DigitalNeighbor , (edited ) in New Report Argues Private Rail Is a Train Wreck, Public Ownership Needed

Germany has the same problems. After the reunification they merged the east and west state railway companies into a private enterprise, the Deutsche Bahn AG. Since then, the service progressively became worse and the prices unaffordable.

They engaged in a downward spiral of cutting infrastructure investments and reducing coverage/offer and having less private travellers. Now the infrastructure is such a bad state, that the bad quality of the service is a running gag in Germany. Voyagers now expect their train being late and hope that it will not be cancelled last minute.

In the last couple of years, there has been a push to invested in the infrastructure, but it’s too little too late and it’s going to take decades to make the train an attractive option again.

One of the reason why they are still getting by financially, is because the have very good marketing.

Here’s a good video about it. It’s in German, but you can get the English auto-translation.

Cosmonauticus ,

As an American living in NRW, German trains are a well oiled machine compared to their US counterparts. Our trains constantly derail, catch fire, break down etc. I love having S-bahn, U-bahn, and RE compared to the underfunded death traps that are Amtrack, and major city subway systems. It sucks occasionally but I don’t fear for my life on a German train

AmbiguousProps , in After Supreme Court immunity ruling, Biden draws sharp contrast with Trump on obeying rule of law

Biden literally has the power to do something now, but is instead using this to campaign? Infuriating, we got you in office already, to protect against this exact thing from happening. Stop sitting on your ass and do something if you want the American public to forget the debate.

andrewta ,

Name a specific thing that you want Biden to do to fix this problem.

Mun_Walker ,

Murder political opponents with seal team 6. Lol

andrewta ,

The seal team would call that an illegal order under the ucmj. Hidden couldn’t be prosecuted for giving the order, but the seal team would say no.

girlfreddy ,

Biden could legally hire mercs to do the job and never once get called out on it.

AmbiguousProps ,

Has the ruling not fully sunk in for you yet? He could legally find a way to do anything now. He could make it legal and override the ucmj. The hired guns (SEALs or mercs), in this hypothetical, would not say no. Especially not from the commander in chief with new dictator-level powers.

AshMan85 ,

Yeah a lot people don’t understand how serious this is.

So, what happens when he officially declares mar-a-lago a threat to national security and takes it out? Because before this ruling, he could’ve been imprisoned at the very least. But somehow it’s still the same now, even after this ruling? If that’s the case, then why did the Supreme Court even rule?

Cosmicomical ,

RaoulDook ,

That’s pretty simple, he could walk outside the White House, declare to the public “I’m on a fuckin’ smoke break bitches” and immediately punch a child in the face. This would be an Unofficial act of the President and a violent crime.

samus12345 ,

Anything, because the SCOTUS decides what is and isn’t “official.” Democrat does it = unofficial. Republican does it = official.

AmbiguousProps , (edited )

First off, he’s the one in office, not me. He’s the one we voted to in to fix this and he hasn’t done that. He already campaigned on the fact that we had to prevent a dictatorship in the last election. He’s had four years to figure out what to do. That’s the issue at hand here.

Secondly, he can now legally do anything. So use your creative juices, it’s pretty obvious that he can do something, especially now. Not only was Trump given keys to a dictatorship, Biden was given those same exact keys. It’s time to play hardball.

eran_morad ,

Bonskreeskreeskree ,

Official acts as president. Not unofficial. Official could be seen as airstriking another country. Unofficial can easily be interpreted as trying to steal the election. Yet most of you are out here advocating for biden to set precedent of assassinating an opponent… really makes you wonder what narrative some people are trying to push. Surely seems like destabilizing the remaining bit of a country we have.

LoreleiSankTheShip ,

As an outsider looking at American politics right now, I don’t see you getting out of a dictatorship and civil war without a lot of realpolitik from the democrats. Assassination may be extreme and strategically unsound for the dems (making Trump a martyr), but as I understand it, it would be feasible to, for example, add 10 more people to the SC, wouldn’t it? Or change electoral laws to make it so convicted felons can’t run for office? Maybe changing first past the post and abolishing the electoral college? I admit I am fairly ignorant of the American system, but wouldn’t those be achievable to Biden if he set his mind to it and damned the consequences (since he can’t be prosecuted for those anyways?)

