Rapidcreek , in Biden highlights business deals and pays respects at John McCain memorial to wrap up Vietnam visit

I’m not 80, but US > India > Vietnam > US would pretty much fry me.

Benelaus ,

That was my first thought as well. But my second thought is, why the fuck do we have these super old ppl in office??

Rapidcreek ,

Let’s see. They want to serve the public. They gather the ingredients necessary to run for public office. They win. They get experience and become subject matter policy experts. They get re-elected. Basicly, they do things. But, they don’t sit around and bitch about age.

hark , in Why autoworkers' leader is calling for a 4-day work week from Big 3 car makers
@hark@lemmy.world avatar

Long overdue. People are so conditioned to the 40+ hour week that they will immediately say they’ll settle for 4 10-hour days, and while I would like even that (because I work remote and could essentially make it 4 8-hour days), it’s just not good enough after all these years of the ownership class sucking up all the benefits of productivity gains. Honestly, we should be on 24-hour weeks by this point, but 32 hours is a start. Unfortunately, this is being presented as an outrageous demand from various outlets. I wish them the best in their fight for worker rights.

dingus , in Google's dominance of internet search faces major challenge in legal showdown with U.S. regulators
@dingus@lemmy.ml avatar

Google’s dominance of internet search is being challenged by how fucking useless the results have become in the last ten years.

As much as government regulation is important, you can almost always rely on a capitalist business to run themselves into the ground in pursuit of profit above all else.

girlfreddy , in Local officials call on Congress to reject larger trucks on highway

This is simply Congress’ solution to a truck driver shortage … allow longer, heavier trailers that will create more toxic CO2 levels and disaster-level gridlocks in major cities.

Congress really aren’t the sharpest tools in the shed.

Cleverdawny ,

A single, heavier truck is going to be more efficient than two lighter trucks. And create less gridlock.

I don’t doubt that this has something to do with the driver shortage but that doesn’t mean this is a bad idea. In fact, it might be a good one.

Hawke , (edited )

I say we go all the way and use even smaller numbers of extremely large trucks, and put them on specialized roads made out of two metal rails. I bet the efficiency of these “rail roads” would be far far superior!

Cleverdawny ,

Railroads are great and we should encourage investment in those.

BombOmOm ,
@BombOmOm@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, they are pretty heavily used for anything that needs to go hub to hub on a ‘when it gets there’ schedule. However, I find it ironic that the majority of pro-train individuals complain heavily about cargo trains making the train system worse.

Hawke ,

It’s not the cargo trains that make the system worse, it’s the prioritization of cargo over passenger rail along with lack of investment. If they spent even half the money on rail that they do on automobile roads we’d have one hell of a good rail system.

The highway system costs 200-400 billion dollars a year split between state and federal government.

Meanwhile Amtrak gets about 1.5 billion dollars from the federal government.

Cethin ,

It’s pretty simple. More investment to build more robust and more connected lines. High traffic lines could be multiple rails wide, so faster passenger trains (which are time sensitive) can pass slower freight trains.

The issue with our rail infrastructure is that lines have been reduced over and over. Also, despite legally amtrak being given priority, they rarely do get it. Freight trains are often too long to be able to let them pass, so they are no longer legally required to get out of the way, because there isn’t an alternative for them.

Freight causes issues with the current system, but it is not required to cause issues. It only causes issues because we have chosen to not invest in improving things.

FapFlop ,

There’s the comment I was scrolling for.

Semi-Hemi-Demigod ,
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

Road wear scales as a cube of vehicle weight, so unless the heavier trucks are only 4.6% heavier than two trucks they'll cause more damage to the roads while consuming less fuel and therefore producing less fuel tax revenue which is used to repair the roads.

Cleverdawny ,

Road wear scales as a cube of vehicle weight

Per axle.

consuming less fuel

This is a good thing

Semi-Hemi-Demigod ,
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

Yes, and unless that road weight per axle is only 4.6% higher it's going to cause more road wear than just using two trucks.

