Blackmist , in Israeli soldiers who drove with wounded Palestinian tied to their vehicle 'violated orders', military says

It’s that because their orders were “kill them all, take no prisoners”?

sndmn , in Israeli army strapped wounded Palestinian to jeep

I’m sure Israel will thoroughly investigate this crime and punish whoever took the video.

wtfrank , in Israeli soldiers who drove with wounded Palestinian tied to their vehicle 'violated orders', military says

Is this “IDF terrorists using Palestinian as human shield” or “IDF rushing wanted man for medical treatment” or both?

IndustryStandard ,

A civilian got shot, likely by Israel. They, strapped him to the hood, prevented the Palestinian ambulances from taking him, drove away and then ditched the guy. So just the Human shield part.

DaBabyAteMaDingo ,

The very article that’s used states they took him to a hospital and he was a suspected militant.

Now this is Israel’s report but you can’t just hand wave facts and statements.

IndustryStandard ,

"

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society said Israeli soldiers initially prevented paramedics from treating the man.

He was eventually transferred to an ambulance and taken to hospital.

"

The jeep did not take him to a hospital. I recommend watching the video in the article too. Makes the situation very clear.

DaBabyAteMaDingo , (edited )

Why would not give a suspected militant to the Red crescent?..

Edit to add links that prove you wrong:

timesofisrael.com/idf-says-it-is-investigating-so…

“However, he was later handed over to the Red Crescent.”

dailymail.co.uk/…/Disgust-footage-emerges-wounded…

“He was eventually transferred to the Red Crescent for treatment.”

www.cnn.com/2024/06/23/middleeast/…/index.html

“He was transferred to the Red Crescent to receive medical treatment, the Israeli military added.”

IndustryStandard ,

Indeed eventually. After they initially prevented the Red Crescent from helping the man.

Did you watch the video in the article? The footage makes it very clear the soldiers are not helping the man into an ambulance.

DaBabyAteMaDingo ,

I was obliterating your failed attempt to make it seem like IDF didn’t give this man to the Red Crescent. You lied.

But my point is you wouldn’t give a suspected militant back to the organization. That is a stupid thing to do. My opinion is that they took him to IDF medical treatment, cleared this man of any militant ties and transferred him to the RC after they knew he wasn’t a threat. Is that how you treat a human shield?

IndustryStandard ,

You can see the IDF weaving past the ambulance not handing him over in the video.

DaBabyAteMaDingo ,

Yes. Are you familiar with the concept of time?

IndustryStandard ,

It must work different in Israel.

DaBabyAteMaDingo ,

Not really. I claimed the IDF didn’t give the suspect over for reasons and when their suspicions were wrong, they gave him back. And each moment the earth moves, time passes.

You keep getting stuck in a time loop by repeating the same thing. It’s like you’re dumb af or something.

DaBabyAteMaDingo ,

I appreciate you actually engaging with this in good faith unlike the other lemmings (fitting lol) here.

I bet. Bad faith actors love being taken at face value.

FlyingSquid , in GOP resolution calls on SCOTUS to ‘intervene’ in Trump’s hush money case
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t think it’s even within SCOTUS’ ability to do anything about this state-level ruling.

Not that “you can’t legally do that” has ever been a barrier to Republicans before.

NeptuneOrbit ,

Sadly I think original jurisdiction of SCOTUS means they could choose to jump the line and hear the case. However it would be unprecedented to do so as a) they don’t have time to review every state felony case and b) his lawyers have yet to actually make a case that the trial was performed wrongly.

But in this case, Trump does want an appeal, but probably can’t wait til June '25 to have it

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t know enough about this subject clearly, but has there ever been a similar situation where SCOTUS overturned a case like this? Not against a former president, obviously, but that shouldn’t be relevant. There have been other cases where political candidates have been convicted of violating state campaign finance laws. Has SCOTUS ever intervened?

NeptuneOrbit ,

I don’t think so, but they have also used their shadow docket more and more to do things that are unprecedented. It’s not 100% unbelievable.

girlfreddy OP ,
@girlfreddy@lemmy.ca avatar

Steve Vladeck wrote a book about that … The Shadow Docket: How the Supreme Court Uses Stealth Rulings to Amass Power and Undermine the Republic.

In a CNN interview he also said that “for the first 200 years of the Supreme Court’s existence, Congress was regularly involved in conversations about the shape and size of the court’s docket, which kinds of cases the court was hearing, how much business it was conducting”. One wonders why that oversight stopped.

BackOnMyBS , in Rip currents kill 4 in 48 hours: Panama City Beach on pace to be deadliest in US
@BackOnMyBS@lemmy.autism.place avatar

As far as I understand, rip currents rapidly pull someone out to sea only. If someone finds themselves in one, the solutions are to either (a) swim parallel to the coast to get out of the rip current, then swim back to shore, or (b) stay calm, float, and wave for help. Regardless, nothing is forcing someone underwater. Are people that die in rip currents not good swimmers/floaters or panicking?

Growing up in Florida, I’ve known how to swim practically my whole life, which is pretty common here among natives. Are all these people drowning in rip currents this year visitors or transplants from other states like the the four unfortunate men in this article?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I’m guessing panicking. And as the article says, these are tourists.

Revonult ,

There are still waves. Imagine if the sea isn’t calm. People already can’t stay alive forever in the water. This might not be a “fresh” capable person after a long day of sun and swimming. Add the panic of rapidly being sucked out to open water. Even the strongest swimmers could succumb in certain conditions. Even if you get out how long can most people tred water and fight waves for?

BackOnMyBS ,
@BackOnMyBS@lemmy.autism.place avatar

I’m not trying to victim blame at all, so I’m certain there’s something I’m not understanding. Seriously, a person can easily float in sea water for 30 mins no problem. My grandma would do it everytime we went to the beach. Fill your lungs up, lay back, slowly paddle your feet, and chill. It would be different with major waves, but the panhandle usually has pretty calm waters.

Revonult ,

It depends alot on body fat content. Fat floats. My BIL is very slim and muscular and he sinks like a rock.

BeMoreCareful ,

Not in salt water.

Revonult ,

Sea water is about 3 to 3.5% denser than fresh. So you are right you float better in normal sea water but not by much. So he still sinks. Although, the dead sea which 9.6 times as salty at sea water gets to 24% heavier.

shalafi ,

I live up here. Water’s as flat as it gets once past the tiny breakers. I’m certain these are cases of people panicking and trying to swim back to shore.

No idea how to educate visitors. LOL, I’m sure municipalities don’t want giant billboards with a death tally, but that would get attention.

shalafi ,

Fighting is exactly why they die. There’s about no one that is strong enough to swim back.