Cosmicomical ,

Are you a bot or are you just blind? Wait for trump to go to office with this power and let’s see how nobody gets victimized.

Bonskreeskreeskree ,

Are you blind? The person said we are currently being victimized. I point out that’s not true and your response is just wait and see??

Cosmicomical ,

Trump has already released a list of people he wants to jail, including biden. You are not being victimized yet but they are telling you clearly what is going to happen.

Bonskreeskreeskree ,

Asafum ,

The supreme court are the only ones responsible for their own ethics. We just recently tried to force this.

We’re literally a fucking joke of a country. Supreme court “justices” don’t even need any experience whatsoever. You or I could be a justice.

TreeGhost ,

So they say, but they also just said the president had immunity for official acts. If Biden did this while at the same time urging Congress to pass judicial ethics laws, who could stop him? Hell, expand it to the federal court system and tell the committee to move fast and prioritize the most unethical judges in key positions and either the Republicans have to play ball with Democrats on passing judicial reform through law or the remaining sane judges reverse a few key decisions to unfuck our current judicial quandary.

JovialMicrobial , (edited )

I agree on this one. The Supreme Court is clearly compromised and needs to be thoroughly investigated for corruption and have their recent, self interest driven rulings revoked.
It’d be a super presidential act that’d definitely benefit all of us. Guess they can’t charge him for breaking the rules to fix this cluster fuck.

HurlingDurling ,

The supreme court has basically given Biden the power to act as a King now, then take advantage and…

  1. Dismantle the supreme court, and start the process of HIM choosing who will be the new supreme court.
  2. Imprison all who seek out to destroy our democracy for financial gain.
  3. Forgive all student loans
  4. Change the constitution to codify roe vs wade
  5. Give all homeless a home by taking away property for rent that’s been on the market for more than 6 months.
  6. Dismantle or block the entirety of Project 2025.
  7. Make law that no entity can legally own more than 5 or 10 properties.
  8. Make law that no one that has been recently convicted of a crime in the last year can run for any office (much less the president).
  9. Force term limits on congress and the house.
  10. Force term limits on the supreme court.
  11. Stop treating coorporations as people.
  12. Codify the chrevron ruling that got overturned.
  13. Forgive all medical debts and make Medicaid for all to all americans.
  14. Delist any news organization that either overly exaggerates or lies to the public (ie. Fox, Newsmax, CNN).
  15. Let NOAA make their weather app they wanted.
  16. Implement the green new deal properly now.

Use the weapons of your enemy against them.

There probably more this to add, hut that’s just on the top of my mind.

he can do literally anything now wtf

andrewta ,

He is above the law and can’t be prosecuted, but others still can be.

Ex. he issues an order to seal team six to kill trump.

Biden can’t be charged for that. But seal team six is still governed by the ucmj. Killing a non combatant for no reason even if the commander in chief gives the order might be a bit of a problem under the ucmj.

There’s also the oath you take when you join the military

“Defend the constitution of the United States of America against all enemies foreign and domestic”. Killing a political opponent might be a bit of a problem when a person actually looks at that oath.

The seal team would probably say no for both of the above reasons. Biden couldn’t be charged but others still can be.

andrewta ,

but here is another problem : while biden couldn’t be prosecuted for issuing the order, would the order hold up in court? you know the thing would go before the supreme court. would it hold up there?

    Hmmm…

Looking beyond the average, production/non-supervisory workers—roughly the bottom 82% of the wage distribution—started seeing positive real wage growth two months earlier in March 2023, now 14 months in a row (not shown).

Between 2019 and 2023, low-wage workers experienced historically fast real wage growth. The 10th percentile real hourly wage grew 12.1% over the four-year period. This tremendous real wage growth at the lower end of the wage distribution was exceptional, significantly faster than in any other business cycle peak since 1979.

But keep replying please because I could put your exact comments in the COVID threads I was arguing in back then. It’s uncanny. It’s the exact same shit conservatives say when data doesn’t support their preconceived idea.

Come on back when you have some data. Byeee

    Fungah ,

Is there a place to put comments like this? Some kind of “how to lose an argument” community?