And consuming less fuel is good, provided we find a way to pay for the increased repairs we'll need.

radix ,
@radix@lemmy.world avatar

The federal diesel tax rate is 24.4 cents/gallon and hasn’t been changed since 1993 [not indexed to inflation], a time period that’s seen other inflation raise prices by some 65-75%.

JustAManOnAToilet ,

It’s tough on the roads, but less trucks (even if each one is producing slightly more CO2 than usual) would be a net decrease in CO2 overall. Drivers better be on point though, the extra momentum is nothing to play around with.

HobbitFoot ,

Hey, they got some truck drivers to drive for negative pay already. It turns out they can’t convince the rest.

bobman ,

Congress really aren’t the sharpest tools in the shed.

What do you mean? Their entire purpose is to funnel as much money as possible to the ruling class. This is the point.

reddig33 , in Local officials call on Congress to reject larger trucks on highway

I seem to recall a news story in the 80s (maybe 20/20?) about how dangerous double and triple trailer trucks were on the highway. I guess the industry thinks it’s been long enough to try pushing for this again.

exploding_whale ,

Pretty sure doubles are legal in most states and triples are legal in a number of states as well. I don’t see any length increase details in the article, though it does mention longer trucks. The only specific mentioned is higher gross weight.

9488fcea02a9 ,

What if we increased the number of trailers to 12 or something… But the trucks will be so dangerous that we should give them their own separated lane… And then we can build these massive trucks that can pull 100 trailers at once…

bobman ,

I guess the industry thinks it’s been long enough to try pushing for this again.

Yeah, it’s really sad how people are paid everyday to think of ways to cut corners and lower standards so rich people can make more money.

It never ends.

What an insane decision. Deciding you won’t host adult content on your platform is one thing. Saying “well you can’t talk about COVID here” is something else entirely.

NOT_RICK ,
@NOT_RICK@lemmy.world avatar

Sounds like they worried about misinfo popping up from search rather than, you know, actually moderating their platform.

Veraticus ,
@Veraticus@lib.lgbt avatar

That is probably exactly what it is. Disappointing regardless.

WHYAREWEALLCAPS ,

It’s a problem of scale. Places like Threads and X are too large to do any real moderation as we think of it. Hell, Reddit only barely manages it with unpaid volunteers and that is highly uneven in its results. The sheer volume and speed of posting on those platforms would make it an absolute nightmare to try to do.

bobman ,

This is why people need to be their own moderators.

Block people who say things you don’t want to see. It’s a pretty simple concept, but some children legitimately believe that if they don’t want to see something, then neither should anyone else.

robbotlove ,

this means jackshit if they still can’t afford to keep up with inflation and rising property taxes.

rayyyy ,

Seems the CEOs manage to get nice raises. The standard company plan is to get poorly paid people to be mad at those who managed to bargain for decent pay, and it works so well.

CmdrShepard ,

Shit all these car companies have jacked up the hell out of their prices over the last couple years too while these workers had to go into factories and work during the pandemic without seeing any sort of pay raise since 2019.

NatakuNox ,
@NatakuNox@lemmy.world avatar

“Best paid in their field” and paid their fair share for their labor are not the same thing. 16% which is a lie, isn’t enough for 40 years of being under paid.

Hazdaz ,

40 years of being under paid.

LOL

You might want to step out of this conversation if you think UAW members have ever been underpaid. Union workers for GM, Ford and Chrysler had been paid a good 30 to 50% (or more) more than autoworkers for Japanese and German carmakers operating plants in the US.

avidamoeba ,
@avidamoeba@lemmy.ca avatar

Sounds like they should join UAW if they don’t want the gap to keep growing to the point where they can’t afford to live where they work. Cost of living ain’t waiting for their bosses to spare some change they could give to their major shareholders instead.

Hazdaz ,

And yet they willingly vote against unionization. It’s almost as if they know something.

bluGill ,

I don't know what things are like in Japan, but in Germany everyone is in the union.

avidamoeba ,
@avidamoeba@lemmy.ca avatar

I think they were talking about Japanese and German autos operating in the US. Only they know what UAW and German union workers don’t, apparently.

