dam removals.
It would be so cool to view it live in action over time
they seem to be using ‘bio-engendered mice’ as a scare phrase
Did you read the article? It says what they were bio-engineered for.
Wang Zhaolin, a representative of the company operating the lab, Prestige Biotech, told investigators that the mice inside the warehouse had been genetically engineered to catch and spread the COVID-19 virus, according to The San Joaquin Valley Sun.
I actually noticed that when searching for "prestige biotech" (the name of the company) pretty much all the conservative media already state that it is Chinese linked. The weird thing is that they state it as a fact without explaining how they arrived to this conclusion.
I mean, it very well might be, but tell me how you arrived to that conclusion.
Chinese listed owner. Chinese representative. Mysterious purpose with unknown source of funds. Not too hard to connect the dots.
Edit: Apparently people don't realise Chinese can refer to ethnicity as well as nationality. Yes, it would be ideal if we had different terms for the two.
An investigation found the tenant was Prestige BioTech, a company registered in Nevada and unlicensed for business in California. City officials spoke with Xiuquin Yao, who was identified as the company president, through emails included in the court documents. Yao told officials that Prestige BioTech moved assets belonging to a defunct company, Universal Meditech Inc., to the Reedley warehouse from Fresno after UMI went under. Prestige Biotech was a creditor to UMI and identified as its successor, according to court documents. Officials were unable to get any California-based address for either company except for the previous Fresno location from which UMI had been evicted. “The other addresses provided for identified authorized agents were either empty offices or addresses in China that could not be verified,” court documents said.
The county also discovered nearly 1,000 bioengineered mice. Wang Zhaolin, a representative of Prestige Biotech – the company operating the lab – told county investigators that the mice were genetically engineered to catch and carry the COVID-19 virus
I mean if you don’t want conspiracy theories to spread then don’t make them true to begin with
Pretty sure one of the Chinese ran USA labs were caught sending samples of contagious diseases back to China via standard DHL type packages. This was before COVID.
Buddy, see my username? Yeah, that's a Chinese name. I of all people know exactly what the difference is between Chinese ethnicity and Chinese nationality.
With that said, the majority of Chinese business people have some connection or other to China, be it family, business, or otherwise. Combine that with the context here of mysterious purpose (but probably bioweapons), unknown funding source and complete lack of any commercial purpose, etc etc, and it's not a hard conclusion to draw.
I love how even the news isn’t calling Twitter “X,” even when it’s talking about the stupid giant pulsating X Elon put up as a giant DivorcedMan signal.
