She wasn’t a suspect. They could have just left her apartment. Between fight and flight, they could have easily chosen flight.

TipRing ,

If he was afraid of her splashing him with boiling water, why advance on her? He should be moving back to avoid being close enough to be threatened. Even giving him the maximum benefit of the doubt his actions created the situation. It’s like if a cop steps out in front of your vehicle in traffic and then shoots you because you were about to run him over. Even if you believe she was threatening him, he still murdered her because he caused it to happen.

solsangraal , in Critics question JD Vance’s ‘weird’ defense of wife Usha after white supremacist attacks

LOL the article mentions nick fuentes, whose name i’ve seen, but don’t know much about, so i looked him up. my favorite:

He has described himself as the “straightest guy” and attempted to defend himself as an incel by claiming that “the only really straight heterosexual position is to be an asexual incel”, as “having sex with women is gay … What’s gayer than being like, ‘I need cuddles. I need kisses … I need to spend time with a woman.’”[30][31][32]

Transporter_Room_3 ,

In the tiny amount of time we have to comprehend our impending doom should the sun explode (we will know in 8ish minutes, the force arrives very shortly after that), they would report “SUN APPEARS TO EXPLODE, WHAT COULD THIS MEAN FOR FUTURE ELECTIONS?”

blakemiller ,

There’s actually legal reasons why publications would pay special care to their word choice like this. The difference between seeming violation and violation comes down to hard proof. Whether we like Elon’s sideshow or not, if there is a defendable claim that his post didn’t violate (e.g. new policy that allows it was approved internally but not yet published publicly), NYT could land themselves in a lawsuit that they have a chance of losing. Then ask yourself how many stories do they publish a day? The risk starts to add up quick.

So the word seeming is doing some heavy lifting there. If you ignore the ass covering, they did still report truth on something important.

catloaf , in The life of two Boeing Starliner astronauts stuck indefinitely in space

Again, they’re not stuck, neither indefinitely nor definitely. The return was on hold to give NASA time to study the equipment before it was jettisoned to burn up in atmosphere. They still have resources (power, water, food, air, etc.) in reserve to last a while longer before they have to leave. (And I’m pretty sure that NASA could resupply them anyway.)

polonius-rex ,

Aurenkin ,

I know I’m arguing semantics here and the rest of your post is probably right but if they unexpectedly don’t have a way to get home right now I think that qualifies as stuck. If there’s no set date where that’s scheduled to change yet they are stuck indefinitely.

superkret ,

They do have a way to get home right now, safely. Their mission was simply changed to staying up longer.

Aurenkin ,

That’s good to hear, in that case I was wrong and I withdraw my objection.

partial_accumen ,

The part of the spacecraft that has the issue they’re researching is the part that has already done its job (getting to the space station). That part isn’t needed for the flight home, and in fact, gets jettisoned not long after departure from the station. Thats the reason they haven’t left yet. If they leave, the part of the spacecraft with the problem gets thrown away and they can’t learn anything more from it.

Is that correct? I thought the simulations being run were to determine if the leaks posed any potential risk during separation, and triple checked multiple times to ensure safety. I didn’t consider it was for data collection

Ah, yes. People enjoying themselves and making art that hurts no one is degenerate. Please, oh enlightened one, what is the proper form art should take? Were Victorian plays with men playing female characters degenerate? What about the Greeks and the Romans (who I should mentioned loved to have sex with men frequently and with vigor)? What point in time was ideal humanity, and when did it start degenerating? Was it only when white men were in power in the US and women couldn’t voice an opinion and black people were property? Please, let me know which time period we should return to to make the sky daddy (or mommy) happy!

    nimomycelium ,
    @nimomycelium@lemmy.world avatar

Not to know what happened before you were born is to remain always a child. Open any history book, perhaps “Mankind and Mother Earth” by Toynbee. Examine the rise, decline, and fall of any of the civilisation. Then come back.

    Cethin ,

I do know history. That’s why I asked with very specific examples of time periods. I know the point of the comment is to be on the offensive because you don’t actually have an answer, but know that I see you.

I know every civilization falls, because that’s a tautology. It has to be the case. That does not mean anything towards your point. The US must fall eventually, even if that’s just the heat death of the universe. Again, admitting this doesn’t provide any reason for why.

Which civilization was the greatest, in your opinion, and at what time? I can promise you they were performing acts both of us would agree were horrible at that moment. “The past” isn’t the best time just because we are past it, and we aren’t necessarily in decline. That can only be decided in the distant future, and it won’t be because of drag shows. It’ll be because of actual policies.

    Cethin ,

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Degenerate_art

For someone who claims to like history, you seem to be missing some major parts. Degenerate art is a specific phrase used by the Nazis during their short time in power. They claimed gays, jews, and other scapegoat groups were degenerate and blamed their issues on them instead of addressing their actual issues. One of their first book burnings was at the Institute of Sexology, which was targeted for it’s study and treatment of homosexual and transgender (at the time more commonly called transexual) people. This was a civilization soon to decline, not the one that was open to new ideas.