If you disagree with the numbers you can argue them coherently. Like, that’s how facts work. If there are issues with the data you make a compelling argument by pointing them out. Data doesn’t give a fuck about your feelings, refusing to contribute meaningfully to the argument doesn’t make you superior, it makes you look like an idiot, and doubling down on your refusal to engage meaningfully with the content makes you look even dumber.

You have time to hand wave away shit you don’t agree with but don’t have time to make.a cogent argument? You’re too good for.it.all when you’re called out for it? Is it maybe because.you don’t understand economics?

Because I sure as fuck don’t. But I do understand that its a real academic.discipline that involves lots of real math that I also.don’t understand. And while I take most.of what I read on the internet with a grain of salt people in this thread that do appear to understand some of those things are indicating this Dara is likely correct. And those arguing that it isnt don’t appear to be able to articulate why.

So my own conclusion is that there’s probably.something to this. But it doesnt really matter if there is or isnt, really, because I’ll never do anything with the info. Still, I choose to see this as a glimmer of.hope in troubling times.

Although if you are able to articulate your “all economics.is bullshit” theory, I’m pretty sure the many many doctorate holders in economics would love to have you destroy their field of study. You could usher in a revolution in economics. You could create whole new academic.disciplines, and do to.economics.what the scientific method did to natural.philosophy. In that case, don’t you have an intellectual duty to lay out.your argument?

Unless of course its just hand waving bullshit.

    afraid_of_zombies ,

    I like data as well.

    bls.gov/…/civilian-labor-force-participation-rate…

You will notice that not only has the US not returned to pre-housing crisis levels it hasn’t even returned to March 2020 levels.

Now go ahead and try to hand wave this way.

    capital ,

This is cool and all but the post is about wage growth in the past 12 months.

It’s like if the post said, “did you know 1+1=2?” and you came along saying, “Yeah well 2+2=4”. It’s not a counter argument to the statement in the post title. It’s another statistic altogether.

Now go ahead and try to hand wave this way.

No, handwaving would be saying something like, “well I haven’t experienced this and also none of my friends have so it’s not happening”.

So, interesting stat which is relevant in a larger context but doesn’t mean the post is factually incorrect.

The captain saw him drunk and when the first mate was sober, showed him the following entry in the ship’s log: “The first mate was drunk today.” “Captain please don’t let that stay in the log”, the mate said. “This could add months or years to my becoming a captain myself.” “Is it true?” asked the captain, already knowing the answer. “Yes, its true” the mate said. “Then if it is true it has to go in the log. That’s the rule. If its true it goes into the log, end of discussion” said the captain sternly. Weeks later, it was the first mate’s turn to make the log entries. The first mate wrote: “The ship seems in good shape. The captain was sober today"

It is worth noting that the article itself does bring employment rate into it, stating that the reason for the real wages spiking like that did in 2020 was the lower wage employees leaving work, thus raising the average wage.

I haven’t seen the data on employment rate, but if the bottom end of employees are still not back to being as employed as they were at the start of the pandemic, then that may be keeping average wages higher than they’d otherwise be

    Triasha ,

The article is real and “shit still sucks” can both be true.

Growing up my family could pile into a van for a 2 week road trip or Disney vacation every summer. My grandparents were still working at that time, grandfather was a small business owner mechanic. Grandmother was a part time bookkeeper for a non profit.

To have that financial independence today, I would need triple my income, or my wife and I would need to double our income.

I figure a decade+ of real wage gains across the economy would approximate that. Maybe not for me personally, but for the average.

    afraid_of_zombies ,

violence, an act of physical force that causes or is intended to cause harm. The damage inflicted by violence may be physical, psychological, or both. Violence may be distinguished from aggression, a more general type of hostile behaviour that may be physical, verbal, or passive in nature.

Secondly, that’s about Arizona law and this happened in New York City.

Are you trying to claim that throwing liquids at somebody you dislike is legal in NY?

I don’t even understand what point you’re trying to get at. Are you claiming it’s fine to just toss random liquids at others? My point is they both broke the law, they both should be impartially judged for it. How and why is that even controversial?
