Researchers will be studying Trump and his followers for decades to come. A gold mine of data to help them better understand the mechanisms of authoritarian populism and cognitive dissonance.

ikidd , in Maui ponders its future as leaders consider restricting vacation rentals loved by tourists
@ikidd@lemmy.world avatar

Here’s what’ll happen:

  1. Restrict units via permit system
  2. Prices go up because of lower supply
  3. Permit holders lobby for increased restriction
  4. Only people with one foot in government get permits
  5. Prices go up further
  6. Home prices never change because someone might mange to get a permit.

MehBlah , in ‘Too many old people’: A rural Pa. town reckons with population loss

The town I was born in is dying and its been going on since I was a kid. They were a wood mill town with three plants. They have made every bad decision that they could make. Turned down a paper mill and college before I was born. Turned down two manufacturing plants and a wal-mart after I was born. Consistently resisted chain restaurants and stores even after I had grown up and left. Then the world changed, manufacturing and new opportunities dried up completely and they still cling to the old way of doing things because they can’t see they are the problem.

Now its just a shell full of empty lots and rotting houses. The local mayor is still associated with the old families but still is only interested in protecting what they have. They keep getting elected and the place continues to deteriorate. In their minds its due to people like me leaving and all the poor and their children who are still clinging to bones of that town. Not their fault though. How could it be? They are better than everyone else.

This is the state of far too many small towns in the US today.

Yeah I see this happening. Just like our governor in Oklahoma made it illegal to out law plastic bags when one city voted to do just that.

Yawweee877h444 , in Biden stung by student loan legal loss days before taking effect

I always wonder if this was by design. What I mean is, Biden and them knew it would most certainly fail in this way, yet it looks good during the election year because “at least he tried”. I have no evidence for this, just tin foil hat speculation.

He prob wants to campaign on “I’ll get it through, just need a second term”

rusticus ,

No pretty sure he’ll campaign correctly on “save your democracy and give me a second term”. Only the Confederates would disagree.

Fedizen ,

the supreme court literally rewrote an existing law to overturn the original ruling. Like it explicitly says “the debt can be forgiven in a crisis” and was used by the trump admin to halt interest payments the supreme court ruling was literally going “not like this!”. Read the dissent on that case it points out how insane the ruling is.

If you hold your Nazi meeting at a Dairy Queen, and people show up to protest your Nazism, the news article should not be about the disgraceful attacks on Dairy Queen. When they are, and nobody mentions the reason why the protest was actually there, it is blatant propaganda. The fancy new term being “fake news”.

MagicShel , in Analysis: The fertility crisis is here and it will permanently alter the economy | CNN Business

Half my life was spent fearing the result of limitless population growth and contemplating the inevitability of war and famine to shock population levels back down to sustainable levels. They warned us about this starting at least as far back as the sixties.

I see organic population collapse as a categorically good thing.

LibertyLizard ,

Long-term, possibly. But if the collapse happens too quickly it may cause a lot of issues. A slow steady decline would be best but may be difficult to achieve.

uberdroog , in U.S. surgeon general declares gun violence a public health crisis
@uberdroog@lemmy.world avatar

Surprised it’s even legal. Let the conservative hoop jumping commence.

Kaboom , in U.S. surgeon general declares gun violence a public health crisis

Didnt we already go down this path, and it was found that it was already covered by multiple other agencies, and the Surgeon General had no jurisdiction?

uberdroog ,
@uberdroog@lemmy.world avatar

Congress effectively barred the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) from funding gun violence research. It wasn’t until 2019 that Congress ended the two-decade freeze with $25 million in annual funding.

PapaStevesy ,

The Surgeon General doesn’t have jurisdiction to declare a public health crisis? Seems like exactly their jurisdiction. It’s not like they’re trying to pass or enforce any laws. Plus those other agencies are clearly derelict of duty, so I’m all for the any functional agencies doing whatever they can to force positive change on this troglodytic tire fire of a nation.

Kaboom ,

Not on crimes, no.

PapaStevesy ,

They didn’t say there’s a public health crisis “on crimes,” they said there’s a public health crisis of gun violence, which is obviously very accurate. I’m not sure if you’re aware, but when it comes to public health, guns can actually only have a negative impact. That’s how they’re designed.

Kaboom ,

So is inflation an epidemic too? How about climate change? It all affects health! We should let the SG pass any law he wants!

stringere ,

Inflation doesn’t directly affect health like bullets do.

You fucking troglodyte.

librejoe ,

I would argue that it does actually.

It reduces the access to heathy food and health products that have a long-term impact on your health

PapaStevesy , (edited )

Again, they didn’t pass a law, they’re not a legislative body.

But you bring up a good point, climate change is a public health crisis. I’d actually be worried if the Surgeon General wasn’t worried about it. Inflation’s just a symptom of capitalism though, you gotta get to the root of the problem if you want real change.

librejoe ,

Who said the SG was passing laws.

Sprawlie ,

So is inflation an epidemic too?

Yes… Not the point you’re trying to make I guess.

We should let the SG pass any law he wants!

SG isn’t passing any laws. They are making a statement.