GeneralVincent ,

What do they know? How about you let us all in on the secret of why unions are bad?

Every study and source I’ve seen says it results in higher pay and better working conditions, but maybe you have a reliable source saying otherwise?

NatakuNox ,
@NatakuNox@lemmy.world avatar

If the worker isn’t the number one benefactor I don’t care if they are paid above the average. That goes for all industries. The owners, executive, investors, and board members shouldn’t. Paying works well never bankrupt a company, but underpaying absolutely will.

SCB ,

No UAW member is underpaid. The UAW is among the most powerful unions in the world.

I’m all for this current fight but suggesting they are somehow underpaid is both laughable and demeaning to the UAW.

Endlessvoid ,

Really buying into the corporate propoganda here aren’t you? These used to be great paying jobs, but the average auto workers salary has eroded just like every other industry and is less than $40k these days, even if you arbitrarily exclude non-union auto workers it’s still barely $50k. Even those non-union workers will benefit from industry wages increasing with this new contract.

Also, this contract will be a 4 year agreement through 2027, and auto workers haven’t seen a raise since 2019. If you considered the 46% they’re asking for as an annual raise over that time period 2019-2027 it would only be a 5.75% annual raise.

And we haven’t even talked about the inflation since 2019 which has already eroded their pay by 20%, plus whatever additional inflation through the next 4 years will do. If inflation doesn’t cool down through that period this 46% may barely maintain their current wages.

Sabata11792 ,
@Sabata11792@kbin.social avatar

You don’t think Pelosi has done anything to advance the Democratic agenda? I don’t live in her district, so I’m not sure about locally, but I do think she’s been highly influential nationally, and I personally think she has done a good job.

That being said, her district is safe Democratic even if she doesn’t run. She should retire, enjoy the rest of her life with her family and leave feeling good about her accomplishments. It’s someone else’s job to carry on the work.

afraid_of_zombies ,

Would you perfer I pointed instead to it being about 1,825 days ago?

TurboDiesel , (edited )
@TurboDiesel@lemmy.world avatar

Why? A congressional term is 2 years. A Senate term is 6 years. Saying “it was x years/days/weeks ago” is totally unhelpful to the larger conversation. It’s reductive for no reason. And I think we both know you chose “hAlF a DeCaDe” for gravitas.

Now, if you had said something like “Pelosi hasn’t sponsored any major legislation since x”, sure. Let’s talk. Honestly, fact is she’s a fundraising dynamo. I fucking hate it, but that’s the framework we’re working in. She brings in money and is thus valuable to the DNC. In an ideal world she’d be replaced with a progressive who isn’t an octogenarian. But that’s clearly not where we are yet.

Agree to disagree. Her strategy for the house was fantastic, focusing on popular ideas like health care and avoiding dangerous losing topics like others in the party wanted. She’s great at being an election whip.

IHaveTwoCows ,

And what hapoened to campaign finance and lobbyist reform? I dont know anyone in either party who thinks we shouldn’t “get money out of politics!!

Gargantu8 ,

Whataboutism. How many campaigns have you volunteered for? Go do that instead of argue anonymously online.

IHaveTwoCows ,

That isn’t “whataboutism”, you potato. I am pointing out Pelosi’s blatant hypocrisy and need to suck off that sweet sweet lobbyist grift and insider trading wins.

I literally campaign for the most progressive people possible. Go do that instead of wasting your time doing this. I wouldn’t ever campaign for pelosi in a primary if it makes you feel better.

IHaveTwoCows ,

I have a blind person to take care of and do not have that freedom. Since she has lost her sight and cannot work, she will lose her insurance soon. Thankfully we have to deal with multiple for-profit third parties who couldn’t care less whether she lives or dies in trying to keep her under some sort of umbrella because none of the taxes she paid all her life went towards health care.

Gargantu8 ,

Deepest sympathies to you. That is so awful. I battled cancer/lymphoma during the pandemic and was able to get my incredibly expensive healthcare paid for in (nearly) full due to MinnesotaCare and I will do my part to get that for everyone in the US.
