verdantbanana , in Nancy Pelosi: Democrat and ex-Speaker, 83, to seek re-election
@verdantbanana@lemmy.world avatar

another canidate question what has your past politics done for me locally? even nationally? if the answer is unsure or maybe some tv propaganda answer that was fed to you then why do they deserve votes

GiddyGap ,

You don’t think Pelosi has done anything to advance the Democratic agenda? I don’t live in her district, so I’m not sure about locally, but I do think she’s been highly influential nationally, and I personally think she has done a good job.

That being said, her district is safe Democratic even if she doesn’t run. She should retire, enjoy the rest of her life with her family and leave feeling good about her accomplishments. It’s someone else’s job to carry on the work.

Gargantu8 ,

She’s the reason democrats won the 2018 midterms for starters.

afraid_of_zombies ,

That was half a decade ago.

TurboDiesel ,
@TurboDiesel@lemmy.world avatar

Nice disingenuous framing there. That’s 2 elections. Pelosi needs to go but saying shit like that doesn’t help anyone.

afraid_of_zombies ,

Would you perfer I pointed instead to it being about 1,825 days ago?

TurboDiesel , (edited )
@TurboDiesel@lemmy.world avatar

Why? A congressional term is 2 years. A Senate term is 6 years. Saying “it was x years/days/weeks ago” is totally unhelpful to the larger conversation. It’s reductive for no reason. And I think we both know you chose “hAlF a DeCaDe” for gravitas.

Now, if you had said something like “Pelosi hasn’t sponsored any major legislation since x”, sure. Let’s talk. Honestly, fact is she’s a fundraising dynamo. I fucking hate it, but that’s the framework we’re working in. She brings in money and is thus valuable to the DNC. In an ideal world she’d be replaced with a progressive who isn’t an octogenarian. But that’s clearly not where we are yet.

Gargantu8 ,

Correct.

Grant_M ,
@Grant_M@lemmy.ca avatar

Absolutely

ZenkorSoraz ,

She also helped pass loads of legislation in Obama and Biden’s first term.

IHaveTwoCows ,

No she isnt.

Gargantu8 ,

I don’t even like her but I’m willing to admit the fact lol

IHaveTwoCows ,

Except it isnt a fact. Trump led to those wins. That’s because some of us know a Nazi when we see one.

Gargantu8 ,

Agree to disagree. Her strategy for the house was fantastic, focusing on popular ideas like health care and avoiding dangerous losing topics like others in the party wanted. She’s great at being an election whip.

IHaveTwoCows ,

And what hapoened to campaign finance and lobbyist reform? I dont know anyone in either party who thinks we shouldn’t “get money out of politics!!

Gargantu8 ,

Whataboutism. How many campaigns have you volunteered for? Go do that instead of argue anonymously online.

IHaveTwoCows ,

That isn’t “whataboutism”, you potato. I am pointing out Pelosi’s blatant hypocrisy and need to suck off that sweet sweet lobbyist grift and insider trading wins.

The investing app tracking Pelosi trades - “every trade … inevitably … a winner” www.forexlive.com/news/!/…/amp/

Gargantu8 ,

I literally campaign for the most progressive people possible. Go do that instead of wasting your time doing this. I wouldn’t ever campaign for pelosi in a primary if it makes you feel better.

IHaveTwoCows ,

I have a blind person to take care of and do not have that freedom. Since she has lost her sight and cannot work, she will lose her insurance soon. Thankfully we have to deal with multiple for-profit third parties who couldn’t care less whether she lives or dies in trying to keep her under some sort of umbrella because none of the taxes she paid all her life went towards health care.

Gargantu8 ,

Deepest sympathies to you. That is so awful. I battled cancer/lymphoma during the pandemic and was able to get my incredibly expensive healthcare paid for in (nearly) full due to MinnesotaCare and I will do my part to get that for everyone in the US. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts and sharing your experience. If you ever need someone to talk to, please dm me.

IHaveTwoCows ,

Thank you. And I am haopy things worked out for you after that battle

Fades ,

Well we sure know she used her position to advance her wallet

But yeah go off, defend this geriatric corrupt traitor. She’s not fucking special she’s a literal enemy of the people due to said corruption

GiddyGap ,

Keeping it classy, I see.

30mag ,

I do think she’s been highly influential nationally

That’s correct. She opposed impeaching Bush 43.

xpinchx , in US approves updated COVID vaccines to rev up protection this fall

Get your vaccines and boosters or whatever, COVID sucks I’m just now getting over my 2nd bout. Not fun.

bibliotectress ,

I heard it was really going around again, so I got my booster a few weeks ago right before school started back up (I work in a high school library). I wanted to wait for the booster with the new strain, but figured I was better off just getting it. I hope I made the right decision. 🙏 I really don’t want to get covid again. My energy levels afterwards were crap for weeks.

MargotRobbie , in Activists spray red paint over billionaire Walmart heiress's superyacht for a second time

Here’s a personal finance tip: Don’t buy a yacht, or any boat, like, ever. If you really want one and have the money, just rent one, these thing costs a ridiculous amount of money to maintain for something that’s going to be used like once or twice a year at most.

