I’d say there could be unintended consequences of tying the teachers’ hands about this. There may be a legitimate reason to discuss almost anything about a child with their parent. It’s amazing anyone would want to do that job given all the things that can land on their plate.

My point wasn’t that credit scores work just fine now. My point was: for a lot of people, the world didn’t work just fine before credit scores.

California law bars ex-LAPD officer Mark Fuhrman, who lied at OJ Simpson trial, from policing (apnews.com)

Former Los Angeles police detective Mark Fuhrman who was convicted of lying on the witness stand in the O.J. Simpson trial three decades ago, is now barred from law enforcement under a California police reform law meant to strip the badges of police officers who act criminally or with bias....

That’s a very specific law.

KEY POINTS

  • Worries are growing that the labor market is beginning to show cracks, particularly for younger aspirants.
  • The monthly rate of workers with little previous work experience getting jobs has plunged, falling to 13% from its previous peak of 20%, according to Goldman Sachs.
  • “Quite honestly, it was pretty brutal,” one job seeker said. “It felt like a lot of work for little response, little reward.”
  • The hiring rate for all workers is at 3.6% of those counted in the labor force, just off the low of the post-Covid era, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Prior to the pandemic, the hiring rate was last below the current level in August 2014.

Never had that problem, but I do hate it that automatics start going when you lift the break rather than when you press the gas (and engage the clutch).

Fresno homeowner starts fire trying to kill spider

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A homeowner in Fresno set his home on fire when trying to kill a spider, the Fresno Fire Department said.

Firefighters say they responded to a structure fire in west Fresno over the weekend.

According to fire officials, a homeowner had accidentally started the fire using a torch to exterminate a spider. Nobody reported injuries after the incident, and crews were able to prevent the fire from damaging more of the home.

“We get it, we don’t like spiders either, but it’s never a good idea to use a blow torch or any other flammable device for pest control,” firefighters said in a social media post.

The Fresno Fire Department encourages residents to use safer methods or contact a professional to eliminate spiders or any pests in their homes.

Linux on old School Machines?

Hi all, the private school I work at has a tonne of old windows 7/8 era desktops in a student library. The place really needs upgrades but they never seem to prioritise replacing these machines. Ive installed Linux on some older laptops of mine and was wondering if you all think it would be worth throwing a light Linux distro on...

Got with Xfce edition of either EndeavourOS (Arch based) or Mint (Ubuntu based). They’re both easy to set up.

XFCE is a lightweight desktop environment with all you’d expect from a Windows 7 machine (and more).

Discussion topic: Why do the Borg need to assimilate entire cultures to gain the features of their biological distinctiveness and unique technologies?

The Borg have transporter technology of some sort. They could easily abduct select people from orbit and leave, but instead they invade planets and assimilate every person. It seems highly inefficient to me....

Zachariah ,

The Borg are wise enough to know culture only exists in individuals, so you can’t get the whole culture unless you get all the individuals.

Yes, and the master should be a paraphrase not a password.

But if the point is to remember it, then you should use the security from length of series of 5+ random words. It’s easier to remember, write down, and type. All great characteristics of a master passphrase.

Very short answer with little nuance:

Cops can arrest you for anything and are not required to know the laws. A court will sort that out. If there isn’t a specific law, the court can convict based on similar laws.

A strike is underway within the University of California (UC) system — with UCLA, UC Davis and UC Santa Cruz all now participating — as unionized graduate student workers take collective action to protest the brutalization and repression of fellow union members and Palestine solidarity protesters.

With academic employees unionized with the United Auto Workers (UAW) walking out at all three schools, the UC administration has found itself contending with the consequences of its decision to invite state aggression upon its own students as they protested the ongoing genocide perpetrated by Israel in the Gaza Strip and West Bank. Those consequences appear to be piling up, with additional union workforces at UC San Diego and UC Santa Barbara set to join the strike on Monday, and UC Irvine workers walking off the job on Wednesday, according to UAW 4881.

Does Trump being found guilty actually matter?

Since he can still run for office and become president while in prison, is this actually going to do anything to stop him from being president? Obviously it’s not gonna sway anyone who’s gonna vote for him, so is there any actual way this keeps him from office, or at least has some positive effect for us? I wanna join the...
