HelixDab2 , in Gun violence is fueling national trauma, surgeon general warns

While mass-shooting deaths account for just 1 percent of firearm fatalities, they play an outsize role in how safe Americans are feeling, Murthy said.

Yeah, no shit. And this is even worse when you consider that the overwhelming majority of mass shootings–which are defined by the gov’t as four or more people shot (not necessarily killed), not including the shooter–are gang violence or ordinary crime (robbery, etc.). So the kind of mass shootings that people worry about are, statistically speaking, relative to the number of people that live in the US, *very, very rare. When you look at the kind of targeted, mass-casualty events that happen annually in the US, you’re looking at odds that are similar to winning a jackpot in the lottery.

It’s not that mass shootings are realistically a problem that most people will have to face, but people freak out about them because they’re on the news all the time–if it bleeds, it leads–and because it feels more random than, say, a serious car accident. Despite serious car accidents being more common by multiple orders of magnitude.

It’s fundamentally a perception issue.

BigBenis , in America’s housing crisis continues to worsen, renters are struggling more than homeowners, report says

How would people here feel about a tax that increases in rate per-property owned? People and organizations can still own as many properties as they want, but at some point they’re going to be taxed so much it’ll be impossible to profit off of them.

bcgm3 ,

I’m not sure. Realizing I had no idea how much wealth the truly wealthy possess has been a reoccurring theme from the past few years. I think I’d rather see some hard limitations on who can own what.

That’s functionally how the homestead exemption works already

they’re going to be taxed so much it’ll be impossible to profit off of them.

I would simply start a PAC with all my extra money and bribe/coerce politicians into reducing the tax rates.

EatATaco ,

That’s functionally how the homestead exemption works already

Unless I’m mistaken, that’s just a small tax break you get on the taxes on your primary residence. After that, it makes no difference the number of properties you own, their taxes stay the same.

capital_sniff ,

Until we actually remove republicans and republican lites from the legislature I highly doubt we’ll see any progressive tax reforms, like actually taxing the rich. You could probably find more support for expanding house buying programs. Stuff like lowering the down payment requirements, and or give a large grant for a portion of the house value if it is high and it could be clawed back at sale.

Bytemeister ,

Personally, I’d prefer a monthly fine for unfilled housing, that is based on the rate you are charging for it. Landlord wants to jack your rent up 20%? If you leave, they pay a fine, based on that amount until they fill the unit. The fines go to subsidizing housing costs, so there is a self-balancing system. Right now, with property values increasing at insane rates, owners don’t really need to rent to break even, which leaves them free to price gouge their tenants. There is little pressure pushing rates back down, and there is all the freedom in the world to jack them up as high as you want.

EatATaco ,

The problem right now is one of supply and demand, not because corporations are buying up too many properties. It’s the other way around where corporations are buying up properties, because due to not increasing supply, and demand continue rising, it’s a good investment.

We need more high density housing all over the place. I live in a nice little town right outside a large US city. We have a train right into the city, and a nice little downtown area that could certainly use more business. They have been trying to put up apartment buildings, but the NIMBY-ism is through the roof. It’s like every little attempt to add more housing, people start whining to high heavens how it is killing our “small town” feel. I mean, I get it, I moved here for a reason, but something has got to give.

I can only imagine what’s happening in more rural areas where everyone wants their big lots and single homes.

So I don’t really oppose increasing taxes per home, but I don’t think it’s really going to solve the issue of increasing home prices as that’s not the root of the issue.

TwentySeven ,

It’s already like that where I live. It’s called the homestead exemption – property taxes are cut in half if it’s your primary residence

Pacattack57 ,

The homestead exemption is not a tax. It is a discount on tax. Therefore there is no penalty for owning extra homes. Landlords not only benefit from the homestead exemption but also get you to pay the property taxes on the house you’re renting.

TwentySeven ,

Extra tax on non resident properties vs discounted tax on your residence. As far as I can tell, it’s the exact same thing

MehBlah , (edited ) in 4 questions answered about the software cyberattacks affecting car dealerships

This will probably be your standard someone’s exposed password compromised CDK’s network but bare in mind the staffing situation at a car dealership. For the most part you have the regular mix of personalities and capabilities that you see at any business. Except a car dealership has one dept that has a higher number than normal of clueless posers. The sales staff. Considering my experience doing IT work for a dealerships I can tell you the biggest security hole is the sales staff. What a bunch of techless fools. just take this one example.

I installed a mesh wireless system at one dealership in 2012. Did it right with a separate vlan for the guest ssid. I also at the owners request set the qos lower on the guest network to prevent a guest from hogging the bandwidth. I ended up with a loss on the job due to all the complaints from the sales weenies. Here is a sample list of their complaints.

  1. Its slow
  2. Its so slow
  3. Its not working

No specifics just nice generalizations and a complete lack of understanding that what they were doing at the time it was slow was important to being able to work the problem. None of them, not one would let me do some tests using their phone. They didn’t want their porn habits to be known I guess.