ALostBoy , in Why the United Auto Workers union is poised to strike major US car makers this week

I heard in a podcast, one of NPRs I think, that if the union wants to deplete their strike fund they could give each member $500 every week and last for about 3 months. And that in just 10 work days there would be 5 billion dollars lost in the economy. So 345=60 billion dollars. Let’s see what happens and who blinks first.

dangblingus ,

345 what? If 10 days is 5 billion lost, then 120 days would be $60 billion lost.

TRBoom ,

I think he meant 345=60 billion dollars. 3 months times 4 weeks times 5 billion a week.

Edit, same thing happened to me. The asterisk is a markdown character for italics. You’ll notice that his 4 is italicized.

CmdrShepard ,

I thought he was just using fancy math.

ALostBoy ,

Yeah I didn’t proofread it. I meant to have an asterisk there.

negativenull , in PR Firm Has Been Paying Rotten Tomatoes Critics For Positive Reviews

It happened to the Better Business Bureau, Yelp, Google Reviews, Amazon Reviews. If you google random products + reviews, you’ll get limitless “review websites” with the product you are looking at, with lots of suspicious “affiliate” links.

All reviews on the internet are BS. In the past, Consumer Reports was seen as legitimate, it’s the only one who might be legit now.

Drusas ,

Not all reviews are BS--all review sites are BS. Plenty of real people post real reviews mixed in with the fake ones.

negativenull ,

That’s fair. The signal-to-noise ratio makes it hard to determine truth.

Potatos_are_not_friends ,

My old job bought reviews. We had apps with millions of downloads, and at least half of the reviews were purchased. We’ve had thousands of five star reviews to our brick and mortar stores, all paid for to boost our presence.

Whenever we launch a new thing, we’d have hundreds of reviews ready. Kinda like leaving a few dollars in a tip jar to get the energy going.

Welcome to modern day business practice.

Macaque ,

Temu is pretty blatant about buying reviews on play store as well as it’s own.

IamSparticles ,

The Better Business Bureau was always a protection racket. Businesses pay (a lot) for membership. If you aren’t a member you can’t respond to complaints and it impacts your business negatively. Members can respond to a complaint and no matter what the response is, or if the customer is satisfied, the complaint gets marked as resolved.

tallwookie , in Why are CEOs still so intent on taking worker attendance?

if workers arent in the office, then potentially billions of dollars in office real estate is no longer a good investment & will directly impact their revenue. any manager or e-level who is responsible for that kind of financial hit will be immediately fired and blacklisted… ergo, employees will return to the office effective immediately.

Silverseren , in US approves updated COVID vaccines to rev up protection this fall

Does the latter part mean it won't be available to the broader public until October, since they will be focused on the elderly and such first?

yeather ,

Yes, but let’s be real you don’t really need the COVID vaccine, it’s essentially a secondary flu shot.

Silverseren ,

My roommates both have health difficulties that would put them at high risk if they contracted Covid. So the least I can do is make sure I am vaccinated and masked to reduce the risk of me contracting it and infecting them.

Because I'm not a terrible person that only thinks about myself.

Nurgle ,

What? They’re clearly saying that Covid is as dangerous as the flu. They’re obviously wrong and also downplaying the importance of getting a flu shot, but they’re not talking about the genetic relationship of the two.

Kalkaline ,
@Kalkaline@programming.dev avatar

The willful ignorance is astounding with the COVID deniers. They have no idea how to evaluate scientific evidence.

Nurgle ,

Well it’s just that, it’s willful. It’s a lot easier to say it’s just another flu than to worry about the reality of the situation.

Sl00k ,

Isn’t the situation essentially equivalent to the flu at this point in time?

I’m choosing not to get any more boosters since my last one gave me severe side effects for 3 months, but would if absolutely necessary.

wwaxwork ,

Yes but you need flu shots so I’m not sure what point you are trying to make here.

HobbitFoot , in Local officials call on Congress to reject larger trucks on highway

So, a lot of states have been changing the design truck from the federal standard to something heavier based on the traffic they are seeing. So, if the federal government is going to accept the heavier trucks, they are going to have to accept the affect these trucks have on the nation’s highways.

Or just do what railroads did and design roads for the heaviest train of trucks full time forever, but that is kind of expensive and the federal government doesn’t want to spend the money if they don’t have to.

    HobbitFoot ,

Shh… just let Michigan send whatever across the border.

    geosoco OP ,

Not just highways. Most of these are still going to travel on some locally maintained roads for at least some distance to drop off their goods. They should weigh less than 2 trucks, but will also potentially pack more weight into less space than 2 trucks (depending on loads).

What will this mean for red light durations and the yellow change phase? It takes a lot to slow these babies down.

    HobbitFoot ,

There may need to be a re-evaluation of stopping distances, but as strong distances haven’t really been updated over time, I don’t see that being a major issue.

    SheeEttin ,

I don’t think it means anything different for traffic signals. The biggest trucks mostly stick to highways, even small state highways, that don’t have many signals. And where they do, they’re probably going up be going slow enough already that it’s not going to make a difference.