The situation was always just two things. Half of them were convinced that you never saved the wireless connection since one half wit there said one time the reason why your phone couldn’t connect to WiFi quickly sometimes was that you had too many saved connections. They just used the guest network which was heavily rate limited. They were told this many times but sales staff are not hired for their comprehension skills. Just the ability lie and manipulate in a pleasant way to the customers. Since I was not a customer they were as rude as any group of humans can be.

The other major thing at that time was they all were asshole buddies who had some of the stupidest status one ups. One of them was that they had to have the latest IOS update the day it came out. Of course millions of other people were grabbing the update that day. They just couldn’t comprehend that just having fast internet didn’t guarantee that apple would let them have the update at that speed. I had a iPhone at that time and they would ask how long it took me to get the update and I would just laugh and say I’ll get it in a few weeks after all of you have tested it for apple.

All of the above leads to the ol straw that broke the camels back. I had already lost money on the deal due to all the complaints I had to deal with. One IOS update broke the phones. They called angry that the WiFi broke their iphones. I told them it was the apple update that broke them not the wireless. Apple had already released a fix but these guys insisted I come out there and fix the wireless. I refused saying that it was clearly a issue with apple. The GM there called the police on me accusing me of sabotage/hacking. I get a call from the local PD who I also did work for asking me what was going on. After I got through explaining that they were idiots I called the owner and told him I would be out the next day to remove the equipment and give him a refund for it.

He asked why and I told him what the sales staff were saying and how the GM called the chief of police on me. All due to their stupidity. He told me that it works great for him every time he is there and I wouldn’t hear any more complaints. I later learned he drove from his other dealership two counties over and reamed the sales staff and GM out. Told them that if they had a problem with the WiFi to call him. I did note the next time I was there I only had to deal with the office staff who I had never had any trouble with. The sales staff and the GM made a production number our of ignoring me.

jpreston2005 , in My Health Insurance Company Is Trying To Kill Me

When I started my first “real” job, where I got health insurance, it was an absolute nightmare trying to find a therapist through their network. I remember having to call them to figure out if they would cover visits to a specialist in trauma. Sat on hold for an hour and 45 minutes, just to get some random woman who would NOT give me any information until I told her “why” I needed to see a therapist.

After trying unsuccessfully to skip past the question, she kept asking, so I said fine, and trauma dumped all over her. I’ll save you the details, but I could tell she was shaken once I finished. After all that bullshit, she still couldn’t even tell me if the provider was covered or not, and instead sent me a 90 page non-searchable PDF listing a bunch of random therapists in random order located all over the state (which was negative help). I was so upset I just hung up on her.

Medicare for all. Health insurance is a scam that bankrupts Americans, puts barriers between you and care, and actively harms all of us collectively.

It is so fucking bullshit in every way. I cannot comprehend why someone would have a problem with single-payer, which is so much better by comparison than what we have to do now.

The only thing I can think is “but I might wind up with slightly less coverage than my work currently provides,” which is also practically impossible for all but the very upper crust…

They say neither Pennsylvania nor the nation can afford to lose small towns and the institutions that power them.

Lol, why?

Not only are they a touchstone of American life,

Very often a hard and poverty stricken life.

but they are also key to driving certain sectors of the economy, like agriculture.

What’s stopping farms from being built next to suburbs or even within cities with the tech we have now.

These boomers are why over romanticizing how “good” small town life was. What they’re really sad about is disproportionate political power our anti democratic electoral college gave them and the unchecked tin pot dictatorships they often held over small towns. Being able to get away with literal murder sometimes because they personally knew the cops and judges.

They couldn’t care less about the poor quality of life that most citizens of these small towns had. If they did they would have made the necessary investments to attract people (like a handful of small towns have).

Moneo ,

Possible tin hat explanation: Suburbs/small towns lean conservative so preserving them is essential for conservatives to retain power.

Yawweee877h444 , in Black women say an Amtrak project threatens their Baltimore neighborhood’s homes — and children

I dont understand why the title of the article has to start with “black women…”. It’s just weird to me. Is it really specifically black women? Even if it is, how does that add to the content/subject? I don’t get it. It’s just fucking people, members of a neighborhood, mothers who care about their kids. Idk.

mosiacmango , (edited )

Read up on redlining and where the US installed its highways in cities in the 50/60/70s.

In almost every case, they cut right down the middle of a black neighborhood, a neighborhood that people had been forced into living in due to redlining. This of course destroyed the neighborhood, and made any adjacent homes and buisnesses highly undesirable, gutting black and minority wealth again and again and forcing those residents to live next to road/noise pollution.

Leading off by acknowledging that this may be a modern day case of the same practice is why they added a “black woman” to the headline.

I personally read this as a case of nimbyism, as most of their complaints aren’t based on likely issues, but i can understand the distrust the community has for this kind of project.

Duamerthrax ,
curiousaur ,

Because when choosing where to build infrastructure projects like these, poor and minority neighborhoods are usually chosen over richer or white neighborhoods.
